So movies bore me without music. A movie could be about nothing, but if it has a fitting soundtrack, then I'll enjoy it more. So, which movie music do you like?
Alright - John Williams is pretty great. All of his fanfares in various movies are great. Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Superman in particular. His music for Jurassic Park, while beautiful, didn't really fit as a main theme for a primarily action movie. Williams's new stuff is a little weird though... I didn't dig A.I. or Harry Potter, though they were both still well written.
Tarantino's movies are great, the script writing, acting, and style are amazing, but one of my favorite things about his stuff is that the music in a Tarantino movie is almost a character to itself. Think of it - Pulp Fiction is great, and the music adds amazingly. Think of the dancing scene, the opening, it's all great. Resevoir Dogs's torture scene would have lost an incredible amount of poignancy without "Stuck in the Middle with You." Kill Bill, the same.
So... commentate.

While I agree that certain directors, like Tarantino, use contempory music to great effect, I only tend to remember the music if its an epic score. I can think of the themes of Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Wars etc, but I can't remember much of the music from American Beauty, Memento and other films I consider to be my favourites. With one notable exception:
The Pixies at the end of Fight Club. Perfect.

I think music was used well in "American beauty" it's one of my favorite movies to have playing in the background while still being thoughtful I think it would be nothing if it didn't have the music it does.

My favourite composer would have to be Ennio Morricone, known for his role in making the music for Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns. His best word would've had to have been the soundtrack to Once Upon a Time in America. I also liked how Tarantino put some of his tunes from The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly into Kill Bill...

Clint Mansell's music for Pi and Requiem for a Dream in both cases the music really added to the film and stuck in my mind, also they were scores that worked as music in their own right.
Stephen Trask's songs for Hedwig and the Angry Inch made that a musical for people who normally hate, loath and detest musicals (like me)
Empire Records also was good for the music mixing British and American Classics in a way that enhanced the story.

The Mask with Jim Carey, baby. Great great movie... but its music was definitely a selling point. Royal Crown Revue's "Hey Pachucco" still gets a listen quite often around here.

I loved the music in Oceans 11, but that's probably just because I love Debussy...

I always liked the music in Blazing Saddles. It's slightly "classic western," but it fits the moods of the movie quite well, not to mention the opening theme is quite entertaining.
And yes, I do love the classic Jurassic Park music. I've even been known to randomly hum and wistle it from time to time. Like when I'm writing a paper and my roomie's trying to watch TV

Koyaanisqatsi. Full stop (or Period, for you over-the-Atlantics). The music is just as much of the film as the images are, if not more. Philip Glass > *.
