Oooh, oooh, KotOR 2 is out on Friday (11/02/04).  Anyone else anticipating this?
*

I've pre-ordered it and it'll be arriving on Friday morning with any luck, I do have a soft spot for the original I have to say and like sean said, it's more of the same...but with more jedi classes and force powers and so on so it's more customisable, but, to be fair, I'm just as interested in the story as much as anything else. biggrin.gif
Mata
I've never heard of Geist, but Odama sounds interesting. I am skeptical though of how much fun a console pinball game can be. Pinball is about the tactile response, and I've never really found a home version that has quite the same appeal (apart from around my cousin's house, but he did actually buy a pinball machine, so I don't think that really counts).
PsychWardMike
I spent about three hours trying to find the blooming Penny Arcade that makes fun of Geist. The premise is essentially this - you're a ghost and you can inhabit any body of any thing to do... something (plot details are scarce right now). To do posess people, you have to scare them, but you can't out and out scare a person - first you have to posess something lower. Say, a dog. Even then, you can't possess the dog until he is scared, so you possess... his food. In the food, scare the dog, scare the human, in the human, kill people for <insert hopefully intelligent plot here> this reason. The screens look nice, but this game is very chancey.

Same way with Odama. I like pinball in a bar or Arcade or something... not on my Gamecube.

QUOTE (PsychWardMike @ Feb 9 2005, 11:07 PM)
Alright, so I must know... what are the thoughts of forumites about Odama?  For those of you who don't remember/know, it's the military pin ball game.  I'm skeptical, but open to new ideas...  this one could be great or horrible (as is the case with every game of course, save Devil May Cry 3 and Viewtiful Joe 3) but I'm intrigued.  Your thoughts?

And while on the subject of odd Nintendo games that may or may not be worth any salt, what of Geist?
*

Odama - interested by the concept, but reserve judgement until more details surface. I'm sceptical to say the least.

And what of Geist? What is, PWM (remembering that my work firewall blocks sites like ign, ninty and gamespot)
PsychWardMike
Alright, so I just got my new GameInformer yesterday. Wanda and the Colossus is shaping up to be an incredible game. It's amazing what they're doing with the limited power of the PS2 (as opposed to say, the Gamecube or XBox) and it looks like it's shaping up to be one of the best games of the year. I'm also pleased to admit that, though I'm a bit skeptical of any reviews save GMR (and hey! they've been cancelled!) it recieved a nice sturdy 9.

I must say, being the Capcom whore that I am, I need to pick up the MegamanX compilation pack. I used to have some fun with them.
Arachnidoc18
Ya know, Nintendo has really been stooping low lately. I mean, come on! Luigi and Mario in NBA street 3?
PsychWardMike
I dunno, I think that Nintendo is pretty good about stuff like that... they lend their characters to good games, and I have high hopes for the NBA Mario game. I would like to see Mario 128 be a call back to old mario... not necessarily a two dimensional side scroller so much as Yoshi, traditional Luigi, fireballs, mushrooms, etc. Mario 64 was great, but I'm ready to get back to my roots, dig?

That said, I need to pick up a nice copy of Mario Power Tennis. And I'm looking forward to Mario Baseball.

And to think that I used to be a Sonic only kind of guy...

Speaking of which! I saw announced the other day a new Sonic! Hopefully it'll be better than Heroes. Pretty much anything without Rouge the Bat will be better than Sonic Adventures 2.
PsychWardMike
And did I mention the new Mario DDR?! Yay! I love DDR and I love Mario, so I must love this game, yeah? I don't think I'll love buying new dance pads for the Gamecube. I recently helped my brother splurge on some metal pads (yay!) and I'm weary about investing more money into DDR. Save for expansion packs. *twitch twitch*

And has anyone played the Taiko drum master?
Arachnidoc18
Eh, It doesn't sound all that great, plus you have to buy a second copy of the game for two-player. I personally think it's just a bad rip of DDR.

So far I am the complete (excluding DDR) anti-PWM. *Bizzaro! Bizzaro!*
Jonman
Incidentally,

I've just picked up the first game off my list that I was looking forward to - got Phantom Brave in the post over the weekend, and only just had a chance to sit down with it briefly last night.

There's a direct link to Disgaea, both visually and in terms of mechanics, and that can only be a good thing. I can see myself getting horribly, horribly addicted to this one as well. It was Disgaea that forced me to go out and buy a replacement PS2 after my old one started getting the arse with playing blue discs.

Mmm, I'm excited to spend an appreciable amount of time with that game over the next few weeks. I'll have to try hard to fit in slices of Baten Kaitos, Paper Mario and Halo 2 inbetween sessions.

Woo-hoo!

