I saw There Will Be Blood a couple days back.

Sorry. Pretty sure I'm not the only person who cringed at that, though.

It is another film day for me today, and I am going to see The Forbidden Kingdom because who can resist Jackie Chan and Jet Li together at last, and Journey To The Centre Of The Earth because who can resist 3D glasses? I am expecting both of them to look good enough that any problems with plot, dialogue, acting etc. won't bother me.
Izzy
Ninja Warrior on TV for a good portion of yesterday. Awesome show, not meant to be funny, but it was.

^ SO good. Have you watched Takeshi's Castle too? Althoiugh Ninja Warrior is like... the upgraded version of it.

Not yet, but I'll look into it. Well, if there's anything on Youtube.

Uh, there some game show running in the background. Tic Tac Toe or something? Boring.
Industrial Kybosh
Takeshi's Castle is pure liquid win. Top crazy.
Izzy
Takeshi's Castle was pretty cool. The rock avalanche was funny. It was like "What happens if they get hit." "Oh.."

And then we watched like an hour of Fred. ..Headache.
I_am_the_best
Well I just finished watching some Taiwanese drama which was quite fun and addictive. Sadly it finished with him scooping poo from her shoe. Yum yum.
Izzy
Just finished Yeah Right. I never knew Owen Wilson could skate! He wasn't all that great, but still.
Novander
omgomgomgstfuwalleisawesome.

For absolute serious, Wall-E is less a film, more a piece of art. And I'm not just trying to find interesting way to say it's good; don't let the pretty and the cute fool you - this is less a film for children than any previous Pixar film. The wonderful, wonderful, wonderful opening sequence with Wall-E alone on Earth is quite slow and could bore small children who won't be captivated by the sheer awesome that is being presented to them. Forty minutes before there's any dialogue and oh, oh guys, I just want to go see it again right now. So pretty.

The staff-only showing was the high definition digital copy, which is pretty times a thousand, but we won't actually be showing that to the general public for another week at least. Maybe not at all if we get a digital copy of The Dark Knight, which comes out next week. Basically I am saying it is nights like this when I love my job.
Izzy
Stepbrothers , which was alright. It had its funny bits, but wasn't that great. The guy in front of us was totally high though, so it was really funny throwing pop corn at him and stuff, and watching him laugh at /everything/.

Also the first half hour or so of The Dark Night. It seemed really good, sucked that we had to leave.
Izzy
21, which was awesome. We rented the Kite Runner too, but I haven't watched it yet.
Daria
Dark Knight, which was pretty good. A bit more camp than Batman Begins, and I would have liked to have actually seen people getting their faces slit by the joker (who, by the way, was played brilliantly) but I guess that's why it was a 12A.
Novander
The new X-Files film, I Want To Believe is a bit... well, pants really. It's not rubbish. It's at best a reasonably good episode; nothing more. No metaplot to speak of, but clearly meant for hardcore x-files fans. It all just seemed a little too small for the big screen.
Izzy
The Kite Runner was pretty good. Also, man was I surprised when this question came up on a quiz. Thank you 21.

A game-show host has placed a car behind one of three doors. There is a goat behind each of the other doors. "First you point toward a door," he says. "Then I'll open one of the other doors to reveal a goat. After I've shown you the goat, you make your final choice whether to stick with your initial choice of doors, or to switch to the remaining door. You win whatever is behind the door." You begin by pointing to door number 1. The host shows you that door number 3 has a goat. What should you do (assuming you want the best odds of winning the car)?

Pineapple Express was pretty good. Actiony, funny, yeah, I liked it.
vicrawr
I went to the theater to watch Pineapple Express the day after it came out. I'm still not quite sure how I feel about it. On the whole it was a good movie that blended action and comedy together well. Don't go watch it if you're expecting intellectual stimulation. But I'm sure you already knew that. I think the last scene in the movie was one of the better parts. Surprisingly enough, one of the secondary characters was my favorite.

Thug liiife!

I took the family to see the new Mummy film at the weekend. I don't recall the full title, something about dragons and tombs and some such. The reason for the failure to recall the title is because it's a bit of a rubbish film, to be honest.

The first hint of rubbishness is when you discover Rachel Weisz isn't playing Eve. The poor line her replacement says during her first scene (a book reading) where we see she isn't Rachel, uttering the line "No, that was a completely different woman", kind of sets the tone. Her whole part is really, really wrong; she's changed from the hard-headed, emotionally stunted and clumsy but ultimately useful Egyptologist I found so endearing, into a mushy, sentimental sort who comes off as a bit unnecessary to the story. So wrong that I could never get away from it. If a film doesn't drag you away from such details, then you end up being absorbed by it. And this film never distracted you from it at all.

