Just had my first driving lesson...And I didn't stall it biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Just wanted to re cap. someone yell at me if I have this wrong.

Get in the car
Put on seat belt, checking its not twisted.
Adjust mirror so you can see whole of back window
check both side mirrors so you can just about see the ass of the car
Check gears are in neutral.
Turn on engine
EDIT - MOVE TO 1st GEAR DUMMY!
Apply clutch and look for bite point. The car will raise at the rear slightly when in the right position.
Check your mirrors to see what's behind you.
Step up the gas
release clutch when moving
Swear at other drivers on the road as they mock my staggering speed of 20mph

I drove a car tonight dammit! A great big bast*rd of one too!!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

You'll want to move into First before looking for the bite, or else you won't be able to shift the gearshift about. Otherwise, release the clutch smoothly, and everything's spit-spot.

Check that the flux capacitor is charged otherwise you'll never make the jump when you reach 88 miles per hour. You might want to make sure that your flight path is clear too.

I'll make a great driver someday biggrin.gif

You may also want to release the handbrake at some point too. Unless you like pretty clouds of blue smoke. wink.gif

Oh yeah..and don't forget, if you're taking your test, you have to ask the driver to buckle up, because more than likely they won't, just to see if you're not only a safe driver but care about your passengers. Plus, you get a ticket if they don't have their seatbelt on....atleast in Florida.

eep!

I had to do a parallel park in my test...was EVIL! I can't parallel park my mini!!

You'll do fine. So long as you get on with your instructor, if you don't then you won't enjoy it and you won't learn so well.

I don't plan ever to learn to drive. Never mind that the idea of me in control of a ton or so of metal and plastic is deeply frightening, I just don't like cars. They're big and loud and they smell and they kill people.

But good luck with your test smile.gif

For the benefit of the colonial types: In the UK if you don't do your test with a car with manual transmission you don't get a full licence. Our examiners don't check that we look for their seatbelt because it's been the law here for so long. Our examiners look where we point our eyes.

A while back our laws changed, and I'm allowed to drive vehicles 3.5 tonnes heavier than teh n00bs.

Well yeah that's pretty much it apart from the edits mentioned by others.

So that's how your SUPPOSED to drive.

How Sam Drives

* Get in car
* Start car
* Put load rock music on stereo to drown out dodgy exhaust (on older models only)
* Pull away, narrowly missing pedestrians
* Swear at pedestrians
* Remove handbrake after noticing clouds of smoke
* Zoom down road swearing at everything and everyone
* Stop and park (badly)
* Apply handbrake
* Leave car
* Swear some more for good measure!

Seriously, I'm not that bad. I've been driving for over 10 years, never had any convictions and only 1 accident. Which I still maintain was not totally my fault dry.gif

Oh yeah and use your left wing mirror! I didn't and failed my first test as I almost hit a truck ohmy.gif Stupid truck shouldn't have been there, mutter, mutter....

*wanders off swearing about other road users*

Why not put the money towards motorbike lessons rather than learning to drive and wasting your money? You don't need a car licence to drive a motorbike in this country.....do you? unsure.gif

I was talking to my friend last night and he was hit by a bike the other day. The idiot basically wasn't paying attention. My friend slowed down in a line of traffic, looked up and saw a rather surprised biker run into the back of his car! He wasn't badly injured so my friend stayed with him for 2 hours while his family came to get him (2 hours!). He never said thanks and he muck around the insurance company so much someone had to go round and get his insurance details as he refused to play ball! dry.gif

My friend is now really wary of motorcyclists sad.gif

No, but mums paying for the driving lessons, so I guess thats one more thing I'll be able to do... And incidentlly, I've known one helluva lot of bikers, and the majority of them (Including the "Hell's Angel" wannabes rolleyes.gif) are usually pretty a) decent and cool.gif careful. As in all walks of life, theres always a handful of people who ruin it for everyone else.

For example, my b/f was hit by a Land Rover on his bike (through no fault of his own - it pulled out of a side road/drive without looking). He had to go to hospital with a damaged knee. The driver didnt bother to stop and see if he was OK (although fortunately her son did) so you may as well say car drivers are bad.

I didn't say that all bikers are bad. I'm sorry if you read it that way but that's not what I meant. I don't know anyone who rides a bike but I know people who want to and people that have done and they are all really nice smile.gif

My friend, which perhaps I should have mentioned before to avoid confusion, added that his mate (who rides a bike) said that this guy was a twat and that you should always pay attention when riding a bike. Obviously my mate's mate is nice otherwise they wouldn't be friends smile.gif

Well done, Jenny. And now you only have forty more lessons to go before you're a half-decent driver.
