Right I want to know a good place to set up an email account I've got a Hotmail account to which anything and everything goes to and I had a freeserve account on my own computer to which I had somewhere more serious stuff to like business and banking info. But now as I'm back at the parents my computers not attached to the internet and I can't get into that account any more and freeserve now been taken over or whatever so I'm not even sure the accounts still there.
So anyway I want a good place to set up a new and reliable internet based account to get my business stuff sent to.

Have Google launched their e-mail yet? I read in the papers that it was going to be a really good service, bigger and more reliable than hotmail accounts and nice and free as well.

EDIT: Just checked, and no, its not been released yet. Its still in the works, but shouldn't be very long. For updates, check out Gmail , where you can submit your current email addy to be updated by google. Nyah, see, Tara can be organised on occasion...

Gmail is a nice idea, but hideous as far as personal privacy goes. I think it's something along the lines that Google search all the text of your messages and use it to target adverts at you and for search engine purposes. Essentially they have the right to read everything that you write or recieve. Can anyone clarify further? I've not got the time to go and research at the mo'.

So does Microsoft. That's Hotmail and anything you say over MSN. They can not only read it, they actually have the rights to anything sent over either service, including things like business proposals. It's one of the most frightening ToSs I've ever read.

I use a mix of hotmail (non-essential stuff), my student email account my uni gave me (for uni stuff) and my self hosted one, steve (at) moop.org.uk (for anything important).

EDIT: I've broken apart your email address. These forums are regularly scanned by search engines and I don't want you getting loads of junkmail - Mata

While Google are going to give you obscene amounts of free storage you will not be able to delete anyhing. The security aspect of the service is horrendous beyond belief.

Try signing up for a couple of Yahoo accounts. They give you 6 megs a go, have reasonably good spam filtering, and you use one for fillinf in forms, and one to give to real people. That's the system I use, and I get less than one spam a week even after over a year.

My hotmail address remained spam free for a long time, several years, then recently it suddenly got onto a list somewhere and I've been fighting torrents of spam ever since. Today I had 236 messages with a 20k virus attachment sent to me. sad.gif

I've been really satisfied with FastMail. I have no less than 4 accounts there. You can select from a list of domain names. For spamming issues, they also have the nifty "Bounce" feature, where you can just bounce the message back to the sender as if you're no longer reachable at that account. If that made sense. Plus it's 10 megs of space, which is good for me since I do so much sending and receiving (and saving) of emails. Hotmail is for weenies! wink.gif

*Holds up a completely spam free Hotmail account*

I have a Yahoo one too but that has about 200 spam mails per day...

Ohh - that's just happened to my work account. I'm getting about 70 spam mails a day and majority of them are...um...distasteful. sad.gif

Any ideas how I can stop it?

Short of changing your address there isn't really anyhing you can do to stop them. What you can do is make sure you set your email client not to automatically show images (that can actually be used to tell whether spam has reached an active address.) Assuming your firm has a proper geek in charge of IT rather than some bloke they sent off for an afternoon to be shown what a network cable is, you can ask to be taken through setting up filters in your email client.

Yup, it's free. There are paying options too, but all the accounts I have there are free, and it works just great for me.

Yahoo just updated their service - 100MB of storage, 10 MB allowed on attachments, Spam filter, still completely free. There are ads all over the place, but they're not really in the way at all, no pop-ups or anything.

I use a Polish e-mail service at www.wp.pl. It's not necessarily any better than any other service, and it takes a while to register, unless you speak Polish.
