The egg. New species come about because of spontaneous genetic mutation, which occurs in embryo. So the not-chicken laid an egg that should have been another not-chicken but ended up by freak chance being a chicken.

It's obviously the egg. What we think of as a chicken will only have evolved (relatively) recently. Eggs were around in the time of the dinosaurs, so i dont think theres much contest really.

I always interpreted the question as meaning: which came first, the chicken or the chicken egg?

Neither. First came the dinosaur, which was a precursor to the chicken. Before that were fish. And go back far enough, you hit single-celled organisms. Before that were self-replicating amino acids. Before that was self-replicating RNA-type material. Before that were chemicals. Before that were stars. Before that there was a bang. Before that was nothing. Or God, depending on your point of view.

I think it's the egg because chickens (like most birds) are believed to have evolved from reptiles. And to evolve, the mutations must occur in the new generation, which is born in the egg.
