Which films are you looking forward to right now?

I just saw the latest trailer for MirrorMask. I am super-excited about this film. It's written by Neil Gaiman (!) and directed by Dave McKean (!!!) and basically my mind can't fathom a world where that wouldn't be awesome.
PsychWardMike
Can't really say I'm looking forward to anything in particular. Maybe X Men 3 and Batman Begins, but apart from that I've not seen anything that really spanks my fancy.

Gotta mention the Devil May Cry Movie, though.
Mata
MirrorMask is not only written by two very cool people, but is being produced by the Jim Henson company. Gaiman, McKean, and Brian Henson all at once. I'm in heaven.

I'm looking forward to seeing Batman Returns later this week. I've heard good things so far.

Ultraviolet should be out this year. It's the next film by Kurt Wimmer, the director of Equilibrium. Test audiences said that they couldn't understand the plot (which may actually bode well for it...) and that the action is probably the best ever filmed. It should be interesting if nothing else.

Aeon Flux has finally been made into a film and that should be out later this year. I'm pretty wary of that. I love the cartoons.

I was watchig the MTV movie awards the other day and A dukes of HAzard film seemed to be mentioned. Anyone heard anything. OH and Charlie and the chocolate factory of course!

Yup.

Millions of twenty and thirty-something men's childhood memories are going to be utterly defiled as 80's pin up Daisy Duke is being played by MTV's favourite clueless clotheshorse, Jessica Simpson.
Mata
It's amazing that people can make careers these days out of being very, very stupid. I thought the film had already come and gone actually... Or maybe that was just wishful thinking. It feels like they've been plugging it for years, but that could just be the media's reaction to denim hotpants.

Anyone know the name of the new Jet Li film? The plot will probably be rubbish, but I do love the way he fights!

Which reminds me: Ong Bak. It's a Thai martial arts film which apparently has some astonishing fights in it. They made it look real... by actually hitting eachother. No wires, no tricks. Empire were raving about it, and all other reviews I've seen say it's very good.
PsychWardMike
Does Mata mean Batman Begins or is Great Britain realy that behind?
Ashbless
There's a rumour that Josh Whedan (sp?) of Buffy the Vampire fame has produced a movie called Serenity based on his Firefly TV series. I'd part with few hundred pennies to see that.

Also looking forward to Fantastic 4 for campy fun, something called The Island that looks good (appears to have nods towards Matrix, Logan's Run and clones) but may be total rubbish and I'm keen to see what's been done to War of the Worlds. (Tom Cruise and Steven Spielburg collaborate on this one)

More than a rumour...
LoLo
I'm like others and looking forward to Batman Begins (which I'm going to take myself to see tomorrow), and X-3. I'm also really excited that they are making The Chronicles Of Narnia : The Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe into a movie again. I grew up loving those books as much if not more than LOR.
Forever Unknown
Ooohooohoooh. I'm so very excited for Serenity.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory looks extraordinarily fun also. And while Batman Begins looks really good, so far reviewers have given it little more than a 'meh'. Which is poo.
Mata
I saw Batman Begins (yes, not 'Returns' tongue.gif at Commie!) last night. 'Tis good fun, and is easily better in it's first five minutes than the entirity of the previous film, and go for ten minutes and you're better than the previous two films (and I quite liked number three).

It is a bit long: they could have chopped some of the car scenes down a bit without losing anything, but they do have some very good performances in there from the whole cast. Bale does a good job of giving some depth to the grey areas of the character, and Michael Caine plays Alfred doing a great impersonation of Michael Caine pretending to be a butler. The supporting cast is generally excellent.

The only dampner for me is that I like to see more of what's happening in a fight scene. They are carefully choreographed, and then lots gets lost in whizz-bang cinematography. The fighting style here is a lot more brutal and 'street' than the usual seen in films and I would have loved to have seen more of what was actually happening, but if you're not a fight snob then none of this will bother you!

I'd say that if you go to see it expecting an average movie then you will be very happily surprised. If you go expecting a really amazing film then you too might feel a bit 'meh'. I liked it, and Sues really enjoyed it.

A quick mention of The Island that Ashbless mentioned. The trailer looks very interesting. The plot sounds like it should have been written by Philip K Dick. Dick's novels are often quite patchy when converted into film, so it will be interesting to see if they do a good job picking out the best bits!