I was under the impression that the gamecube was the least powerful of the three, xbox being top of course, I know I saw some statistics about it somewhere.
PsychWardMike
Nope. It goes in this order (strongest to least): XBox, Gamecube, PS2
Arachnidoc18
Nope. Max Bus Transfer rates: Xbox, ps2, GC.
All loads of crap I dont want to list.
ps2 and gc fight for second and third in several aspects, although xbox is decidedly more powerful.
PsychWardMike
Alright, at the risk of this becoming a pointless arguement, I'm going to say that I'm very sure that it goes Xbox - Gamecube - PS2. May Mata, Jonman, or Commie strike me down if I'm wrong, but until then (or other such proof) I'm staying with it.
CommieBastard
Well, I'm pretty sure it's not as easy as saying one box is "more powerful" than another...

Your computer has a better processor, mine has more RAM. Yours has a bigger hard drive, but mine has a better graphics card.

See my point?
Sir Psycho Sexy
For the record, the KotOR2 story looks to be unfolding well, the character development is interesting, but the graphics are the same as the origianal and there are subtle glitches and bugs...well...not really subtle, I just walked past a duplicate of someone who is in my party....while they were with me...that was odd, makes me wonder if they ones I've killed will still be there too....hmm...but thumbs up story-wise!!
(might be biased because it's star wars) unsure.gif

oh, mike, I'll make my own opinions of consoles, ever since you refered to the xbox as the n64 of this generation of consoles...I just....well, it was more opinion than fact wasn't it?
little_bear
Aye, KoTOR 2 is shaping up well, from what I've played. Its certainly similar to the original (not that that is a bad thing) but there are also differences. It comes across as less polished, and there are numerous bugs as SPS mentioned. Its a lot heavier on the chatter as well I've noticed, not that it bothers me, but it may for some people who don't like hanging around watching cut scenes or listening to NPCs. But, what I am enjoying is that there is far more choice this time around. Slaughtering masses isn't the only way to become evil, its the little things that now add to your dark side or light side points. Which is nice.

As I said, its a cracking little game. As good as the first? By no means. Good? Oh most definitely.
Mata
I kept on forgetting to add this one:

I'm looking forward to Red Ninja: End of honour. Admittedly It Does Have: A Dramatic Two Part Title, but I can forgive this because it looks like it might actually be really fun. It has the potential to be like a cross between Tenchu and Prince of Persia. If it manages it then it could really be something special. It's actually had a good few months longer preparation time than it was going to have originally (due to publisher problems) and it sounds like the time has helped it become really polished. I have high hopes!
Greeneyes
Yoinky Toinky Toink. There. Off topic I know, but it will save people looking for it.

Pfft. You're just a sucker for ninja games. Dress flippin' Spiro the Dragon in a ninja suit, give 'im a couple of shuriken and you'll be drooling and frothing at the mouth.

Ninja games started and stopped with The Last Ninja. Everything else since has been poo.

*removes drunken retro goggles*

I can't figure out why I'm so intrigued by Resi 4. After thoroughly not enjoying Resi 1 rehashed on GC, finding little merit in Code Veronica, and laughing out loud at the all-round crapness of RE:Zero, I ought to have learnt my lesson. But no. Tsk.
Mata
Maybe you're a sucker for zombie games? biggrin.gif I suspect it's more likely the 9/10 mark in Edge though, that's always quite persuasive. I'm tempted by it, but slightly repulsed by the idea of having to use the GC controller, I really do find it crude to use. I think it's coming out on PS2 in a little while, so I might wait until then.

But anyway... Spiro in a ninja suit... NINJAS that are really DRAGONS! YAY! Count me in! I think you're just biased against ninja games because they always involve a third person perspective and don't generally feature sixteen-level deep menus.

Yes, I love ninja games, but that's mainly due to my love of the third person perspective. I love action games, but I find first person inhibiting. I like the sense of moving through space, so third person is perfect. Oddly, I find seeing the body of the character more useful for envisioning my location in the game than the first person perspective. Maybe it's because there's so little sense of physical effort involved with first person games; you never really feel like the jump was anything more than a graceful arc taken by your disembodied camera.

In this regard, ninja games are often the most compelling. They require the careful judgement of space for success. They combine this with the pure fact that ninjas are downright bloomin' stylish. I like a game with style. Would Strider have been as good without the exagerated poses of the main character? I don't think it would, because the style of a game's rendition of the space and characters are what defines your experience. Doom 3's engine could easily be re-skinned to be adventures in bunny-land, but the game would lack what charms it currently possesses. Ninjas are just downright cool.

Now, dragon ninjas... They might be even cooler...

