Industrial Kybosh
I often suspect that many of us here - myself included - try to make themselves sound more interesting by discussing only the more obscure or better-quality strands of music that we choose to listen to. Surely, however, there is more on our playlists than the quality stuff.

Here's the plan, and it requires TOTAL honesty:

1. Make a random playlist using whatever software you store your lovely music on - I shall be using iTunes, being a damn dirty yuppie Mac-bitch.
2. Make note of the first ten songs that appear. Ten shall be the number, and the number shall be ten. No correspondance shall be entered in to.
3. Post those ten songs in this thread, perhaps with a little bit about why you say you listen to Sigur Rós and Miles Davis when you actually have a hard drive full of East 17 and Spice Girls.

Let the games begin!

First up, to show willing, my random ten for the day:

1. Why Don't You Do It For Me? - 22-20s
2. Güero Canelo - Calexico
3. Hanging On The Telephone - Scheer
4. Debaser - The Pixies
5. Long Snake Moan - P J Harvey
6. I Wanna Rock - Twisted Sister
7. Needles & Pins - The Ramones
8. Paranoid - Black Sabbath
9. Aerodynamik (Kling Klang Radio Mix) - Kraftwork
10. Spiral Staircase - Kings Of Leon

Which just goes to show that I talk the talk and walk the walk. Hmm? No you didn't see Twisted Sister in there. Move along now.
Moosh
1) Money Talks - AC/DC
2) Out From Under - Incubus
3) Sexed Up - Robbie Williams
4) Thoughts of a Dying Atheist - Muse
5) 22 Acacia Avenue - Iron Maiden
6) Tribute - Tenacious D
7) Never Alone - Bif Naked
8) Take the Power Back - Rage Against the Machine
9) Cave - Muse
10) All These Things That I've Done - The Killers

My excuse is that most of the above is my sister's music and I only like 1, 4, 5, 8 and 9
little_bear
Well, seeing as I'm an ignoramus when it comes to computers I simply selected play all in WMP and took the first ten tracks that came up shuffled.

1. Feeling a Moment - Feeder
2. 40ft - Franz Ferdinand
3. Apache - The Shadows
4. Come Back Around - Feeder
5. We Will Rock You - Queen
6. Sunday, Sunday - Blur
7. Under Pressure - Queen and David Bowie
8. Mosh - Eminem
9. Frequency - Feeder
10. Buck Rogers - Feeder

Judging by the fact that I have all the Feeder albums on my PC, it's hardly surprising that four of them surfaced in that random play through.

*is a fanboy*
Jaq
1. Somewhere Over the Rainbow - Punk Cover (I don't know the artist, that's just what the artist column says it is)

2. Darts of Pleasure - Franz Ferdinand

3. There's Always Someone Cooler than you - Ben Folds Five

4. Narcolepsy - Ben Folds Five

5. Kids Will Be Skeletons - Mogwai

6. Karma Payment Plan - Modest Mouse

7. Even it Up - Heart (You love Joan Jett too, don't deny it)

8. Sparkling Diamonds - Moulin Rouge (I'm not sure if that's the real name of the song)

9. Song of Joy - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

10. Lord Anthony - Belle and Sebastian

Hmmmm... not too bad, I think a pretty good sample of what I like to listen to

Ahh, so Jaq likes teh 'Dear Catastrophe Waitress'. Word to your fey schmindie credentials. New album in May - hopefully it won't break their moderately unblemished record for quality folk-pop whimsy.

Hmmm. Not sure which word you understood. Anyhoo, 'schmindie' is a shortened version of a now little-used music journalism phrase, 'indie-schmindie', relating to any style of music in the indie canon that sounds like it is played by nice young men in chunky-knit jumpers and brown corduroy slacks.

It's a good thing. You are good. Relax. Look at the baby. Be calm.

Eep. OK, iTunes placed on shuffle.

