For those of you who know, I used to live in Greece. The two following pictures are of my old local town square (on the island of Kefalonia) just after Greece won Euro 2004...

...pretty crap quality, but you get the jist.

YAY GREECE!!!

Well, I've got to have some national pride. If those losers in the England team can't kick a ball in a straight line (Beckham, what a complete WASTE of time and money)
then Greece is the next best thing for me!!!

Basically after England was knocked out I was "whatever" about Euro 2004. I didn't watch any more games. I didn't really want to watch the England ones either but Ed is football crazy. I just get crazy. Really wound up. It's footie rage laugh.gif

I'm glad the Greeks won as I wanted to laugh at the Portugese. Yes I'm mean and nasty I know! laugh.gif Seriously though it was nice for the Greeks to win in the year they are hosting the Olympics. Let's hope they don't leave it too long to carry on the building. They're behind enough as it is ohmy.gif

Yay Greece! My uncle will be insufferable...oh well - we're all going to Crete in a few weeks anyways, I'm sure he'll make up for not being home during the football then tongue.gif

HEY! There is nothing wrong with American football. It's just got a few more pads, that's all. It's not boring by any stretch of the imagination (unless you don't know the rules, in which case you'll probably be lost). Plus, it's a totally different game. 95% of Americans thing soccer is the most faggoty, boring sport there is. I mean, lacrosse beats it in popularity.

Oh, trust me Pixie, I appreciate rugby way more than football, but it will never really catch on in the states. It's an accepted belief in America that anything European is pu**y ('cept the beer, Americans can't get enough beer) so we never caught on with rugby... sadly. We can still see it on ESPN 8 or whatever once a month laugh.gif

Beside, we could never get rid of the pads. Too many young'ins play football, and soccer moms would have a fit. I'm personally not against my 10 year old playing rugby, so long as he's playing against other 10 year olds. What's the worse that can happen? But America is twisted that way.

DE-FENSE DE-FENSE DE-FENSE

I watched all of the footie and Greece totally deserved to win, I even had a tear in my eye at the end when they got their medals and stuff cos they were just so thrilled to have won!!

They played brilliantly, and they played fairly and gentlemanly (is that a real word? blink.gif ), and their supporters were great too.

Well done Greece!! biggrin.gif

Beside some like, designer clothing labels and... some foods, we really don't accept the culture cery well. Or at least in my experience. Maybe you've come across more tolerant people?

Everytime I go to America I get accosted by Americans asking me to speak in "my lovely accent" and telling me luuuuuurve everything about England. "It's so quaint" springs to mind laugh.gif Not sure where you're from but I think I might stay away! laugh.gif

How can anyone think Rugby is pu**y? ohmy.gif Especially a nation who plays essentially the same sport but puts pads on! laugh.gif Have you seen the size of those guys and what they do to each other on the pitch??? blink.gif

I must know a special breed of hicks or something, because no one I know appreciates anything from Europe. I guess I've been watching through the rosey glasses of my own experience. Not necessarily the places (they love the countries!) but they don't think that adopting any European customs would be... American? I don't actually know what and why they think what they do, I guess they don't realize that the culture that is America today is derived from a couple centuries of European immigrants coming over and making do.

Anyway, damned if I know why rugby never caught on. Apparently, since everywhere else people seem to think that Europe is good and great, we should be tearing off the pads right now. I would not be opposed to rugby (though I don't know what you guys do as far as things like Super Bowls, but if you don't, we'd definately add one because it's one of the biggest thing Coke, Pepsi, and beer have going for them all year long). But not anytime soon, Ravens just got a new black-ish uniform, and Ray Lewis looks too cool for school in it wub.gif

I would agree that they aren't boring to watch but I wouldn't say they have the most pride in their team and supporters than anyone else. It's all subjective surely smile.gif

they where all defensive and only counter attacked

i.e. boring

but maybe its just me

i prefer football to be exxting i want them to dazzle the field with skill and fly at the other teams defence in blind arrogance knowing that glory could be theirs.

but i'm just a footballer whose career was ended by injury, and who still feels passion for the game

As a person who is one quarter Greek, I was one quarter ecstatic after the result. My mum, being a whole extra quarter happier, wouldn't stop screaming down the phone at me.

We're not a football family, but jeez, that result came out of nowhere. They chuffing deserved it.

One downer was that one of my co-workers won the work sweepstake with my bloody country. I'm only bitter because I drew Latvia...
