I don't think anyone who spends a serious amount of time here is entirely normal, Mata. How could anyone completely normal start some of the current popular topics? I'm certainly not normal. It seems like a boring way to be.

Ah, but does that make abnormality the norm for this site then?

If abnormality is tha norm for us on here, and abnormality is the norm of the Internet, and the Internet is global, surely abnormality is normal the world over, which therefore means we are all actually normal.

I believe I consider myself abnormal when compared to the standard level of abnormality that resides in most places. Allthough to make it more simple for myself, I often use myself as the origin point for normal. So then anyone not like me isn't normal.

No we're not. Everyone here may be abnormal, but quite a lot of the Internet if normal. There's sites for cooking and boy bands and reality TV and all the rest of the normal idiocy. The abnormality of the Internet is hidden, so the Internet is really normal overall, so the world is normal.

True, most of the visible 'net is normal. But I firmly belive that the Deep Net is exceedingly abnormal. So my point holds.

It's always tempting to say that people are stupid for accepting the status quo as the right path for them, but if they find no interest in questioning life then isn't it more sensible for them to take the path of least resistance? My life would be so much easier if I didn't feel the need to question and analyse. I could have stopped studying years ago, dedicating myself to a career of some sorts, made a decent wage and perhaps own a house rather than being less than a year and a half away from thirty and still living in rented accomodation, throwing away my money. Which is more idiotic? Following my dreams and having little at the end (but a feeling of satisfaction) or accepting the normal life and living with security?

Don't fall into the easy 'we are smart, they are stupid' trap. 'Normal' people (if there really is such a thing) have different priorities. Creating a duality between 'us' and 'them' only divides the population further, creating tension and resentment. That doesn't do anyone any favours.

I don't think normalcy exists. Anything deemed normal in society is usually powered by the media, such as a mindset, or a type of clothing, all of which changes, and even with this flimsy definition of what is and isn't normal, what you wear on the outside or your trends to appear like the rest of your peers doesn't really define who you are as a person. Since most people have views and opinions that are so different from one another's, there really is no stagnant 'norm' in society.

Therefore, normalcy is an illusion. ^_^ We're all freaks! Tra la la la la..

While I agree that normalcy is an illusion, I definitely believe that there are culutral ideologies that are mainstream, such as the nuclear family being the best environment for everyone to grow in, what is acceptable clothing to wear.

While media influences do reinforce these views they also are responsible, in my view, for the assimilation of non-mainstream ideas such as the growing acceptance of fetish-based sexuality. Media, such as advertising, and fashion is always looking for something 'edgy' so it brings in non-mainstream influences and mass-produces them. Ten years ago punk was an unusual look for teenagers and you could go weeks without seeing anyone alternative looking. Today punk/skate/metal fashion have all become mainstream.

It's a serious problem in some ways because sub-cultures don't have the time to grow into anything distinctive before they are harvested and commercialised. I think it's only when you get cultural backwaters that are left alone that you get anything really interesting happening.
