Oh wow.. I almost forgot taste.. Mmm how could I forget taste. Oh yeah.. but uhh.. I dunno, I ask these random questions..randomly. And this is one of those random moments. Personally, I could deal without the sense of smell. As long as it didn't mess up with the way food tastes. But god forbid there's a fire downstairs. ohmy.gif There's no way I could live without the others. I use them too much. And we've all kinda experienced the lack of smelling when we have a bad cold. It wasn't that bad.

I voted smell. I wouldn't want to lose my hearing, as i wouldn't be able to listen to music, and also not hearing people would make me feel alone, as there is always the sound of someone around. Touch would just be a severe hinderance if you lost it, plus there are so many nice feels around. Nothing would seem real if you couldn't touch it. Sight would fuel imagination, but I like looking at art and reading, and all that would be lost without sight (yes, i know there is such a thing as Braille). The only two things i would like to lose least are smell and taste. But stuff tastes nice, so i'll keep that.

I voted for feel because...well a lot of different things:

1. As long as you're looking where you're going you're good--so you're not going to burn or stab yourself(in theory)
2. Some things don't feel plesent.
3. If you can't feel that also means you can't feel pain which can be a good thing--but still you'd have to watch yourself

...so yes...thoes are my reasons...and well I thought too much ph34r.gif

whoa... I could not live without my sense of touch.. that'd make me feel more alone than anything... then again, it might be because I'm a touchy person. And there are some things that feel good. If you lost your sense of touch, but could still move.. it'd just.. "feel" odd.. like you're floating forever. And you wouldn't know when to use the bathroom.. because you wouldn't feel the need to go.

They have opperations for that...tongue.gif

But seriously...feeling like your floating...maybe, severe frostbite all over your body...more likely...

It would have been that or my sense of taste...you don't really NEED to be able to taste anything, as long as you're able to get the nutrients from it and live...and if you wre born without taste, I mean...you wouldn't be able to miss it not knowing what you didn't have....'cause:

Random Tasteless Person: What does it taste like?
Me: Like Tyme, sage, and a hint of rosemary
Random Tasteless Person: *head explodes whilst trying to comprehend that the hell they're talking about*

But the same can be said for any other sense. You cannot explain how something feels/looks etc without comparing it to something else that the person recognises. It's like telling a blind person that something is red, when they don't know what red looks like, or saying something is high pitched to a deaf person who has never heard anything before.

I'll bet nearly everyone says smell. Or at least, not sight or hearing. Because there's that conflict between reading/writing/video games/tv and listening to our favorite music. And you have to go through a lot of crap just to make a living as a deaf or blind person. Braille just does not cut it.

My sense of smell is messed up anyway. I failed science tests because something is supposed to smell a certain way but my nose didn't work right.

Very true....

But...taste is something that cannot be discribed...In theory, a deaf person could know that something was high pitched if they were feeling the vibrations.

Smell.

As for feel, there are people born who can't feel pain. As such, these people have to be extremely careful - they may not know when a wound is major or not. Also when they're first born I believe they have a high rate for death within their infancy/childhood.

And feel - that would leave everything numb. Nuh uh. Not for me. I neeeed feeeeel. tongue.gif

Bleh, taste. I dont eat much anyway, and then I wouldnt have to sit on the couch with a family sized bag of chips not being able to controll the urge for tasting it again.

There's a joke about this one.

If I lost sight I wouldn't be able to see porn.
If I lost hearing I wouldn't be able to hear orgasms.
If I lost taste I wouldn't be able to taste PARTS.
If I lost touch I wouldn't be able to feel PARTS.

So It's smell. I can't really use it with this hay-fever anyway.

I voted smell (so long as it doesnt affect my sense of taste) ages ago but got side-tracked before I could post...

Sight: Well... Lets face it... the human race pretty much relies on sight for about 60% or so of their interactions with the world. Also, I like to read. And I am the only member of my family who has 20/20 vision and no glasses so it seems mean to make myself blind.

Hearing: I'm a musician. 'Nuff said.

Taste: Life without taste would just be weird... I pity the poor people with anosmia. Also, kissing, licking and that whole area of sex would suck (no pun intended). I like the way dan tastes, wouldnt trade it for the world.

Touch: A lot of human interactions are based on touch. Granted, I would be less uncomfortable when my sister does her "no concept of personal space" thing, but I would hate not to be able to hug someone or be hugged or whatever.

Smell: I do like the smell of a lot of things (for example... my bed, dan, baking,), but it is also one of the reasons I get so many bad headaches.

So... I would miss the sense of smell a lot. But I have the least reason for keeping it so...

Wow. A lot of people picked smell. What I don't think that you realize is that taste is a combination between your sense of flavor (yes there is such a thing I did a research paper on it) and smell.

If you loose your smell it is directly connected to taste and therefore you loose your sense of taste as well.

I could explain it further but it's late and I'm tired.

So yeah, I picked taste because it would least affect my other senses. If I could pick smell and have it be just smell that would be my choice. But, sense that's a two-for-one deal I'd rather just loose taste.

I can't pick.

I love being able to see the sky, it's so pretty, I couldn't do without sight.

I love music, just listening to peoples heartbeats, I need my hearing.

I like smelling stuff, grass, people, places...even bad smells have a certain something to me. So not smell.

I need hugs, if I couldn't feel people hugging me I'd die...I need to be able to feel.

Taste, I could maybe live without, I hate food...it makes me feel like my mouth is all icky and I don't like it...I'd be happy not to have to put up with spicy food. At least you could still feel when you kiss/lick people which is the important part...maybe taste I could live without but there is the risk that you would just stop eating :?

I don't think you'd stop eating.. I think it would be kinda boring to eat though more like a chore, if you didn't have your sense of taste. But you would start to eat much healthier I'm sure. Since you couldn't taste it.. there'd be no sense in eating sweets and what not ya know?

Losing sight would really suck, for obvious reasons. Braille really is no substitute and there's so much you have no chance at without eyesight

I couldn't play or listen to music without my hearing, and that's a big part of my life, so losing that is a big no.

Losing feel would be completely bizarre. Nothing would seem very real without it, and again, I'd be a pretty lame guitarist if I couldn't feel which string I was touching. Kind of makes recreational sex completely pointless too (from a purely selfish perspective).

I couldn't tollerate losing the ability to taste. I love good food and good drink. Without functioning taste buds you'd only be able to sense the texture of food (and that's debatable). Snoo tastes so nice as well...

That leaves smell. I wouldn't miss that much compared to the other senses, apart from the effect it would have on my taste, but I don't think taste is completely reliant on smell. Meh. I can live without it. Of course there are some smells I like, but losing them I could put up with.

You will notice that the majority of us did put in "provided this did not alter my sense of taste" tongue.gif

Also, it wouldnt mean you lost your sense of taste, it would just change it. And correct me if im wrong, here but I think taste affects smell too.

I think sight would be the most devasting for me to lose, because I'm an artist, and without sight I'd feel completely useless. The scary thing is, I'm only in my late teens and I'm already halfway blind (legally) and wear bifocals. Ack. I voted taste, although smell would be second. (My nose is so crooked and my sinuses so bad I don't smell much anyway.) I'm pretty much a passive eater; I eat to survive, not because I particularly enjoy it. Losing taste would only effect a small portion of your day, whereas the loss of hearing or sight or touch, and even smell, would be with you all day.
