--- Original post: ---
Audioscrobbler (now called Last.fm) have finally updated the group lists, but they've changed it so instead of showing how many times a particular artist has been listened to, they now have it showing how many different people have listened to that artist.

So its now clearer to see who the most popular bands are amongst matazonians.

However, this is much more impressive in other groups I'm in, where there are more members, so I'm asking anyone with a decent internet connection who listens to music on their computer to sign up.

Click here to find out more about Last.fm.
Click here to see the Matazone group.
Click here to see my last.fm page.

Don't worry Mods, unless there are major changes to the site, I'm not going to spam this again.
Jaq
Isn't it obvious who the band is amongst matazonians? Modest Mouse. pft.

do we really need audioscrobbler for that?

/me joined anyways
Forever Unknown
I like seeing AFI at the top there. We've got the most fabulous music taste, us lot. System, Green Day, Modest Mouse... We're wicked.

I need to remember to keep using my WinAmp, actually, dammit... I've recently gone on a Cd binge instead. Bah.

But. Um. Yes. Join!

Heh, I'm currently using it on 56k.. It's not much of a drain, it just connects to the server every now and again to submit a new song.

I've considered joining - but being the PC retard that I am I wouldn't even know where to start. blush.gif

I may corner FU and ask her to explain the niceties to me.

Snugglebum: A Step by Step Guide to Joining Audioscrobbler.

I apologise in advance if any or all of this seems incredibly patronising:

1. Go here to sign up for an audioscrobbler account.

2. Go here to download a plugin. You need to make sure you get the right plug-in for whatever media player you use to listen to music on (This will probably be either Winamp or Windows Media Player).

3. Once the download has finished, run the .exe file and it should install the plug-in for you. Next time you load the media player, it will ask you for your audioscrobbler account details.

4. Check the tags on your files. For a file to be accepted by Audioscrobbler, it needs the Artist and Trackname fields to contain some data. In Winamp, you can change the tag info by right-clicking and selecting 'View file info...'. In Windows Media Player, you right click and select 'Advanced Tag Editor'. Audioscrobbler only registers that you've listened to a song

And you're done. Its that simple. Now JOIN!

You said something about needing to get music onto your computer in the first place.

You can legally download mp3s from this handy site, but the selection is very limited.

I would not, of course, use Mata's lovely boards to advocate illegally downloading songs, but I've heard from less reputable people that WinMX is a useful file-sharing program for that.

If you want to copy music from CD to your computer, you can use CDEx.

If you've got any questions about any of that, feel free to PM me, or pester me if I'm in IRC.

And now I would like to take this opportunity to say to everyone else on the board: JOIN! You know you want to.
Mata
I joined up a week or two ago, and I appear to be the only person listening to Bjork, Johnny Cash, and Alisha's Attic.

I was impressed by how easy it was to set up.

EDIT: I take that back... Although I'm not sure of the accuracy: are other people really listening to Johnny Cash? He really was The Man.

Oh not at all - it's the only way to deal with me. biggrin.gif

Okay - I'll join this week.

It says three people have been listening to Cash, same amount of people have been listening to Modest Mouse. I am not sure of the accuracy either.
IrishGuy
I listen to Cash! He is The Man. Totally awesome.

Mata, I've added you to my friends list, I hope you appreciate the relationship between us that I put. If it's too disturbing I'll change it coz I don't want to give you nightmares

Have started scrobbling and joined your group, expect my weird taste in music to be influneceing the chart any time soon
CheeseMoose
Why does it not work? Why does my computer hate me? Why do my tracks played not come up?

/cry of despair
Novander
Theres a number of possibilities: Your files aren't tagged properly. Your files aren't mp3s (I'm not sure if other media types work). You're skipping through them, or they're shorter than 30 seconds. Audioscrobbler is just taking ages to process them.

Maybe other reasons as well, but those are the most common.
CheeseMoose
Dunno about file tagging, they are mp3s mainly, on average just over 5mins. I blame AudioScrobbler
I_am_the_best
I also joined, but it doesn't seem to like me too much either.. I think that some of the stuff I listen to is perhaps a bit less than 30sec because I'm just trying to make synthesized sounds of instruments to predict how my composition will sound with and orchaestra... but the majority is longer...? sad.gif

That's the most common problem, in my experience - it IS a free service after all, it has a lot of customers and a limited amount of resources. Be patient and it'll get through, more often than not.

As for whether other file types get through, I've seen m4a and ogg also register when tagged properly.

*bump*

c'mon people... Lo has joined now you should all follow Lo like good little sheep!
Mata
For some reason I seem to have lost the place where the group stats are kept... Or are they not showing at the moment?
snoo
The group stats have vanished... not sure why, probably something to do with the problems they had last week, they should be back next week hopefully!
Wytukaze
To jump back to the Johnny Cash question.. I know of four people who're listening to him on AS: Mata (obviously), me, Samorine and iamtehvic (IrishGuy).

And yes, join!

And yes, the group stats are funny.

And yes, I'm quite partial to a cookie from time to time.