And the first is.......
Bjork's Triumph of a Heart
followed in short order by Phish: Golgi Apparatus
Stone Temple Pilots: Big Empty
Radiohead: High and Dry
Incubus: Nebula
Reel Big Fish: F*ck Off Song/You Don't Know
Nightmare Before Christmas: Poor Jack
The Cure: Hello, I Love You (doors cover)

Could have been worse. iTunes could've picked up my mom's Alicia Keys. *shudders away*
Usurper MrTeapot
1) Franz Ferdinand - Dark Of The Matinee
2) Slayer - Disciple
3) Pantera - Like Fire
4) Pink Floyd - Eclipse
5) Manowar - Army of the Immortals
6) Radiohead - Sit down, shut up
7) Muse - Suburn
8) Tool - Bottom
9) Tenacious D - Rock Your Socks
10) The Vapours - Turning Japanese

Not suprised the Pantera or Slayer came up, I've got their entire back catalogues but I hardly listen to any of it.
There was another 'song' which I skipped through. Mostly because it was a 3 second long voice recording of the word "ahhblaa" which I have in my media player for unknown reasons, if you really want it to be included place it under 6b).

Not a bad mix I guess, luckilly my cover of being a hardcore Polka music fan has not been blown.
Daedalus
1: Macy's Day Parade - Green Day
2: Hooker With a Penis - Tool
3: Take the Power Back - Rage Against the Machine

6: All for You, Sophia - Franz Ferdinand
7: Jimmy - Tool
8: Something I Can Never Have - Nine Inch Nails
9: Everlong - Foo Fighters
10: Millionaire - Queens Of The Stone Age

That's not very embarrassing at all really (although I hardly listen to any Franz Ferdinand). Not that representative of all the music on my computer though.I'm sure there'd be far more dodgy things if I'd done this on my computer at home. A bit surprised that there's no SOAD on that list, considering I have 3 albums by them. Not at all surprising that NIN appeared twice, though. *fanatic*

Out of 2320 songs on iTunes...

2. Wicked Town (Hedwig Version) by Various Artists from the Hedwig and the Angry Inch soundtrack (play count 5)
3. Stingy by Ginuwine (play count 0)
4. ZAN by Dir en Grey (play count 278)

8. Hard House Mix CD by DJ Irene (play count 0)
9. Only You by Sulk (play count 1056)
10. Maria Maria by Santana (play count 3)

Most my songs that I listen to have play counts over 300... and I've had the same music for at least a year. Erm, so, yeah. I don't listen to some of that stuff often. ^.^ And a good lot of my music has just been stolen from other people (like, I network with them and we trade music files, about 2 or 3 gigs worth at a time). So, that could account for the weirdness.

I will play as I'm doing bugger all else.

1. August by Shooglenifty.
A band of Scots who play club-tinged celt-dancepop. Yeah, okay, but it's wicked, I promise. Their fiddler looks like Serj Tankian. Sort of. And he's also a wizard or something. This song is slow and mindful of it's vinyl-crackling beat and dubby bass, the banjo plucked so skillfully, with a superb violin melody that dips and weaves fluidly into a sparse arrangement of half-heard samples, instrument phrases and electronic wheezes before deftly picking up again and pulling the the band into line behind it. I love this. 'Tis perfect.

2. Black Holes In The Sand by Gravenhurst.
Spectral acoustic guitar music on Warp Records. Yeah, okay. Nick Talbot's bittersweet vocal harmonies are moved along on a neat four-four tom with expertly picked guitar and the occasional tempered squall of feedback. Haunting.

3. Omgyjya Switch7 by Aphex Twin.
A frantic mash of noise from Drukqs which deploys wonderful synth manipulation and beat-fracturing to cunningly disguise the fact that Mr. D. James isn't doing anything half as imaginative or original as he used to. Still fun, though.

4. Tried By 12 (Squarepusher mix) by East Flatbush Project.
Random playlists throwing up two Warp artists and a Ninja Tune track remixed by a Warp artist back to back. What fun. Excellent li'l spit chopped up and backed by Jenkinson's old drum 'n' bass trick of actually playing real drums and bass, and like the best of his old material, 'tis very jazz club. Then you got that wicked reeeewind and the whole thing kicks off again.

5. Manta Ray by Pixies.
One of my favourite Pixies b's, complete with "ooh ooh, yeah!"s and Kim Deal sweetly calling "it's alright!" while Black Francis simply yells it. I love Pixies. Don't you?

