Why does there have to be a 'Best of' anything at all? Seriously, you can't call it between bands. If we're going purely on record sales, then you could say something like Led Zeppelin, or The Beatles. Far be it for me to say which one is better out of those two. At the end of the day, it's all a matter of personal choice. I am a massive Feeder fan, but I recognise that they're not the Best Band on the Planet, and neither, I might add, are Green Day.

If anything, this topic should have the fanboys/girls crawling out of the woodwork.
Mata
The best band in the world are unsigned at the moment and live in Cornwall. No-one has ever heard their music because they practise in a small shed in the middle of moorland, but even the area around the shed has become more fertile, blossoming with tropical flowers and a wide selection of wildlife, such is the power of their music.
PsychWardMike
I highly disagree Mata. The best band is yet unsigned and consists of a hippie, a rocker, a nerd, and a biker. They play in Andover NJ on Friday nights and are to soon start releasing albums. Their seering guitar riffs are enough to make a cyncical fat Irish man such as meself jig up somethin' fierce.
CommieBastard
The best band in the world is Rush.

Or possibly Jethro Tull.
Daria
As Little Bear said, you can't say one band is the best in the world.
What catagories are we going on here? What genre?
Perhaps the question should have been "What's your favourite band in the world?"
Then my answer would be ...

Heck, I can't even narrow that one down!

So very true.
I'm going to assume that you mean to ask what the best band ever is in our opinion. Thus, 'tis Emerald Rose. They play Celtic-American folk rock and played at the Return of the King Oscar cast party. They also live in my state, so they do plenty of local concerts. Huzzah!
PsychWardMike
Nope. The best band in the world is my previously mentioned band.

They're like called Hemp Bag Monk and stuff.
MrTeapot
I am in the best band in the world.

Were called "Naked insane screamin man and his suprisingly rather conservative bandmates".

Pwnd.
Jimmy-von-Lucidious
Me thinks this is a question with no answer but my favorite bands would be, wow no wait I think that is another question without an answer.
But perhaps music is the best thing in the world. If I didn't have music I'd spend most of my days walking in circles banging my head against concrete walls.

Geez why don't you pick a hard question next time laugh.gif

I wasn't being entirely serious. In fact, I was blatantly taking the piss.
Mata
Well, if we want a serious suggestion then it's always going to have to be The Beatles. No, not everyone likes them, but they really did completely change the nature of popular music, and before mass-media I wouldn't really describe music groups with the modern term 'band', so The Beatles win it.

It's not a very interesting result, but I figure it would be pretty hard to argue against.
syuu
Ahem. *clearly*, the best band in the world has always been and will always be the Smiths. :P

Right place, right time, little more besides.
Mata
Right place, right time, massive influence because of this, and dozens of songs that pretty much anyone who has had access to the media in the world can hum along with. There was talent there as well as luck.

I think it would be silly to say that luck plays no part in being the best band in the world. The Rolling Stones or U2 have probably got good claims for being the best bands still together, but again there's a lot of luck involved with that. Catching the zeitgeist, getting on a label, meeting the right producer at the right time, even band arguments that led to new directions, all these things make a group what they are.
CommieBastard
What exact definition of "best" are you using, Mata? I can't work it out.

PsychWardMike
I'm with little_bear on this one. I'm damn sick and tired of kids not realizing that the current media is absolute garbage save for a few distinct bands and that if nothing else, the older generation has a lot of merit. Just because it doesn't get played on MTV so you can't emulate your pathetic little life around it doesn't make it bad - hell I'd go so far to say that most current "artists" (including what you listed as your favorites) have less musicality than John Lennon did in his feces. So how about this? Be a little less uninformed and then make a coherent opinion.
elphaba2
PWM, I beg to differ. Though lots of old music is amazing and fantastic and swell, so is lots of new music. I like a whole bundle of bands currently getting MTV airplay (ex: Beck, Incubus, Modest Mouse, the Arcade Fire, Dave Matthews Band) --I could go on. Do I watch MTV? No. The difference is that often a lot of less-than-talented people get played on MTV as well (Jojo, that irritating off-key song with the "la"'s, etc) and more frequently. I don't know why, but saying that current music is garbage because a few crappy bands are overplayed is too strong by half.

also: little_bear, you need to stop making me guffaw at my computer screen. It's not healthy when done in excess.
CommieBastard
I invoke Sturgeon's Revelation: 90% of everything is crap. The difference is, the 90% of modern-day crap is in your face, whereas everyone has now comfortable forgotten the 90% of crap from yesteryear, and likes to pretend that the 10% of good stuff is actually representative of what it was like.
moop
Indeed, coupled with the fact that when being nostalgic people only tend to remember the good bits.

There's also the problem that kids will be mostly subjected to modern music (and other things) while growing up so they're far less likely to have appreciation for older music unless introduced to it by parents and friends. Having said that, I'm sure overexposure due to excessive listening by parents (or just association with embarassing parents) could lead to possibly ungrounded negative opinions.

