I've been hearing many mixed things about The Corpse Bride, Tim Burton's new movie. I like a lot of Burton's output, but Nightmare Before Christmas doesn't number among the ones I enjoy. I love the design, but the songs put me off completely.

I get worried about a film when people start saying things like 'this movie shouldn't be watched for the storyline'. That approach may be acceptable in a martial arts movie or a similar action genre film, but for most other types of film I consider the story to be pretty high on the list of things that are important to me. Planet of the Apes had some lovely production design and some reasonable performances but the story was boring at best and a complete mess at worst. I find it hard to become enthusiastic about films where the plot doesn't interest me.

Sometimes style can be victorious over substance. Collateral, a fairly recent action movie with Tom Cruise and Jamie Fox, has a pretty simple story which is given depth by suggesting camera work, brilliant lighting, and clever dialog setting up a very intelligent balance of positive and negative attributes between the leads (my girlfriend disagrees, but we often do over films). I'm not currently convinced that this film is going to be much more than an a reason to put up on screen lots of carefully contructed visual design ideas.

So, have you seen it? Is it worth seeing for more than the visual elements?

Whether it's a good movie or not, it'll definitely be coming to many small gothy shops on merchandise near you soon. I half suspect they made this so they can reclaim some money from the massively-bootlegged Nightmare Before Christmas market.

I loved it.

I didn't really like The Nightmare Before Christmas, there were too many songs, and none of them were really that good. The Corpse Bride had a few songs (Two or three) and, In my opinion, a cute story line, And the sense of humor in it wasn't quite as morbid as it was in The Nightmare Before Christmas.

I havent seen it, have been meaning to see it, but have yet to find a ride. Not to mention I'm broke due to loosing my wallet.... I think I might go to the theatres instead of homecoming next week.... But by then you'll most likely alraedy have lots of input on the movie tongue.gif

Thats mostly why I'm addicted to Gilmore Girls. The whole plot is mediocre, but the language kinda just catches you and reels you in like a silly lil fish rolleyes.gif

I love the music from Nightmare before Christmas...

I haven't seen Corpse Bride yet, because it disturbed me that the commercials for it used the music from Nightmare. However, if any of my friends see it and recommend it (at least those who's movie picks I trust) I'll probably end up seeing it.

yeah...I like the quick, quippy dialogue, even if it sounds very scripted.

Not more Gilmore Girls fans? Sues had the US release date for the fourth series written on all the calendars around the house. Well, it could be worse: it's well written, well performed, and just generally good, but I think I might be lacking a bit of a chromosome required to get really enthusiastic about it!

i enjoyed it, it wasnt the best movie i have ever seen but worth seeing. it had a nice message etc andreally cool artwork. also some pretty hysterical satirical jokes thrown in that you have to pay attention to get.

Well, maybe you're right. But I dont watch much tv. (sadly now I acctually watch it....) and thats the only show that acctually keeps me working to keep up with what they're saying.... tongue.gif Which means I have to like it cuz I dont get bored sitting there biggrin.gif

Saw it today, and enjoyed myself. There's only a few songs, and they're all pretty good, I think. The visual style was excellent, and the script was generally good.

They did seem bent on exhausting every possible pun and sight gag related to animated corpses. There's an awful lot.
Velvet
Sounds pretty good then.

It isn't out in my area until 25th (October.)

Once I have the money I'll go see it. smile.gif

I saw it last night. Missed the beginning though so it was completely baffling. Especially the end. Could someone please explain? Anyway, other than that, the animation was really fun and it was quite funny.

I'm having trouble with this, was the Nightmare before Christmas about all those skeletons and ghouls that always really worked towards hallowe'en like the whos in the grinch, but then decided to change christmas? 'caus I watched it a long time ago and I've forgotten it pretty much.

I do want to see corpse bride though just because Johnny Depp's in it

IATB: I'll explain in a PM, so we don't spoil the film for people who haven't seen it smile.gif

Commie's review is the most convincing case for seeing it that I've heard... Still, I don't have a lot of money, and when it's between Wallace and Grommit and Tim Burton I think the Brits are going to win!
Jatopian
Don't make this a nationalist issue, Mata. I'll ban you! biggrin.gif

Aw, come on! In a competition for overall greatest entertainment, I really do think that Wallace & Grommit are going to beat Tim Burton's animations.

I get this image in my head of a Celebrity Death Match with Jack the pumpkin king and Mr. Boogie Woogie fighting against Wallace & Grommit.

I do think that Wallace and Grommit will be better, although I doubt I'll be able to see either of them in theaters.
Astarael
I haven't seen Wallace and Grommit and I don't really plan to. Some people can get really into it, but I've seen some of their stuff and I didn't enjoy it that much. Ditto for not seeing The Corpse Bride. Nightmare Before Christmas was far more annoying than it was funny. My cousin forced me to watch it and he has every collectible item from that movie that he can get his hands on. *shakes head* I really don't understand why.

Ok my 2 cents (pennies). I saw this last night and i think that the style over substance argument can deffinately be applied, I also found it very entertaining for all that. the songs were not particularly catchy (with the notable exception of the skeletons rendition of the corpse brides story) and i think that danny elfman has maybe had his day, but having said that his off days are certainly better than some peoples best days, and the songs did fulfil their role of setting scene, delivering preposition and adding tone. the acting was not the best i have seen from any of the actors involved the only one that really shone was richard e grant with a deliciously camp performance. The film was very slow to start taking a while and a little patience to engage, but once it did engage it did take off quite nicely with supporting characters more than making up for the slightly lack lustre performance of the mains. Tim Burton has not done badly here but has not shined either. I did enjoy this and even confess to a small tear at the end and I get the feeling that this will bear up better after repeat viewings when its flaws can be better forgiven for familiarities sake. Not nescesarily one to rush to the cinemas for but maybe wait for home release.

ehh..i dunno. Nightmare Before Christmas was awesome in my opinion..the artwork, creepy sort of style, story line, beautiful music, etc. The corpse bride was pretty good..it had more than a few songs..there is A LOT of songs on the soundtrack.. neither stories were morbid at all in my opinion. but then again..what i think is morbid is just frighteningly disgusting. But hell... cool.gif thats my opinion. (yeah...first time ive been here in forever..)

The Nightmare Before Christmas is one of my favourite movies of all time, and I enjoyed CB, but I didn't think it was at the same standard as Nightmare. Obviously, 12 years after Nightmare, the animation is smoother and better, but it's too short for the plot to be fully developed and the music isn't nearly as good as that of Nightmare (and there are only four songs!).

I adore Danny Elfman, but I don't think this film is his best; I far preferred the music from Nightmare, Big Fish and Edward Scissorhands. There are a few songs, however, that are really great, including "Remains of the Day", "Tears to shed" and Victor and Emily's piano duet in particular.

Anyhoo, there's my ha'penny worth!
