I was watching an awards show last night and they gave an award for best comedy movie of 2004 to Shrek 2. This was over Shaun of the Dead. Personally I thought Shrek 2 was good, but not as good as the first one, whereas Shaun of the Dead is absolutely fantastic, and in my opinion the best thing to come out of British cinema for a very very long time.

I think Shaun of the Dead is definitely among the best films of 2004. Also Hero was stunning and had a great story too, and Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind demonstrated that it is still possible in Hollywood to make a good movie when it really wants to. I also really enjoyed Chronicles of Riddick because it's an epic sci-fi action film that's had a lot of care and attention put into it, and I think the ending is great (which is surprisingly rare).

So those are my top choices for the year, what were yours?

While we're at it, what are you looking for to next year? House of the Flying Daggers looks promising, and I've never seen Jennifer Gardner be bad at anything so I think that Elektra is likely to be lots of fun.

I hardly ever get round to going to the cinema so I didn't watch many films this year, but Eternal sunshine has become one of my favourite films ever, a very refreshing take on relationships and of course the perfect pairing of Charlie Kaufman and Michel Gondry makes for some gloriously trippy set pieces. The score is beautiful from start to finish, all the actors are on top form (especially Carrey), and it's generally near perfect in all areas.

Really wanted to watch Oldboy but it didn't get shown for long and I missed it. I also wanted to watch Chronicles of Riddick but noone wanted to go with me because they thought it looked awful. How can a scifi film starring an action hero who roles twenties in his spair time be bad?
The Incredibles was the most fun film I've seen in ages, Pixar never disappoint but this had me laughing all the way through. I really want one of the frisby things that the bad guys fly on, they remind me of the hovery things in Akira, only cooler because they're fisbies.

I vote Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind. Just...very interesting...
it's difficult to find a film that is supposed to be intellectual that isn't pretencious...
('Adaptation' was awfully dissapointing)
I <3 Huckabees was pretty well done, but i really liked ESOTSP. woot.

Do I get hurt for Spiderman 2?

I know, I know: But I thought it was fabulous.

And I've not seen a lot of films this year...

I think I missed all the good films. Renting spree!

Yes. Even if it's just for when Mary Jane says "Go get 'em Tiger."

That ruined the whole movie with its cheesiness.

I'm going for Eternal Sunshine. Really really enjoyed that.

I have to say that I'm not suprised that Shaun of the Dead didn't win. It's niche. It's a 90 minute episode of Spaced, which as far as I'm concerned, is brilliant, but not to everyone's taste. Shrek 2 is (in a totally different way) just as smart and funny, with the added bonus of being accessible and enjoyable by all ages.

I didn't see many films this year, notably absent were Eternal Sunshine... and Hero. While I doubt the former would have been to my taste, I certainly would have enjoyed the latter, and shall rent it out.

Nobody has mentioned Kill Bill Vol. 2 yet, it was only half a film but to my mind it still deserves a mention here.

To be honest I didn't think a great deal of Shaun of the Dead (I'm a big Spaced fan); it didn't seem like it could decide whether it was trying to be funny or trying to be emotional, and ending up being annoying. The emotional scenes were jarring and out-of-place next to the (admittedly hilarious) comic scenes, which meant they didn't work at all, for me.

Hero gets the award from me. Probably the most beautiful film I've ever seen. Oh, so very beautiful.

Neither did I. And yeah, I liked SM2 as well ;x

But Eternal Sunshine was really good, although since I watched it in a plane it was sort of confusing. Hero was well was good; hey, it came from my country wink.gif

Actually, House of Flying Daggers is out this year - tomorrow or the day after, in fact.

I haven't seen as many movies this year, but I personally believe Kill Bill (as a whole) definitely gets a nomination. As does Hero. My good GOD did Hero rock my fragile little world. The fight scenes were beautifully done and the dialogue (in original Mandarin anyway) was well written and acted. The pacing and art and music and *joygasms* Best Foreign Film. Best Action/Drama. Best everything. Just give it to it already.

I haven't seen Eternal.. yet but I really want to.

Another movie I would really like to mention is The Village. Say what you will, but that movie drew me in in such a way...it was absolutely incredible. This terrific feeling of claustrophobia, the excellent acting and setup...the movie was unbelieavable. Even though I had figured things out plot-wise early on, I was still shocked and enthralled by the revelations brought about by the ending scenes. Beautiful.

I'm having troubles picking just ONE favourite.....everything that I've seen, I've liked a lot. Tough call.

And I agree with Mata. Shrek 2 was pretty good, but the first one was better. And Shaun of the Dead.....priceless. Watch that and the American remake of Dawn of the Dead and tell me which one was better. 'Nuff said. happy.gif

That was a very nice movie. biggrin.gif I saw it in China. ^^

Saw Spanglish the other day... it was good. Intensely emotional, funny at times without being immature and ultimately satisfying. Good acting, though the script made the conversation a little too poetic at a couple of points, but the actors made it work. Anyway, I have a horrible memory with movie dates, so for all I know I could have seen a few that were really good but don't remember when. As is, Spanglish. It's good.

Anyway, has anyone seen the movie version of The Phantom of the Opera? I love the play, but I don't like the voice of Christine very much. Anyone have any thoughts?

I saw Eternal Sunshine... this weekend and just have to say: Oh my God. An absolutely glorious film.

I just saw Shaun of the Dead and enjoyed it immesely riiight up until the mum-pub scene. And then I liked the end-bit, in the shed. But really, I'd have to agree with Commie about how the emotional and comic scenes didn't really gel. Jel?

I thought Anchorman was mildly funny, but I would have appreciated it much more if it were scenes on SNL rather than a movie.

Finding Neverland was good in a Johnny-Depp sort of way. I thought the little boy who played Peter was brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. The writing was a bit much, though--I got the feeling that the writers were SPANGing me on the head with a blunt object saying "Cry!! CRY NOW!" As a form of rebellion, I stood and glared at the screen for a few moments while my fellow movie-goers sniffled into tissues.

I've been lusting after a Garden State viewing but it's been sold out at the rental place near me. There's a waiting list. *argh*. The soundtrack is amazing, and I'd like to get to actually see the movie before I memorize all the words to each song.

Napoleon Dynamite was one of those movies. It will be immortalized forever by people saying "Gosh!" I loved the opening credits, with the plates of food. I loved some of the jokes. I wondered at one point how the actors managed to keep their faces in that uncomfortable position for entire scenes. I shook my fist at people wearing "Pedro for President" t-shirts.

I despised The Incredibles if only because my mother called me "Violet" for about 2 months straight whenever I wore my hair in my eyes (often). Also, I was distracted by Holly Hunter's bizarre way of speaking.

Overall, the film had a few good points about PCness, but was entirely unappealing to me.

And that would bring best movie to the first half of Shaun of the Dead. I will forever be imitating zombies because of it.
