McDonald's - I Am Asian

A choice quote from the above site:

QUOTE
We're Asian and Pacific Islander Americans and our diverse cultures and our everyday American lifestyle are becoming one. We're hanging on to our great traditions while we move to the beat of the times. We honor our heritage and we love being Americans. From high fashion to high tech, from Asian Pacific American hip hop to haute cuisine, we're weaving the threads of our culture into the fabric of everyday American life. Whether we're celebrating one of our cultural holidays or enjoying a Big Mac sandwich, we're helping make the magic mix called America become even richer. And McDonald's is right there with us, everyday! We are proud of our cultural heritage.

This site puts the f into WTF?

I can't even comment on this. It's so stupid, it defies rational explanation.
CheeseMoose
That is the most offensive thing I have seen for a long time. It is just a stupid, ignorant and racist and just plays on stereotypes and is offensive to people's intelligence.

Nooo! The music! Make it stop! Make it stop!

"Hi, I'm Asian, and am paradoxically managing to hang on to my wonderful culture, whilst at the same time enbracing the fatted Capitalist cow that is McDonalds. Isn't America great? Isn't fast food great? *laughs* But of course, you haven't got a choice, we tell you it is, so it is."

The Mr. Snaffleburger animations are becoming scarily relavent now....

You have to kind of admire McDonald's. They're making a connection between Asian culture and McDonald's, brazenly ignoring the evident fact that no such connection exists.

Are you sure this site is actually for real? I mean, parts of it seem like a piss-take to be honest. Considering it has "LOLROF" and ":DDDDDD" on the background and suchlike. Although that would probably mean that they want MaccyDs suing them. Maybe not...

Part of me wants to agree with you, but then the other part of me is saying "Remember Mr Snaffleburger..."

I'm relatively sure that it's kosher (LOL PUN), it's © McDonald's Corporation, so if it's not real it's in definite breach of law...

When my French teacher asked my class for examples of traditional American foods, this is what she got:

"hot dog!"
"hamburger"
"cheeseburger"
"french fries"

The only food mentioned there not sold at McDonald's at some point or another was "peanut butter and jelly sandwiches", which are not known for their nutritional value either.

Truly, that is frightening.
gothictheysay
At least they didn't say Freedom Fries.

Is that actually what French Fries were re-named to in some places, or just an urban-myth?

They were renamed that in the Congress cafeteria, until everybody laughed too hard. Some places copied this - my friend Laura's school in Cincinnati called them "Mercy Fries" (it's a Catholic school). So yeah, it did happen, but it wasn't a very widespread phenomenon.

There's precedent; in World War One (or possibly Two, or both), sauerkraut was renamed liberty cabbage, and dachschunds liberty pups.

...

I've tried to write this post so many times, just can't understand how ignorant McD are. I bet they're only targetting asians as most of Asia rejects western ideals, what better way to convert them by proving just how bad the western eating habits are?

Hmm this post still doesn't feel right. I just feel unclean.

What actually is American cuisine? And is any of it healthy?

In the UK most of our traditional foods aren't too great for us either, being honest. Roast dinners, fish and chips, curries so hot that Indians think we're stupid...
elphaba2
I'm not sure: I do know that in Epcot, the "America" resteraunt serves the foods I listed above, but they've got names like "Samuel Adams Root Beer" and "Paul Revere Fries"

It's really disgusting.

I'd consider simple, plain, 1950's style meals to be "American" like mashed potatoes, chicken, and some form of green vegetable. Fried chicken for the South, soybean-derived things for California, sand for the desert spots.

Our cusine isn't really to be envied.
I_am_the_best
And then comes in Ronald McDonald and all the kids run away yelling 'MUMMY MUMMY!'.

