Ok, so there are quite a number of gamers out there in Matazone land, so I decided to pose a new question for all of you.

A friends of mine is running a radio show on her campus, and its main focus is playing requests of video game music. So I was inspred to ask you guys what your favorite video game music is. So, what is it?

My favories have got to be some of the classics- Zelda, FFIII (VI), and Super Mario RPG

And even Tales of Symphonia and Super Mario Sunshine had some good tunes.

A friend of mine has the entire Final Fantasy VII soundtrack on CD, it's a good listen. I suppose that'd be my personal favourite, especially Aeris' Theme and Turk Fire.

I've not really been that keen on much game music for quite a while, but 'A Thousand Years' in FFX-2 was a nice song.

Before that we're going back to Bionic Commandos, Dizzy, and Auf Weidersehn Monty on the Spectrum. The Robocop music on the C64 was good too.

I have a minidisc somewhere of Zelda's music. Now that was good stuff.

Ohh and Dizzy, I think I can vaguely remember it was distinctive. I love that egg.

My brother has a recording of the Japanese Philharmonic doing Nintendo classics. It's a good listen. I liked "A Thousand Years," too. Um, apart from that, I don't know... I really like Onimusha and haven't checked out my copy of the Silent Hill 3 soundtrack. I like Guilty Gear music, too, but my favorite has to be the sweeping score of Soul Calibur. Sweet stuff, baby.

...though how you can compare the audio abilities of the Commodore 64 with the Spectrum, I don't know. biggrin.gif

But yes, I was going to say much the same. Many of the C64 games I played years ago were perhaps more for the music than the gameplay. Indeed, even today I find myself at the piano, picking out the simple melody of 'Treasure Island Dizzy', 'Bubble Bobble', or 'Paperboy'. Not that (I must add), those games had particularly good music, it is just that the music stuck with me.

Incidentally, for anyone interested in hearing remixes of old C64 game music: http://remix.kwed.org/

Strangely, the market for this stuff is growing so big that, in countries where its popular (japancoughcrazyjaps) there are actually bands that play music from computer games Nintendo is a popular source, with themes from Mario and Zelda being quite common. I remember our audio lecturer going over this a while ago and showing us some of the sites (with streaming and everything!) which was interesting, if a little disturbing... I wish I could remember them now, to post a link. I suppose if any of you are interested you could always just google it...

But yeah, I like a lot of the old console music as well, though my memories are of the sonic themes and Kid Chameleon... more of a megadrive gamer than most else. But I wholeheartedly agree about Dizzy; that egg could bust some great tunes every now and then!

Also for anyone looking for videogame remixes of all old game systems, may I suggest Overclocked Remix. This stuff gets addicting after awhile, there used to be a thread in this forum about it... oh yes. A real old thread can be found here.

I strongly recommend Minibosses biggrin.gif They play NES music on guitars, bass and drums.

I did a research paper on the evolution of video game music last year, so I know a little about it. The best are those in the most memorable games, and listening to the music will bring back a flood of memories of hours of button mashing and frustration smile.gif

There are some great MIDI files out there - I suggest the following:

If you need more, just google for it. These sites will remind you of all the great music out there, the next step would be finding instrumental recordings of them, or seeing if someone at your college's music comp. program would arrange them for instruments, and then seeing if anybody would be interested in performing them, you'd be surprized at how many musicians would like to play video game music.

If you want to progress past the simple music in the older systems, though I don't know why, then you get to much more complex music that was stored on CD's, and was sometimes already instrumental. I have a CD of Grandia II music, which is decent. I also like the music in many of Black Isle's games, it had good transitions, strong melodies, and well used harmonic progressions. If you need any more information, I'd be happy to do some research.

I quite like the age of empires theme.

A band called Ozma did a nice cover of the Tetris theme.

Oh! - and I would be remiss if I failed to mention the Black Mages, the band of none other than Nobuo Uematsu himself! Their versions of the music of Final Fantasy are absolutely fantastic.
Arachnidoc18
Ratchet and Clank 2's Taboran theme. I love that song.