On second thoughts, Doom 3 remade as Adventures in Bunny-land would probably be just as terrifying as the original.
PsychWardMike
I'd be wary of the PS2 Resident Evil 4, Mata. It's supposed to lose a lot of power and playability. As for the controller, I've played it and enjoy it a great deal.

Anyway, God of War seems to be getting a lot of high praise and I've always enjoyed a bit of Greek mythology. It looks like fun.

And now for the bombshell...

SOULCALIBUR III!

Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

YAY!!!

*dances*
Mata
Yes, I am mindful of the reduced power of the PS2, but I've eventually come to the conclusion that I really don't like the GC controller. I may buy RE4 for the GC, but if I do it will partially be because it's about time I had a game on there that convinced me it was worth buying the GC to play!

I've never been as into the Soul Cal games as the Tekken ones, but I've not really had people to play against when I've owned SC2, whereas I did when I first got Tekken, and those type of games are all about the competition.

God Of War does look like it could be really fun. Then again, I had high hopes for 'Stolen' and that's apparently pretty average. Oh well.
PsychWardMike
As is Red Ninja, Mata. I've seen nothing but poo about that game.

Death Jr. looks amazing, though. If I had money for a PSP, I'd definitely pick it up. And still... Soul Calibur III. Also, I'm pleased that Ratchet 4 is announced (Called Ratchet: Deadlocked) but I fear it may lose its charm in an attempt to be a Halo Killer and more mature. Note that "Clank" does not appear and people are speculating that it'll be a squad based shooter. I'm a bit worried, but I'll probably buy it anyway.
Mata

Really? Where's that? The previews I've seen in Edge (a UK based games magazine that's well known for being picky gits) have generally been very positive so far. Certainly the graphics aren't particularly sophisticated, but the game looks rather fun. There does seem to be a fair amount of inventiveness in the weapon. I rather like the idea of catching a guard with the wire, running a circle around his mate, pulling the wire taut and chopping the mate in half. As with all things, we'll have to wait and see the final thing. It is currently looking like the kind of game I will really enjoy but that won't be everyone's cup of tea, which I'm fine with.

And Mike, the reviews of DMC3 do all say that it seems to have fulfilled a lot of its promise, so I may be getting that eventually (when it's cheap!).

I'm always worried when fun cartoony games decide that they want to become more mature. That always seems to mean snarling instead of saying things, having a murky palette, wearing leather, and having squishier sound-effects. I just hope that they don't bring in a nu metal soundtrack.
PsychWardMike
Indeed. My only sources are Electronic Gaming Monthly and Game Infomer. While I'm not a fan of GI per se, I usually trust EGM on this sort of thing. They say that the gameplay's not too bad, but the camera is wonky and it focuses too much on the fact that the girl Ninja happens to wear underwear (apparently panty shots are not few and far between)

And yeah I've played DMC3 - it's loads of fun. Much more challenging and better designed than the first two.

And for Ratchet: again, you're right. I hope that it doesn't do the PoP thing where even though the sequel is in and of itself a good game, it loses the brilliant feel of the previous that made the first so endearing. I love the Ratchet series, but it doesn't need to be a Halo killer!

Anyway, going on. I don't think anyone's said FFXII. The graphics are very impressive indeed, but I must say I'm either intrigued or put off by the combat system. Will it be a Tales of Symphonia kind of thing or something completely different? I can't really make heads or tales of it.

ROFFLE! So true. Sooo true. You know, I've tried so hard to like 3rd person games. Even good third person games. I've tried playing Ico, and it not only fails to interest me, it's positively bores me. I can't even bring myself to put Onimusha 2 into the PS2 to give that a whirl. First person though, I find way more involving, oddly, without an avatar, I feel more connection to the character. I've been rediscovering my love of action games recently with Halo 2 (with big TV + chunky headphones). I regularly get admonished by the wife for shouting and yelling abuse at the telly - totally unconscious of it meself, but there you go).

I've pretty sure there's a connector you can get that let's you plug your PS2 pad into a GC. Have a look on Lik-Sang. (I'm blocked from that site here, otherwise I'd find you one). The large drop in aesthetic quality that comes with PS2 games when they're ported often puts me off.

On that vein, I've finally got around to picking up Burnout 3 off of the 'Bay, and I'm looking forward to that arriving in a shiny green Xbox box in a few days. Been meaning to pick that up since Mata was raving about it when it was first released...

This just in from Penny Arcade. Reprinted here as the front page text changes every day to keep up with each new comic....

QUOTE (Penny Arcade)
God of War is absolutely, unapologetically depraved.

I'm serious. It is as though every base urge has been codified in the game, to the extent that you may sate yourself on dark fantasies. These indulgences usually come in the form of masterfully animated custom moves - "fatalities," to delve into parlance - which are unique for each enemy type and almost endlessly entertaining. Imagine that there is a Harpy swooping overhead, and that you have become perplexed by said harpy. Let me break it down for you:

Other games: Hit harpy with weapon.