I want to see Steamboy. Because it's not being generally released was a heinous crime to Akira fanloons everywhere.

Tim Burton has some Nightmare-style film coming out that looked neat, art-wise. And who doesn't go warm and fuzzy for Wallace and Grommit? Honestly. Commie, I hadn't heard of the Gaiman film, but coming off the euphoria of having just bought High Price of Living today, I am mad happy to hear about it.
PsychWardMike
I dunno about the Burton flick (the title of which is something like Zombie Bride or somesuch.) While I think the cast and crew are fairly sound (Johnny Depp is one of the voices) What I saw in the preview didn't impress me too much.

There's a Devil May Cry movie coming out...

Hehe. Gaiman fanboy here. I love the Death books, I have the two regular ones and the manga. I'd love a Death movie, actually. I was watching Neverwhere yesterday (six-part TV series that Gaiman wrote, I have it on DVD) and I realised that Laura Fraser would make a brilliant Death if she were gothed up a bit.
Ashbless
Gaiman's print style books are also well worth a read. Just finished Neverwhere.

The film with Wallace and Gromit will probably lure me to the theatre if it plays in small town B.C.
I have to admit that I always think of Gene Wilder's portrayal of Willie Wonka so Depp's semi-Goth Willie Wonka isn't really drawing me to see Charlie and the chocolate factory. My current roomate is a major fan so she'll probably drag me off to see it. I have to admit I liked Mr. Depp in the Secret Window - if only for the hair style. biggrin.gif Also thought that his Jack Sparrow in Curse of the Black Pearl was brilliant.
PsychWardMike
Does anyone know if Depp is lined up to do the sequel to Pirates? I rather enjoyed the first one but I probably won't see the second if he's not in it.
CommieBastard
What I hear is that Depp is going to be in the next Sin City film. Now there's one to watch.
PsychWardMike
Yeah? I could really dig that. Depp's a good actor.
PsychWardMike
Conversely to my normal philosophy, if the new King Kong movie (directed by Peter Jackson of Lord of the Rings fame for anyone who's been living under a rock for the past few years) is anything like the game, I'll be happy to see it as well.
pgrmdave
Johnny Depp is, if I remember correctly, currently working on not one, but two sequels to Pirates.

I've been looking for the miniseries ever since I read the book, but the video store nearest is fer crap. *cries* I wonder why there's been no movie for Sandman yet? Especially given the latest mania to put every comic book ever made into a movie (Fantastic 4 looks absolutely horrible). Not that I want to see it maimed on screen, mind, but if it were well done (thankfully it's Gaiman, and he'd doubtlessly write it), a Death movie would be awful swifty.
CommieBastard
The DVD of Neverwhere isn't common by any means - oddly enough it's not in any shops in the UK. I bought it in the huge HMV in Toronto. Try looking for it online.
Mata
Try here smile.gif

On the inevitable side of things, I enjoyed Spiderman 2, so I'm interested to see the next one. I've not bothered to look to see if it's planned: I think it's a foregone conclusion.

I am almost entirely sure that Amazon has one piece of information wrong:

QUOTE
Encoding: Region 1 (U.S. and Canada only. This DVD will probably NOT be viewable in other countries. Read more about DVD formats.)

I have that exact DVD (like I said, bought in Canada) and it's regionless. I remember Neil Gaiman saying that online shops kept assuming that is was Region 1 when that wasn't true. I wouldn't swear to that, though...
CommieBastard
Speaking more about Gaiman-related films:

The movie of Good Omens will be directed by Terry Gilliam if it ever gets made. It has, however, been in development hell for several years now - I understand they're having trouble getting the funding together.

There is apparently going to be a movie of Death: The High Cost of Living, though I don't know anything about that yet.
Mata
Most DVD players have hacks available for them online these days anyway, so it doesn't really matter what region a film is supposed to be for. It's odd that they still bother to do region specific encoding, really.

Good Omens: I'll believe that when I see it. Then again, these things do sometimes eventually happen, Judge Dredd eventually became a film, after all its troubles.