6. Faster by Manic Street Preachers.
Best. Manics. Ever.

7. Killing All The Flies by Mogwai.
I love Happy Songs For Happy People, and this is excellent. That vocodered vocal coming over like a heartbroken robot, singing in robot falsetto as the languid picked guitar phrase gives way to kidney-battering fuzz and great squalls of feedback in the finest of Mogwai traditions. Yeah, it's an old trick, but they do it so well.

8. Beep Street by Squarepusher.
I love the melody on this; it's so simple, kinda plaintive, sad. Set against the stuttering drum 'n' bass, it's perfect. One of my earliest memories of Squarepusher, and an enduring one.

9. Fixit Girl by Chris Morris.
From Blue Jam, this is seriously f***ked up. A man hires a four year old girl to dispose of the body of a man he's just killed. It's going to be a long night...

10. Don't Do Drugs by Danger Mouse & Jemini.
DM's choice of samples (a crackling 1940's dancehall, for example) and beats are inspired and Jemini's spit sits perfectly on the man's rhythm as he extols the virtues of narcotic substances and his willingness to share these virtues with anyone who's interested. And can pay.
Wytukaze
Reminds me, must get some Mogwai..

7. System Of A Down - Pictures
8. Foo Fighters - Come Back [Second appearance, same album]
9. Def Leppard - Photograph
10. Fun Lovin' Criminals - Scooby Snacks

You're not wrong, buddy. 'Holy Bible' remains a classic - shame they tanked big-time shortly after... ;_;

Kicking it up random-style:

1. 'Touch Sensitive' - The Fall
2. 'Be My Enemy' - The Departure
3. 'I Remember You' - The Ramones
4. 'Joe's Head' - Kings Of Leon
5. 'Get Your Crayons Out!' - Preston School Of Industry
6. 'My Own Gauge' - 3 Colours Red
7. 'Babysize' - Scheer
8. 'Wish You Were Dead' - Scheer
9. 'Sweet Spots' - Fiery Furnaces
10. 'Hotel Yorba' - The White Stripes

I'm happy with that. Especially the Scheer double-header - I have almost all of their back catalogue on my 'puter, including B sides. I wuv them so...

2) Kasabian - Club Foot
3) Nine Inch Nails - No, You Don't
4) Something Corporate - Hurricane (Weather Patterns)
5) Cooper Temple Clause - Who Needs Enemies
6) A Perfect Circle - Renholdër
7) Saves the Day - Nightingale
8) Tool - Pushit
9) Jimmy Eat World - Just Watch the Fireworks
10) Saves the Day - See You

*bump*

This is such a good thread, it deserves bumping. Plus (and perhaps more importantly) I have spent the last god-knows-how-many hours/days/weeks ripping every CD I own to mp3. And then I got myself an iPod and spent further time transferring it all over.

So, with almost 11 days of music ripped, I am fairly confident I have all of my CD collection as mp3 (although I am sure I'll find ones I haven't done yet, hidden in my car). Thus, I now feel that my addition to this thread will be as good as it can be.

I have used iTunes for this random playlist, and I will remind you that I have included everything I own (which therefore also includes any 'novelty' CDs that friends/relatives have bought me... hopefully these won't come up).

So... time for my random Top 10. The percentage figure after the artist shows what percentage of my total tracks are by this artist (i.e. Queen tracks make up 1.455% of the tracks I own):

1) Headlong - by Queen - 1.455%
I like Queen, and I own the three greatest hits albums. I don't really know this particular song though.

2) We Came To Dance - by Ultravox - 0.587%
I have one Ultravox album, which is a Greatest Hits album. Their tracks also appear on various compilation albums I own. 'Vienna' is clearly a classic song, that was robbed of its rightful place at #1 several years ago. As for this song, it's alright, but not a favourite.

3)Disco Nights (Rock Freak) - by GQ - 0.027%
The only song I have by this artist (who I've never heard of), and is from a compilation album of 80's disco tracks. Fairly meaningless song to me.

