Once upon a time, when the word "Funk" first came into vogue, it stood for stench, pong, or B.O....pretty much a very bad smell... and usually associated with poor hygiene... I beleive that it was also a last name as well, as in "Funk and Wagnalls' encyclopedia" (Which was an oft used inside joke, on Rowan and Martin's laugh in... as in: "Put that in your Funk and Wagnall's"). Can you imagine being Mr. or Ms. Funk?

Over time, the word evolved a meaning like: "To be under a dark cloud". A very introspective, but bad, mood.

And, of course, Funky became, "Cool, down to earth, real."

(Remember in the song THriller, when Vincent Price was talking about "the funk of fourty thousand years"? that was pretty much a pun, as you could take it either way you pleased...).

And that there is th' real jive, turkeys...

Just an example of how a negative word can be used against a group of people, who then turn it around, and make a point of pride of it... Other examples:

Queer = Gay
Bitch = In your face, audacious female
Gritty = Rough, realistic
Nerd = Mathematically and computer literate

and on and on... even the 'n word', once the worst thing a white person could call a black person, is now commonly used within the black community...

In the case above, "Funk", as in filthy and smelly, was applied to beatniks and hippies, who took it as their own, changing the meaning from 'dirty' to 'down to earth' or 'Earthy', and then finally, 'Funky' came to mean 'with it' or 'cool'...