I'm looking forward to a lot of movies coming to video not that that counts.
Apart from that I want to see Jonny depp being willy wonka assuming that one gets to this dump of a town mad.gif

Why region specific DVDs? It's an attempt to control what is seen/sold, where... Sometimes for legal reasons... doesn't matter that there are hacks available... legal types always assume that more locks are the answer, when the truth is, locks only stop the innocent, law abiding citizen...

Hitchhiker's Guide was in development hell for, what, thirty years? Enough people read Good Omens that a film would be a pretty sure investment, I reckon...
Quoth(The Raven)
I recently bought a DVD of the first season of The TV show, Greatest American Hero... one of my all time favorite Tv shows... This includes two pilot movies, one never aired, so it kinda sorta qualifies in Movies. The DVD is a bit short, as the first season was short (By American standards - only eight episodes). Some of you may remember that this was the TV show that was temporarily derailed by an attempted assasination. The title charachter's last name was Hinckley, the same as that of attempted assasin John Hinkley (Least, I think it was John...), so, when the attempt made headlines, the show was pulled for re-tooling, hence the short season...

For those unfamilier with the show, it was a Steven J. Cannell series that never really took off, having a short first and third seasons, and a full second season. It spawned a hit single for the song writing duo, Post and Carpenter, "Beleive it or not", which was the shows theme.

The premise: A conservative FBI agent and a liberal school teacher are chosen by space aliens to receive a superhero suit invested with a variety of super human powers. The school teacher is the only one the suit will work for, and he promptly loses the instruction book. His attempts to use the suit provide much of the humor of the show, as he has trouble of every kind, trying to get it to do what he wants...

Great superhero fiction, and funny, as well...

Believe it or not, I'm walking on air. I never thought I could feel so free-ee-ee

Oh, I've just heard a rumor that Greatest American Hero has been optioned for a feature movie. If so, I'm looking forward to it, and hope that they won't make too much of a hash of it... It would be nice, too, if they resisted the urge to totally recreate the series in movie form, and gave a continuity nod to the series. After all, in the series, they learn that Ralph (The teacher) wasn't the first earthling to receive a suit. The same thing could happen with a movie, the aliens giving a new duo the responsibility of saving the world, with, maybe, a cameo of William Katt and/or Robert Culp, reprising their original roles...
Mata
I'd love it if the long-planned adaptation of Neuromancer eventually got made. The option has been passed around between movie studios for the twenty years since the novel but only once even has managed to get as far as a script. It might have been ripped off now so many times that it would seem derivative, though...

Back on topic, but on a related note, the last I heard was that apparently things are progressing well with the adaptation of Pattern Recognition, William Gibson's latest novel. I am a bit nervous about any film version of Gibson's writing. The power in his stories comes from the poetic use of language in the narration and I've not seen this properly converted into the visual media.

That would be so cool. I just wanted to let you know that your post made me look into the series and once the first of the month hits my mom is buying the first 2 seasons, which means I get to watch them again (first time on dvd) without having to pay for them myself. lol Season three comes out in August apparently.

There was a good serialisation of that done by the BBC about ten years ago. It's out on DVD in the UK and the US if you're interested.

I'm rather looking forward to this film. I have no clue what it's going to be called, but I think it'll be good.

I do like that animation style. Here's to a good film adaptation of a PKD novel, eh?

Oh my goodness. That's one of the prettiest things I've seen for a long time. Blimey. I think I'll copy that style right now...
Alanity
The style's certainly improved since Waking Life.
As this is by far my favourite book of Dick's I'm a bit worried about how it's going to turn out. Linklater is an inspired choice of director and but for one small detail the casting looks perfect...I just don't want to underestimate Reeves' ability to completely ruin a good film, especially one that follows such a subtle change and division in his character.

Hmm... Not quite there, but not bad considering the lack of Hollywood budget. The addition of the rocket makes it look a bit different too...

It reminds me of The Nightmare Before Christmas, And It was made by Tim Burton, so I'm pretty sure it'll be good.
PsychWardMike
That movie must be a sequel or a prequel or something. I saw a preview for it the other day and it most definately had "What's This?" (The Song from the Christmas village) playing in the background. Added to that, the art style is very similar and... it is Tim Burton. Mayhaps this is the story of Jack Skellington?
voices_in_my_head
Under the discripion of the movie, it sounds completly different.