4)Play Dead - by Bjork with David Arnold - 0.027%
Again, from a compilation album. This is a song that has been played several million times on television in adverts and cheap television programmes. This song wouldn't normally get much play by me.

5)Spark - Tori Amos - 3.806%
I own more tracks by Tori than any other artist. This song is pretty good, and is from the album 'From The Choirgirl Hotel', which was the new album when I went to see her in concert for the first time. I'm happy to see Tori in this list.

6)Solid - Ashford & Simpson - 0.083%
Not a particularly good song. Relevant to me only in that it is from the 80's, which much of my music collection is from.

7)Everybody Hurts - REM - 1.315%
The 7th most common artist in my collection. I am not a massive REM fan, but I do like most of their music - namely their more recognised singles. A few years back, I went through a period when all I ever listened to was this song. Looking back, I had nothing to worry about at all, but I regularly felt as though I was "depressed". Turns out that this was just me being a teenager, and thinking that certain relationships were far more meaningful than they actually were. Needless to say, it hasn't spoilt my enjoyment of this song, nor REM.

8)Mixed Up World - Sophie Ellis-Bextor - 0.419%
*cough* Perhaps the artist in this list which I should be most embarrased about. This is just sheer, cheesy pop. And I know several trillion people that would happily see this young lady six feet under. This song isn't great, but there are some songs she's done that I actually quite like. Don't judge me! I see you... with your condescending eyes!

9)More Than A Feeling - Boston - 0.055%
I was just about to write, "I don't know this song". But I do actually, now that it has hit the chorus. Quite a nice song. Not much more to say about it.

10)I Am A Rock - Simon & Garfunkel - 0.559% (as a duo)
Not my favourite S&G song, but I do like a lot of their music. I also own Paul Simon's solo album, 'Graceland' - which, although I don't listen to that much anymore, I still really rather like.

So, all in all, not an awful representation of what I own or what I listen to.

1) Skyclad - Catherine At The Wheel
Folk and Metal have never fitted together so well.

2) Matthew Good Band - Song For The Girl
The reason Canada exists in my opinion, Matthew Good Band was definatly the best thing to appear from there second only to milk in bags.

3) Mindless Self Indulgence - Daddy
How can you not like are dancey-punk bands on crack aimed at insulting everyone on the planet?

4) A Perfect Circle - Lullaby
Only in the collection because every Tool fan must have some APC.

My penis grows and extra inch every time I listen to these guys.

elphaba2
Hooray for the third time I've posted in this thread.

1) Pavement- Range Life
I've just recently started getting into Pavement, and quite like this song.

2) Tool- Schism
As the first Tool song I ever heard, Schism will always hold a special place in my heart. This does not apply to every bassist who spends ages playing that bass line over and over again, however.

3)Phish- Chalk Dust Torture
A lovely, Phish-y sort of song, and probably in my top 20 Phish or so. A song that will constantly make you wonder exactly how much a flagon of rice costs.

4)Foo Fighters- Lonely As You
My absolute favoritest song by the Foos yet. The harmony always makes me shiver.

5) Incubus- Drive
A bit played out, but one of my first Incubus songs, so as due I will never ever get it out of my head.

6) Sublime- Pool Shark
This song is terrible. I'm skipping it and re-doing number 6

6) the Rolling Stones- Sympathy for the Devil
I've never actually listened to this song all the way through.
(verdict: kind of repetitive, but OK)

7)the Sex Pistols- This is Not A Love Song
Noisy and rather pointless. Not a sex pistols song I listen to often.

8)Radiohead- In Limbo
This is the only Kid A song I don't know the lyrics to, or even the general melody. I don't know why; it's a wonderful song.

(after a moment or two)
Dear god the ending is creepy.

9) Jefferson Starship- Jane
Delightful. I love this band very much.

10) Cake- Satan is my Motor
Yum.

Thanks Hobbes, now I'm going to be replying to this thread far more than is necessary until it dies again...

All my music put into winamp, randomised and set to play on Random...

Foo Fighters - The One
I love the video, love Orange County but I don't listen to this as much as I used to.