*runs away yelling 'MUMMY MUMMY!'*

That truly is awful. I mean, what's with it? Do they seriously think that they are going to get customers? I mean, if Asian people were looking at English/American websites, then surely they can speak English and it's not as if they're going to want to come to McDonalds.
CommieBastard
I like American food - there's very little edible on this Earth created by the hands of mortal man that can beat a really good burger. That's one of the reasons I hate McDonald's; it promotes the association in the rest of the world of "American food" with "bland, greasy shite".
little_bear
I have no-objection to burgers. A proper burger can be delicious, but what I object to is have to eat a freeze dried rank peice of flab that is over 40% water.
monkey_called_narth
dont forget the 30% soy....

actually... i like mcdonalds... atleast ill admit it.

once a week i roll threw the drive threw where my best freind works to pick up a couple of free double cheesburgers and some fries...

Why shouldn't McDonalds make ads pandering to the asian community? After all, they've been courting the African American population here in the states, for sometime, and now, they've started in on the Hispanic community, with ads for the McRib featuring a Hispanic drycleaner... Micky Dees apparently has NO sense of shame...

Well, its just all a bit cringeworthy for me. If it was more subtle I wouldn't mind, but not as blatant as this. I mean, I guess the sterotyping they're using kinda makes me uneasy.

I'mnot sure how they managed it, but they made that blurb on the first page sound condescending, racist and very carefully PC all at the same time.

I love this phrase "McDonalds Celebrates Moon Festival" Which means : "well it isn't actually called moon festival in any part of the asian community but we have to dumb everything down and homogenize every rich and diverse culture to the nth degree just like our food that we destroy in order for our mouth breathing consumer drone whores to understand it between glomping down our 10% beef patties and slurping more sugar water down their obese throats. WE LOVE YOU ALL YOU IDIOTS!"

*Puts on Chefs hat*
Well American Cuisine is really a compilation of the rest of the worlds. Due to us being a young country and being a blend of immigrants most American food is just someone else’s and we just add butter and garlic. smile.gif

We have southwestern which is the American version of food indigenous to Mexico and Spain. Most Chinese food has been Americanized due to our inability to handle some fish items and the fact most Americans would not eat real Chinese/Asian foods. New Orleans has taken French/African cuisine and locally available goods and blended it into something special and unique to the region. (I leave out many variations of blended cuisine as to not bore the reader.)

I believe you can trace most regions native dishes to one country or another with the exception of the South. I think the only real American Cuisine could be seen as Soul Food that originated here. It is based off the crops in the Southern US and is the main staple of most people in the south. And no it is not really healthy however in present day it can be altered to cut down on fat content. It originally develops from farmers that could not afford imported items and had no access to saltwater fish. Hence the main diet became vegetables and livestock raised on the farm and fish caught locally. In return a distinct way of cooking was formed much like the way traditional Italian, Irish, African, Asian, Indian, Spanish, English and French cuisine started.
*Takes off Chefs hat*

As for McDonalds they can suck it. Their food is a disgrace to Americans and should be outlawed. Not only is it horribly bad for you, it is a rip off. You are paying 5$ for something it cost them $0.30 to make. Support your local restaurants!! Just cause it is fast doesn’t mean it is good.

Embarrassingly, they did in my school's caf. Worse, there was a shocking number of people who actually took it seriously. This doesn't say much for human intelligence.

I think seeing that ad made me stupider.

Actually, there is some "American" food (not hamburgers and the lot) simply because things were growing there that don't anywhere else. So things like apple pie, cranberry sauce, and corn bread really are originally American.

I think you may be right about cranberry sauce and corn bread, but I'm pretty certain that apple pie has been around for longer than the United States.

Well, Wikipedia disagrees with you. Its article on the matter says that apple pie recipes date back to the 13th Century in England, which seems rather more likely. After all, apples originate in the Old World (central Asia, to be precise) and have appeared in Old World culture for many millennia (for example, the Golden Apple that features in the Ancient Greek story of Paris and the three goddesses, or Adam's Apple and the association of the apple with the story of the Forbidden Fruit). How could Squanto have had a recipe for apple pie if apples were introduced to the Americas by Europeans? tongue.gif
MistressAlti
Because he's Squanto. Squanto pwns you all. And we all know Europeans are liars, I mean, they claimed to "discover" the new world, and guess who was already here? Squanto. So pardon me if I don't believe your "Europeans had apples first" nonsense.