Back on topic, I agree that the best band is probably completely unheard of. I have lots of candidates for second best band but no clear winner so I can't make a call on that either.
syuu
I really dislike new music as well. It all sounds the same! It's basically some pre-teen's livejournal post whined out by a skinny white boy who smeared on eyeliner and forgot to take his cold medicine. At least, that's most of what I'm hearing. And MTV doesn't play music anymore. It's all about spoiled rich kids that make me sick to my stomach -- at least in America it is.
Wookiee

13 & God, Patrick Wolf, Sigur Rós, The Boats, Boards Of Canada, The Arcade Fire, Sufjan Stevens, MIA, Animal Collective, Devendra Banhart, Sleater-Kinney, The Decemberists, Jamie Lidell, Jackson & His Computer Band, Strapping Young Lad, Alarm Will Sound, Annie, Wolf Parade, Iron & Wine, Super Furry Animals, Common, Kanye West, Dangermouse and MF Doom's DangerDoom project, Pelican, Jesu, Architecture In Helsinki, just as a very very small selection of the diverse and interesting acts to release music in 2005. So don't be frontin'.

Do we really need a 'best band in the world'? There's squillions of 'em. This debate is futile and very silly.
Mata
Futile and silly... Yep, that about sums it up, hence my first response to the topic.

Oh, and LT, the reason that your teacher keeps on going on about The Beatles and The Rolling Stones is that they have a proven track record of success over many decades. People like Linkin Park do not. I know I've heard Linkin Park lots of times but I can't recall a single tune by them. It doesn't necessarily mean that The Beatles or The Stones are the greatest bands ever, but on a fairly reasonable criteria I think they meaure up far better than Linkin Park. It also doesn't mean that you have to like The Beatles, personally I find quite a few of their songs fairly average, but I can recognise their influence and importance in musical history. Those are better indicators of greatness than simple matters of taste.

It may be that in forty year's time we'll all look back and laugh at how I thought The Beatles were bigger than Linkin Park, but for the moment I'll stick with my choice.

As for Kraftwork, they are indeed great, but again I suspect more people can hum a Beatles tune than a Kraftwork one. Popularity across the spectrum of society I think is probably another fair criteria. Again, The Beatles are a boring default choice, but I still think it's the most accurate one. I'd rather it were Future Sound Of London, but there we go.
CommieBastard
Actually, I don't think I can hum a single Beatles tune. But I've got the keyboard part to Das Modell in my head..

Sie ist ein Modell und sie sieht gut aus...
Jimmy-von-Lucidious
*Jimmy takes notes* Most intriguing, indeed.

Lots of biting and prodding and sticking of heads in piles of sand followed by some rather thought through responses then more sand and stuff...

Of course we can't expect preteens and young teens to have a great appreciation of older music. There are two main reasons for this; they weren't their for the music, and two, liking old music their parents like is often alienating from their peers.
They weren't their to hear the great old music, and when they do get to listen to it all they hear is this old nonsense their cheesy old parents listened to. If it's not in mainstream media it's just not cool.
I myself went through this rather narrow-minded stage as a preteen and young teen and it wasn't till I actually did music as an elective that my musical tastes started to broaden.

As for their being no good music these days, that it all just sounds the same, what an injustice! Of course if the only way you hear new music is via mainstream media it's going to sound the same, it's popular thus it gets airtime there for more bands make that music. If you want to hear something different take a little time to visit alternative media internet sites such as http://www.mp3.com.au where you will find many new unsigned bands with a unique or interesting sound.

So if you want something new that sounds good forget MTV and forget popular media and forget popular music and make a little effort and you will be pleasantly surprised and may even find a NEW band to fall in love with.

Oh and the award for the best band of all time in the entire universe goes to ... ... ... ... ... oh damn I lost my queue cards.

Not Strawberry Fields Forever? Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds? Help? Helter Skelter? Yellow Submarine? Sgt. Pepper's Lonley Hearts Club Band? Love Me Do? She Loves You? I Want to Hold Your Hand? Can't Buy Me Love? A Hard Day's Night? Ticket to Ride? Yesterday? We Can Work It Out? Eleanor Rigby? Penny Lane? All You Need Is Love?

Like I say, I'm not a Beatles fan but I know a fair bit of all those tunes, and probably loads more by them. Then again, I suspect your taste in media generally is not that of most people! Even so, I'd be surprised if you couldn't hum any of those... Or maybe this is just a reflection of your humming ability? biggrin.gif

Taste is definitely something that changes as you get older, but then maturity is one of the things that these forums are about, so it's good to people not to be too dismissive.
CommieBastard
I know almost all of those titles, but I thought some of them were by other people.

Um, I know how the chorus to Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds goes? At least, the bit where they chant the song title, is that the chorus? And I think I can hear I Want To Hold Your Hand, but I might have got it mixed up with something else.

edit: Whenever I'd heard the Beatles, I didn't hear anything that interested me at all, so I've just never bothered to listen to any of the rest of it. If I were studying the evolution of music, then, sure, I'd want to hear them, but I'm not.