The Starting Line - This Ride
I like the Starting Line, this is probably not something I should admit to but I'll happily listen to them if they pop up in my playlist but I don't really go out of my way to listen.

Feeder - Comfort in Sound
I love feeder, I've seen them live twice (although both times were at festivals) and they are awesome... Swim is my favourite album but I will happily listen to any of them, not heard much of the latest album though.

Feeder - Helium
I suppose I do have alot of feeder on my computer... hmm

The Lightning Seed - Lucky You
Awesome song... nobody can be sad when listening to this song!

Chevelle - Don't Fake This
I need them to come to England so I can see them live!!!

A Perfect Circle - Weak and Powerless
I like APC, I like Tool but I liked them individually before I realised that they both had Maynard (swoon)
I did actually skip Video Killed the Radio Star to get to this but that's because it was only a 30 second version of it... I have about 8 >_>

Adam Green - Choke on a Cock
My friend sent me Adam Greens latest album and I like it but I wouldn't listen to it with my parents around!

JJ72 - Serpent Sky
I love JJ72 and I got to see them at Download this year and they were awesome!!

Feeder - World Asleep
More feeder >_<

Powerman 5000 - The End is Over
No comment <_>

Nine Days - Absolutely (story of a girl)
I love this song... never heard anything else by nine days but I have adored this song for years

Tool - Pushit
I like Tool happy.gif

That's probably more than 10 so ooops.

No problem, happy to be of service.

Because iTunes is a pain-in-the-donkey, I have again loaded all my mp3s into WinAmp (man, it took its time!), and used its random function to provide the following 10:

1. The Simpsons - Homers Barbershop Quartet (Medley)
From a Simpsons compilation CD featuring songs from the show. It is good, only for sheer novelty factor. # Baby on board... #

2. Spandau Ballet - True
This song features six times in my CD collection - all on compilation albums. Recently covered/remixed/sampled/somethinged by some artist-or-other. Despite how truly cheesy this song now is, I have to admit to liking it... and makes me wish I had been old enough in the 80s to have been smooching at school discos to this biggrin.gif

3. Space - Now She's Gone
I do not know this song at all. It's a B-Side to 'Ballad of Tom Jones', a single which I believe my sister bought for me. I don't know anything else by this band.

4. Special AKA - Free Nelson Mandela
Obviously of political significance, but I don't know the song at all. From a 'Greatest Hits of the 80s' compilation.

5. Steve Arrington - Dancing In The Key Of Life (LP Version)
From an 80's disco greatest hits album. The song's title is familiar, but the song itself is fairly new to me. It's surprising just how many songs in my CD collection I don't actually know.

6. Genesis - I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)
From a Genesis greatest hits album. This is a strange shop, that doesn't really sound particularly 'Genesis' at all - with stupid spoken parts. Sounds best sung by a group of drunks... # I knoooow what i liiiike, and i liiiike what i knoooow #

7. Eurythmics - You Have Placed A Chill In My Heart
I have two versions of this song. One is the above, the other is Annie Lennox performing it solo, live. It's a good song that, melody-wise, sounds reasonably upbeat, but lyrically sombre. Good video too.

8. Prince - Purple Rain
From 'The Very Best Of...' CD. I don't really like Prince's speech parts in any of his songs, so it affects my enjoyment of this song. However, the sung parts in this are really quite good. And I think this is actually a really good song, and I was only thinking the other night how it would sound so much better if the spoken parts were also sung.

9. Jessica Simpson - Did YOu Ever Love Somebody
The evils of compilation and/or soundtrack albums.... NO FURTHER COMMENT.

10. Genesis - Jesus He Knows Me
Perhaps my favourite Genesis song. It's fun and amusing. I like it. A song that featured regularly when I was about 8 or 9, because it was on a 'Now' compilation that my neighbour owned which we also listened to together. I think that is probably why I like it.

So... Genesis twice, huh? And they only sing 0.4691% of the tracks I own. I wouldn't say that the above tracks feature particularly regularly in my own chosen playings. Having said that, though, I probably would choose to listen to tracks #10, #8, #7, #2 and perhaps #1 for a laugh. biggrin.gif