Brendan Fraser played it like he wasn't that bothered. John Hannah wasn't in it enough (and I always liked his comic relief in the previous Mummy films). The guy who played Alex was okay, albeit looked a bit too old to be Rick and Evie's son. Jet Li was good, though, and the special effects were very impressive.

But the most disappointing aspect is that the film spends the first 15-20 minutes of itself explaining the back story to the soon-to-ensue events and then does nothing about a plot whatsoever! This could've been so much more interesting, but instead turned into a rather rushed affair in terms of dealing with the Mummy itself, intermingled with meandering and somewhat pointless mush surrounding the various relationships, mainly between father and son.

And that's not mentioning all the clichéd action sequences and plot points, such that there were any.

Overall, a very disappointing film.
Eli
I saw Swing Vote last sunday. I didn't really catch my attention and I ended up paying more attention to why the seats were so sticky and covered in brown stains. Not really my kinda movie I guess.
Yannick
Crazy Eights or something like that. Only really started paying attention to it when Eli put the volume on like 80. Which was after he put blankets on the windows to make it really dark. And fell on me. So, half-way through the movie.

Then we started realizing how scary it was. Well, I did. Eli kept rewinding to the freaky parts.

Alright movie. I had to leave four minutes before it ended. Four minutes. sad.gif

I saw Hellboy II at the weekend and it was awesome! Loads better than the first (and I saw them both for the first time in the last two weeks so have a good basis for comparison) and just generally much more enjoyable!

I also watched Finding Neverland yesterday and it never fails to make me cry, if you haven't seen it then you're missing out!

A week ago I saw You Don't Mess With the Zohan but the less we talk about that the better, balanced it out with a second viewing of The Dark Knight which I enjoyed even more the second time and it actually seemed to go quicker!!
leopold
Yeah... I went to see Zohan last weekend. I was a bit disappointed in it, to be honest. Yeah, it was funny in parts, but nothing really laugh out loud. And a bit too ridiculous in places. And sometimes very cringeworthy.

The absolute funniest bit in the film, for me, was when the evil boss type (whose name I can't be arsed to remember) was in a meeting with his evil corporate honchos, and one of the honchos says something about good haircuts, and then pulls this really bizarre face. Which was funny enough, but the really funny part was seeing my wife in stitches at it. Yeah, so my wife is funnier than the film I paid to see.

I don't seem to be having much luck at the flicks lately. Perhaps it's all a Hollywood move to prevent pirates - make the films so bad you don't even want to download them!

I'm a vampire fan, I just watched "True Blood" on HBO...atleast I think it was called true blood, it's 2:00am so forgive me. But it's actually really awesome, the thought of vampires "coming out of the coffin" to the general non vampiric public is a cool idea, highly recommend.
Mata
Do you mean Blood Ties? If you like that then try Moonlight. It's a similar kind of thing, but by the end of the season you'll think it's lots better!

[....]Jet Li was good

Tomb of the Dragon King. I'd heard similarly poor things about it. I love the first of the recent The Mummy remakes, and the second one has a good ending (which can do a lot for a film - see Terminator 3), but this one sounded like a limp bet from the beginning. It's good to hear that Jet Li has maintained some composure through it: he's great. Not a great actor, but a brilliant performer, and as the world's biggest star it would be a shame if he was as bad as the rest of the movie.

I watched Teeth again this weekend. It's as brilliant as the first time biggrin.gif If you liked Ginger Snaps then you'll love it. The lead actress is utterly wonderful in the role. She's really delightful to watch as the story twists around her.
Aislinn Faye
I think it might have been Blood Ties, it had Rogue from x-men in it. What sucks is that it's on HBO and they're doing that promo thing where they let you have all movie channels for a week or so to pull you in...and sadly I'm hooked.
vicrawr
I've really gotten addicted to Skins lately. And I've been watching the Graham Norton Show for a bit, too.

Thank you BBCA.

Watched [rec] last night. Still waiting for my heart to slow to normal rate.
Mata
I liked Rec, but it didn't scare me as much as I was expecting. I think I'd just read too many reviews and was expecting The Third Man of horror films. 'Twas very good, just not the life-changingly awesomeness I anticipated.

