.png files don't always display correctly in everyone's browsers, and often they can create huge files.

The .jpg format is designed for photographic images (JPEG comes from Joint Photographic Exhibition Group) and with a carefully considered compression rate it can be an extremely effective and useful system. the trouble is that it can be a very lossy system, meaning that an image losses fidelity very quickly if, for example, an image is compressed more than a couple of times.

.gif files also have their uses. They can be animated, which is handy, but their colour based system of compression means that they are useless for creating small photographic image files.