God of War: Grab each leathery wingtip, yanking the creature out of the sky. Place your boot on the back of the neck and pull off the Goddamn wings with a strong upward motion.

That's just one guy. I could pack the entire post dense with the desecrations one is capable of, and it would not convey the power of it. The new attacks and ability progression all feel like "cream," because straight out the gate your capacity to dispense raw damage is unparalleled. They're like the courses you might take evenings at the Community College, the "Extended Learning" programs which focus on calligraphy or mesmerism.

Put simply you are fully engaged at every moment, fully complicit in each heroic feat - legendary boss battles have fully interactive elements that would be cinemas in any other game. Your utter complicity in each heinous act will enrage Watchdog Groups, provided they ever realize there are videogames produced by companies other than Rockstar or id. There was a Public Service Announcement I saw recently from the group Mediawise, where a young boy relates his experiences in Grand Theft Auto in the first person. Harrowing. That said, GTA doesn't feature a "Sex With Two Women" minigame or superhot Oracles who are ready to nurse at a moment's notice.

The only issue one could reasonably submit - outside of the vexing moral ones - is that God of War just asks too much from the poor machine sometimes. Not often enough to really grate on a person, just every now and then, so you get the impression that the developer is saying "Come on little PS2, you can do it" and the PS2 replies "I am an ancient and decrepit thing, a tangle of bones and hair just as one might find in a crypt."
Mata
Well. That sounds jolly good fun doesn't it? smile.gif I had heard that it is a rather blood thirsty game...

http://www.penny-arcade.com/view.php3?date=2005-03-27&res=l

My current lack of finances has pushed me into going back to old games to play through them again. I've cracked through Metal Gear Solid 2 in no time, and I think I enjoyed it more this time around, partially because I wasn't so interested in finding hidden stuff. Does anyone else get that? Search-fartigue? Games like MGS have so many things tucked away in the corners that you spend hours looking for them and find that you've then become totally disengaged with the narrative?

I've been back onto SSX3, and confirming my thoughts that while it does present a nicely unified space in which to play, the actual level design isn't quite as joyously daft as 2.

I'm pondering returning to the beginning of Half-Life. This time through I'll make sure that I've got enough ammo to kill the damn-near indestructable alien beastie right by the end of the game. Grrr....

I'm skeptical, but the new Marvel Vs. EA game is shaping up rather nicely, methinks. If nothing else, it's damned pretty, butthe gameplay and character design/roster is up in the air.

Oh oh! And the new Capcom X Namco RPG in which all sorts of Capcom and Namco characters meet in an RPG setting. Much happiness, assuming that it actually does come over to America.
Mata
Yep, I happily spent last summer wandering through SNES-emulated Shadowrun smile.gif I had a go on Bahamut's Lagoon, but it would only work on the lesser of two emulators, so I never really got into it.

One thing I have found with RPG's and emulators is a problem with saving. Because you can save anywhere, if you die you only go back to your last save point. If you've just fought all the way through a tough dungeon to a big beastie that you're not tough enough to beat, you may then have to fight your way back out again. In the original you'd simply be sent back to the outside-the-dungeon savepoint. A small issue, but very scary when you come up against it!

I've never been excited by 'IP v.s Other-company's-IP' games. I think I'm motivated by predominantly single character narratives, so having two dozen characters just tells me that none of them are really going to get much attention... It's a far cry from the old days of gaming where the was usually just three colours and the truth (the truth being 'they are bad, collect stuff to stop them').

I am the same way with 1st person shooters. I feel like I lose some awareness and I find it harder when being attacked from the side or rear to compensate, find cover and react. However, I just finished Road To Hill 30 and loved it. It is more squad based movement and strategy than just shoot till you’re out of amo play. The story line was a bit trite though. With all the WWII history out there you would think you could have dialogue that wasn’t overly dramatic or overly heroic. This was more of the dramatic reluctant hero persuasion.
I am thinking Halo 2 next since I am already in the 1st person mind set.

On the God Of War demo disc, any enemy that pissed me off I would immediately rip him in two. (Watch as the enemy shakes his head "no" and struggles in realisation of what is to come of him)

Splinter Cell: Chaos theory. I have the game, and I'd recommend it to thinkers who don't like just "shoot, kill, kill, kill" games.

Lambert:"Of course not. This is no video game, Fisher."

Meh. I don't play stealth games, really. I play games so I can do the impossible, not the improbable. If I have enemies, then by god I want to be able to summon down a giant dragon to smote those bitchazz!