I watched Doomsday last week. It's a British film that's a mix between 28 Days Later, Mad Max, and a dash of Trainspotting. Unfortunately, it turns out that the result is a bit of a mess. It's enjoyable enough, just about, but I wouldn't go out of your way to see it. It really could have done with a decent script editor and dropping ten minutes on the cutting room floor.
Yannick
I saw Ghost Town the other day. It was pretty funny. I also saw Pathology, which we rented, it was okay.
Mata
Heroes season 3! Yay! Season 2 was a bit patchy, so hopefully they'll get back to the brilliance of season 1 this time.

I've just started on Dexter season 2, which looks like it might be a lot more grim than season 1. I've only seen the first episode, but it rather looks like everything is going to go wrong and he'lll be tempted to the dark side... The dark side of serial killing. Which looks totally different from the light side of serial killing. Yup.
Industrial Kybosh
I really enjoyed the first series of Dexter, so I'm rather tempted by the second one myself. And woo! Heroes!
CrazyFooIAintGettinOnNoPlane
I'm watching the latest season of heroes as well. It still doesn't seem as good as season 1 was but it's not so bad I'll stop watching. Dexter is awesome. Also I'm slowly working my way through House which is the best show ever ever ever and I love it. I'm up to the 3rd season now.

Thanks to 4oD I've spent the last few days watching almost every episode of Peep Show (one of the series didn't have a button to stream the episodes for some reason) which made me lol on several occasions biggrin.gif I'm actually pretty impressed with all the shows channel 4 lets you watch for free - it just sucks that they force you to use windows, internet explorer and their own awful software in order to do so.

I agree..the movie wasn't a total disaster, but the story seemed kinda played out. Recently most of the films (not sure how it is over there) in the U.S that are "scary" involve a disease and zombies. I thought it to kinda be a poor knock-off of the Resident Evil Movies. (Both movies: virus that turns people into zombies..People/Police(?) sent in to destroy the infected and find a cure for the infection..) It could've been much better, but it could slide for passable.

I'd be inclined to disagree. Perhaps it's just because I'm older and have been tainted by the likes of Monty Python, or maybe it's just a different sense of humour, but I found Shallow Hal to be, well, shallow. The cast made a decent fist of it, but it was obviously a vehicle for Jack Black. The plot was a bit weak, the morality of the basic premise was a bit forced, the humour was obvious and the end was guessable from the opening scene. It was funny in parts, just not laugh out loud. Mind, at least we have recorded evidence here that Gwyneth Paltrow knows how to smile biggrin.gif

Last night I watched "The Longest Yard" - the remake, not the original. This was a good film with some very funny parts and some darker moments. I've not seen the original, with Burt Reynolds as the lead (he's in the remake as well, just not as the lead role), but I've seen the Brit Flick remake, "Mean Machine", which is ostensibly the same film but with football (soccer) as the sporting theme and a much harder cast comprising the same faces that Guy Ritchie usually rolls out. It's a much gritter film, which should be expected given who's directing it, and this makes the humour all the funnier. There's the added element that Vinnie Jones used to be a football player and was a notoriously hard bastard on the pitch.
Yannick
^ Dude it was funny. But I'm kind of lame at thinking most things Jack Black are funny. (School of Rock does not suck, okay?)

Watched Saw 5 Friday night. Nothing too different from the other ones. Worth it because of the first scene, but they killed off my favorite guy second.

Going to see Zack and Miri Make A Porno on Wednesday.

I'm inclined to agree. School of Rock was really good. I like Tenacious D (although I've not seen "Pick of Destiny" yet) and I even liked him in "King Kong". I just thought Shallow Hal was a bit weak.

The other night I watched the documentary "Thrilla in Manila", which is about the landmark boxing match between Mohammed Ali and Joe Fraser. I'm not normally a boxing fan, but this was fascinating. The basic premise is that Ali had lost his boxing licence for not fighting in Vietnam, and Joe Fraser wanted him to get his licence back so they could fight. Joe, at the time, was heavyweight champion, but never got due credit because he never fought Ali. The docu went through all the events leading up to their massive showcase fight in Manila. Apparently, Fraser went through hoops to defend Ali, giving him money and lobbying to get his licence back. And then Ali turns round and calls Fraser "Gorilla" and "Uncle Tom" prior to the fight. What a pleasant chap. NOT!
Yannick
The Pick of Destiny was awwwesome! We watched it at my cousin's house during the summer or Christmas or something (we weren't at school, I know that much).

I'm watching the news. Yay weather. It's colder again!
Yannick
Quantum of Solace is so boring. There was a part in the middle that was decent, but the rest of it sucked completely. I didn't stay to see the ending.

Zack and Miri Makes a Porno is the best romantic comedy I have ever seen. I don't think any film has ever made me LOL more.
leopold
It's a little known fact that my music server doubles up as a video library, upon which is contained a modest number of movies I intend to watch at some point in my life. Yes, modest. I've got one whole terabyte of storage space and it's 75% unused currently.

