Is anyone here a Douglas Adams fan? i've read the entire Hitchhiker's Series, the 2 Dirk Gently books, and the Salmon of Doubt

FUN FACT: He died on my 11th B-day
CheeseMoose
Yes I admit, I am a Douglas Adams fanboy
Fish Head
im planning to get the meaning of liff and the deeper meaning of liff

I've read the first four hitchhiker books, but I can't find the fifth, 'Mostly Harmless', anywhere...

I also wanted the Meaning of Liff and the Deeper Meaning of Liff but the only time I've seen them in shop was when I was broke... sad.gif

But anyway, did you know they're making a hitchhiker movie? It would have been cool if Douglas Adams had made it like he said that he would, and it probably would have been better, but I think it's just gonna be crap seeing as he isn't making it...

Ah well. I always have an eye open for Adams' books and if I see them it's more than likely that I'll buy them.

I'm also after the HHGTHG video game...

Also find and read "Last chance to see" as it's an awesome book.

*waiting very impatiently for the movie version of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy to be in theaters*

The trailer looks stunning, though. Martin Freeman as Arthur, Alan Rickman voicing Marvin, Bill Nighy as Slartibartfast, interesting choice of Mos Def as Ford. Hammer & Tongs directing, and I believe Adams was co-writing the screenplay before he died.

To be honest, I think it stood more chance of being crap if Adams hadn't died and had lots of input; the first two books were good, but the rest were toss.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy trailer

I've read all five of the books along with a Dirk Gently one which I cba to remember its title. Oh boy oh boy oh boy! I'm so excited about the Hitchhiker's Guide coming to film! It looks so good, doesn't it?
moop
I've read the first 4 books and continue to fail to find the others.

The movie trailer does indeed look pretty cool, though I have some issues with it (like how they dealt with the whole 2 heads thing >_>)

It might be worth noting that the meaning of liff and (probably) the deeper meaning of liff as well aren't actual books in the sense of HHGTTG or Dirk Gently, as they're not actually a story. Certainly amusing, but no novels are they. Personally I'm skeptical about all fims created from books, but I'll probably end up seeing the film anyway.

While it is true that Meaning of Liff etc weren't stories they are so funny it doesn't matter. And I need them. My collection thus far only includes all the HHGTTG books, 1 Dirk Gently, Last Chance to See and The Salmon of Doubt
Fish Head
My collection consists of The More Than Complete Hitchhiker's Guide (which is the first four books and Young Zaphod Plays It Safe),
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, and
The Long Dark Tea Time Of The Soul

I'm a little surprised you haven't tried ebay (listing)

As I understand it, Mostly Harmless isn't meant to be a very good book. I don't even think Adams was too fond of it. Might be something to consider before spending too much in an auction.
Apollyon
Mostly Harmless... which one was that? I also got the More than Complete HHGTTG set, so I have a bit of trouble distinguishing between them. I didn't really think any of the books were that bad though.

Oh, and the trailer for the movie looks ok and action packed, but i dont think it will even come close to the books
uuu
I always thought they would be better movies than books (It's the truth)
Greeneyes
Mostly harmless is the fifth book in the trilogy.
Fish Head
i found mostly harmless to be a good to be a good book, but it was a bit more grim than the others. however, i did like the constantly robot

uuu, I don't think it'd be possible for the movie (as good as I hope!) to be as good as the book. So much of the story and humor come from the narrator and what description that visuals can't really do it justice.

That said, I'm a bit of a fanatic - I'm actually doing my English research paper on 'The Guide!

I guess that when I read them it seemed like the description was a lot uninspiring, with a lot of idiosyncratic and probably shortened description (he seems exasperated by the process and effort of trying to describe these things, to make the circumstance into a compelling one) though I agree with you a lot of the sort of sad cynical/anti-cynical elementality of the narration may be lost and this does give the work character, I guess I just feel a lot of the absurd character of the books will come out better in a movie, it seemed all visual (though it has been many years since I have read those books). In my imaginings of it as a movie I sort of imagined a deft director or writer getting around the difficulty with the narration somehow I don't know, It is a very unpopular opinion, and I do not expect people to agree, and as it turns there is a movie of it and it may well turn out to be bad, or anything, so anyway...

There is a Dr. Who episode floating around the net by Douglas Addams which is a fairly amusing watch. Sharda? Shardak? I think someone did it in flash animation.

I always think of Mostly Harmless as the "die Arthur Dent, die!" book of the series.
