When your programmer friends play about with the code and change all the creatures to rampaging 'Barney the Purple dinosaur'.

DooM - the first game that scared me.

Ah... back in the day when graphics were, comparatively, appalling - yet a pixellated monster accompanied by a low quality sound could still chill you.

DooM just worked well, for the first time, at surprising you. And that's what made it scary. Particularly when gliding down dimly lit corridors and hearing the call of an imp when it spotted you.

Playing DooM and DooM II again now, the feelings aren't the same because I've been spoilt by higher levels of realism in games. But it's still good stuff smile.gif

I voted for the monsters by the way smile.gif

DOOM III, by what I hear, had PERFECT graphics, yet the gameplay suffered.

The scariest thing is clearly the way that the framerate slows to a crawl as soon as the computer starts calculating enemy AI. Ooo, the screen is juddering, I guess I'm about to be attacked then... It's not as if the AI is even complex either 'see character, run at character, shoot character', how is that a drain on resources?

You may have guessed that I'm not that impressed with it...

What did you have, Mata, 2 megs of RAM? I never had any problems with it...

My friend has an old Commadore! He even has that cheesy "what-goes-where" instructional hook-up map thing. Worth a lot now, im guessing.

I've actually got 1.5GB of RAM in my machine and it still chugs a fair bit on Doom 3. I should probably fiddle with the settings yet more, but I really am having trouble getting the mental energy to up to do it!

Not yet worth as much as he probably paid for it originally. Retro gaming and 'stuff' is starting to become more collectable. But there's still a bunch of machines lying around here and there. It'll take a couple of decades before things start to take value.

...otherwise you'd find my Commodore64 and Commodore16+4 on ebay right now smile.gif With the trillion and one games I had for them, too.

Ahhh... we thought you spoke about the original Doom re: framerate. I'm curious about Doom 3, and would like to have a little play on it, but I'm not curious enough to buy it. It just doesn't appeal to me now like the first two did. Ho hum.

Hmm, Doom 3 runs pretty okay on my Athon XP 1900+ With 512meg ram (but drops to about 15fps at times). It's meant to be pretty scalable but only if you turn most of the features down. I would guess graphics card is the main bottleneck because of the excessive use of shaders (very small assembly language programs that run for every pixel in a polygon instead of just using plain texture mapping).

Retro computers are definitely getting collectable but dirt cheap at the moment on eBay and suchlike. I currently have 3 ZX Spectrums lying around somewhere at home, worth about a tenner on their own but up to about 75 quid with a well preserved box (!) - thats still nowhere near what they cost new.

Doom 3? Sure, it's dark and spooky lookin' but after playing for a few hours its pretty obvious that just like the last time the door will slam shut when you walk through, the lights will go out and something nasty will appear and you will shoot it (probably preceded by a scary roary/snarly monster noise).