Someone buy me a Johnny Cash album? Pweese? *flutters eyelashes*

I considered joining, but for two problems. One, my music player, MusicMatch Jukebox isn't supported. Two - I don't really listen to much music on the PC, and when I do, it's usually mixes I've downloaded from online acquaintances who nobody will have heard of.
Mata
I used MusicMatch years ago, I've not tried it recently, but I can safely say that I'm seriously impressed with the current version of Winamp, which is fully supported by AS. Try it, you might like it smile.gif

Commie, I see you've been caught with 'The Silver Mount Zion Memorial Orchestra and the Tra-La-La Band' bug too. Would this be the influence of a certain frog that I detect here?

My lot certainly is a mixed bunch!

http://www.audioscrobbler.com/user/Matazone/

EDIT: There's also a cool plug-in for Firefox that lets you control your music player from the browser window. It's a must for music junkies!
Novander
The group weekly stats have been fixed now apparently, so they'll probably be updated some time this week.

So yeah, everybody join now.

It would! biggrin.gif She sent me the music a while back, it's fantastic stuff.
JimiJimi
OK, I've joined the Matazone group, and I've installed all the plugin-ness, and now I'm just gonna hope that something happens.

If you see lots of SRV/Hendrix/AIC music then that's a sign that it be working for me...
Mata
Hey! I was looking forward to seeing what everyone's been listening to! *feels cheated despite the fact that it's a free service and probably takes a huge amount of work to make happen*
Novander
If you're really bored you can still trawl through all of our profiles for a more in depth view of what we're listening to. But yeah, they said they'd fixed the groups and they'd be back up soon. That was about a week ago. Damn them. I might even donate, just so I've got more of a right to complain.

Is your current signature from 'Fallen'? If it is, thats strange 'cause I watched that film for the first time yesterday.
Mata
As big lips himself sings: Yes it is!

I watched it again last week for the first time in ages and it reminded me what a good song that is. Expect to see it on my AS list soon! I love 'Fallen', it's one of my favourite movies I think. I don't watch it often but whenever I do I always really enjoy it. Everyone puts in a great performance and the plot is great. Even when you know the film it's still just as much fun!
Novander
I loved the overall idea of the film, but I'm not sure how I felt about the ending. I won't say any more about it though, as people here may (and should) want to see it.

But anyway, the reason I bump: The groups stats are back up! Hooray!

Hands up if you've been listening to Radiohead.
Mata
Hahahaha Okay, the only thing in the weekly track chart from me is Björk - All Is Full of Love. I guess my tastes don't match with other people on here very well!
gothictheysay
There there Mata, I still don't think I've listened to a full song by NIN, and there's everyone else all over them. tongue.gif

However, I have been listening to Radiohead. Far too much. As usual.
JimiJimi
Hmm... I signed up, did everything you said to do like installing the plugin etc. and none of my music seems to be on there...

Any ideas as to why?
Novander
Look here.

If you look at all of that and still think 'hey... uh... no... still don't get it' then listen to some songs and then PM me a copy of your audioscrobbler log file, and I'll take a look to see if I can work out why its not happening.

If you're using winamp and you installed everything in default directories, the log file can be found at Program Files\Winamp\Plugins\Audioscrobbler.log

And yeah, that goes for anyone else who's having problems.
MrTeapot
Yo Novander, since you seem to know a little about this can you tell me whats up? My songs are put into the update thing but it never says that they were recently played.

The log file showed this.

CODE
ERROR - Response was invalid
ERROR - ReqID 0, Last response from the server was unreadable ()

But I know that I'm playing songs that have been read at one point, just they've suddenly become unreadable. *shrug* I have WMP v10, which I've had a while and has only stopped updating my 'recently played' list so I know it can't be that.

Any ideas?

Mata
What would be really cool would be if they saved the previous week's charts and then gave you little comparison icons to indicate, for example, if a track by Pulp is being listened to more or less this week. Another example, VNV Nation appear to have dropped off the chart, so we must have a new entry, but what is it?
Mata
I see my current spate of listening to Bill Bailey has so far not made a dent on the chart...
Mata
Oo, look! It's gone all posh!

Novander
Its been like that for about two months now. I don't like the way it doesnt show the charts on the main page anymore.

Permissions-wise, Mata has all the rights of the group leader, and I'm about to go through giving you all journal access rights. In case you're feeling a little bit music-journalisty and want to let it all out.

And if you haven't joined yet, I really think its time you did.
moop
Hehehe, a song I made showed up on the Matazone group. biggrin.gif
bryden42
just joined biggrin.gif
Mata
Ah, so what are you going to be bringing into the mix Bryden?

I'm proud to add in another vote for Johnny Cash, but I think I'm the sole supporter of Future Sound Of London.
bryden42
my music collection is about as varied as it gets, from 2 unlimited to johnny cash, from sisters of mercy to dolly parton, from nick cave to beethoven, from toto coelo to william shatner. you get the idea. but in general i'm an old school goth with a bit of industrial thrown in who happens to like disco, Metal, mowtown, punk, funk and eighties. smile.gif

I'm one of the Ladytron fans.

And who's the other person listening to Jethro Tull?

I'm another Ladytron fan, also probably partially to blame for the fact KOMPRESSOR is on there.
