Well, getting the surgery done is probably going to be better than not getting it done.

</helpful advice>

I AM NOT A DOCTOR and do not know what I'm talking about, but I'm guessing the surgery is to remove the infected bit, possibly from the bone which can be sort of porous and let infections spread. It might even be just to see and make sure that the bone is not infected or badly infected. If it gets to the other side of the bone, like inside the skull, then things get seriously ugly. Even then, I probably woulndt be life.threatening ... they seem to open skulls and spoon about in there at the slightest these days ... I wouldn't be surprised if he got one hell of a scar from this though ... I'm sure there are people here who know more about this sort of thing.

Listen to the doctor/surgeon. They are trained professionals, and they know more about the surgery and the situation than anyone here. Ask them questions. They should be happy to help you understand the situation.

That being said, I can tell you that the danger is that any infection on the front of your face that becomes infected, especially around the nose and the eyes, has the possibility of spreading to the brain. The superior opthalmic vein drains the eye socket, the facial vein drains other parts of the face. These veins communicate with the cavernous sinus and the pterygoid venous plexus in the brain (that is, these veins are attached to two large vein-like areas in the brain). These veins do not have valves, which means blood can flow backwards into them in some cases. This is a problem, since it means that infection can spread backwards into the brain, instead of downwards with the normal flow of blood.

If the surgery is performed right away, I imagine there shouldn't be too many complications, but as I say, I'm not fully aware of the situation.

Wishing your brother health.

honey, try and stay calm. doctors are trained for this kind of thing, they'll sort him out. don't start fearing the worst just yet *massive hugs*

i think tigersong covered most of the important points, so i'll just agree. as long as it's dealt with soon, it shouldn't cause any more problems than a bit of physical injury.

btw, i'm not a doctor either.

is there a doctor in the house?? huh.gif

/lame attempt at making you half-arsededly smile

i'm here if you ever wanna talk narth m'dear *more hugs*