Anyway, last Saturday we decided to watch one of said films: "Forgetting Sarah Marshall". A number of things struck me about this film. Firstly, I thought there were one too many "sausage shots" of Jason Segel. Also, his character wasn't especially funny apart from his Dracula musical. The plot was wafer thin and the outcome was bleeding obvious from the moment I saw him talking to Mila Kunis. No, seriously. As soon as they spoke, I thought to myself "He's going to shag her, then get dumped because of some incident with his ex, and then get back together again under spurious circumstances." The next thing I noticed is that Mila Kunis provides the voice of Meg in "Family Guy" (or at least she does in the later series). It was fully 25 minutes before I twigged where I'd heard her voice before and it was only during one scene I thought "Aha! She's Meg!" And then I realised how bloody annoying her voice is, and despite being quite cute, I'd want to give her a laryngectomy. And I noticed was that Russell Brand, despite suggestions he was a good actor, wasn't really acting at all. No, he was just being his usual odd self.

Overall, the film was okay, but it needed to be a bit funnier. Seriously, it was begging for it.

Of no interest whatsoever, Jason Segel's character in "How I Met Your Mother" is called Marshall. I don't think his character in that is especially funny either. None of them are. Well, except Barney.
Industrial Kybosh
Interestingly, given the weight of interest given to Jack Black recently in this here thread, I watched 'Be Kind Rewind' last night. Whilst it didn't blow me away, I thought it was a very sweet film, and thoroughly enjoyable. The Ghostbusters sequence did threaten to cripple me with mirth, however.
Yannick
Red vs. Blue is the most brilliant thing ever. I started watching it because I joined a game of Mafia based on it and there will be trivia, but now I'm hooked.
Hobbes
I just watched the first half of Extras, series 2. I like the show, even though I never "laugh out loud" at much of it. But one of the episodes actually got a vocal reaction from me, so I'm enjoying it even more now biggrin.gif
snooodlysnoosnoosnoodle
Has anyone else been watching Dollhouse?

Been trying to persuade Mr Stubborn Pants that he shouldn't judge things by the first 20 mins of the pilot.

The second ep thoroughly creeped me out, Matt Keeslar can be really creepy!

On the Matt Keeslat note - anyone who hasn't seen The Middleman (stupid ABC with their stupid cancelling the best things and letting the crap go on forever) should watch it RIGHT NOW!!
Hobbes
Oh, and I watched The Shawshank Redemption last night.

I cannot believe that I have been avoiding that film for so long. It was superb! I don't know what I THOUGHT it was about, because it exceeded all expectations.

Also saw Gran Torino at the cinema last week. Wasn't sure about it as I walked in, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Novander
I've been watching Dollhouse. It's okay, and would probably be good except that this is a Joss Whedon production and thus I was expecting a lot more wit from it.

I have still been watching lots of films at the cinema. Here is a rough summary of the year so far: Benjamin Button is amazingly awesome. Slumdog Millionaire is highly over-rated. Push is this year's Jumper. Milk made me wish I was gay. The Wrestler made me glad I'm not a wrestler. The Spirit confused me because even when Samuel L Jackson was on screen I was not enjoying it. Underworld 3 proved that yes, Rhona Mitra is indeed a poor man's Kate Beckinsale. Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist is lovely. Sex Drive proved you don't have to be original to be funny. Doubt proved Amy Adams is the loveliest person ever. Three hours later, Benjamin Button is still amazingly awesome, only this time I am crying.
Smiler
I'm intrigued about Dollhouse, excited but not sure if it'll live up to expectation once I get me a few episodes.

It might be a bit late seeing as the last episode was on on Sunday but boy I cannot recommend Being Human enough! It's been a fantastic series and I'm really really really hopuing for another series. It's so well written and far less an outright comedy than I thought it was going to be, far more a drama with some hilarious laugh out loud moments. The writing is everything you'd want from a high end show and while the budget was pretty low they've used it on some quality pieces and it doesn't really show at all. I'd expect it do go down well in the States if the reaction of a couple of friends over there is anything to go by. It's just finished a run on BBC3 so I don't know if it'll hit normal channels but I'd say hunt it down; come on, a werewolf, vampire and ghost sharing a flat in Bristol! It's got classic written all over it!

Only bug... werewolfs on screen. Why is that far to often they look a little pants on the full reveal, the transformations and half-way stages always look awesome but something just doesn't sit right in most screen shots... why? (Being Human isn't actually too bad having said that)
