I'm blatantly pinching this thread idea from another forum because it's quite interesting.
There's a big issue in computer games at the moment revolving around the lack of people who finish them. Apparently it's something like 80% of people have never finished a game.
I usually get to the end of everything I buy, but there have been a few that I didn't manage this on. Final Fantasy VII was one of those. I got to Sephiroth, fought for an hour and a half, died having done him almost no damage and never played it again I was so demoralised.
Okay, so I got a long way into that one, but what's the fastest that you've given up on a game?

The FPS Redneck Rampage. It's a fairly old game about some rednecks who need to fight their way through an army of alien invaders to save their prize pig before it is anal probed.
Sounds about as aweful as it actually was. Easy game but it just sapped your will to live.
Disgaea: Hour of Darkness. Brilliant game. I just overdosed playing it at some point and I'm having a breather. A 6 month breather. Just beat the huge dragon demon thingy (well, died to him actually but that fight is impossible).
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time. Again a brilliant game. Now that I'm single and boring again I probably have time to finish it. Love the fight system, and how piss-easy it is when you powergame in it. It's great fun killing bosses in one or two moves.
I've finished every other game that I own I think. If for no other reason I like to for a sense completion. Most games are just so anti-climatic at the end though. Once you've finished most of it you will just ruin it by seeing the crappy end-sequence.

I had a similar thing with Final Fantasy X. Got to the third incarnation of...I forget his name, I had three of my strongest players up, I'd never really had any problem with them being too weak, but suddenly, two hits from this one boss and they were all dead! I ended up looking on the website for hints, it said I needed to run about and get, not only every character to their overdrive attack, but all of the summons too! At which point I gave up. I had a similar thing with Devil May Cry and I just got bored of Viewtiful Joe because of the lack of save points.

Shenmue is a fantastic game, and I've completed it many times, so I was expecting the same from Shenmue 2. It's a fantastic game aswell (despite the fact that I have the Japanese with English subtitles version for Dreamcast), but at one point I needed to make something like 8,000 chinese dollars from street fighting - something which to this day I haven't been bothered to do.
Also Metal Gear Solid for Gameboy is confusingly annoying, the same goes for Metal Gear on NES and MSX.
In other news, my SNES died on me today. RIP, for it shall be a while before I can play Super Mario Kart again.

I love Black Isle studios games. Baldur's Gate was awesome, Baldur's Gate II was awesomer and Planescape: Torment just blew me away with its sheer awesomestness. Icewind Dale I gave up on very quickly. It didn't have the spark the other games did.
I give up first person shooters very quickly. Half Life 2 I gave up on quite early on, Far Cry I gave up on even earlier, after I got bored of swimming around the fantastically beautiful game world. Call of Duty had a very short single player game, which was perfect for me. Can't wait for Call of Duty 2.

Funnily enough, Far Cry is the most recent game that I've quite really early in. I installed it during the late summer, played it for about an hour until I got to the first villagey thing then just couldn't work out what I was supposed to do. If I nicked the jeep then everyone shoots me. If I start sniping out the guards then very quickly I get spotted and everyone shoots me, and if I just sneak around I get spotted and everyone shoots me. I'm sure there was some very logical method of progress that I utterly overlooked (probably involving getting shot at slightly less) but I just didn't feel very motivated to find it.
Doom 3 was also dumped after a fairly short amount of time. It wasn't helped that the graphics chugged a fair bit due to my abject lack of sooper-dooper graphics card wizardry, but I think the real clinchers were two things 1. it was so obviously scripted events all the way, i.e. monsters will appear when player enters grid part X, 2. despite being so pre-ordained it was still very very tense. I found myself relieved to have stopped playing, and I quickly came up with a solution to this: don't start playing in the first place.
Those are probably the shortest amount of time I've played a game before ditching it recently.

I'll agree with Doom3. It was just a chore to play.
You can either shoot enemies OR see where you are going, not both. Your character can't keep his flashlight out if he's using a weapon and you don't get enough ammo to use the muzzle-flare to see where you are going.
Also it tries to scare you by putting an enemy in every dark corner (they are ALL dark corners) and spawn new ones behind you whenever you pick up armour or ammo. It's not scary because you know exactly when it is going to happen and where they will come from.
And last of all there is no plot. You know who's evil from the intro and it doesn't deviate. I watched my bro complete it just because I loved DooM 1 and 2 when they came out. I couldn't force myself to play it more than a few hours, it was just too painful.
Infact FPS are easy to loose interest with. After you have played them an hour or two you have pretty much seen all there is to. You may miss out on some later weapons and enemies but you have pretty much seen all the game is capable of showing you. Unless the story is very good or has really cool features (System Shock, Deus Ex) it's more fun to just pick up a book.

Black and White when I first played it.
I couldn't progress because I loved being evil, and my villages didn't grow under my thumb, also as I had killed off most of the other villages I couldn't stretch my influence to the goal.
BnW2 is great as I can be evil and send my armies to conquer for me.

Um... it's either Final Fantasy VII where I barely beat the first segment and haven't touched it since. It was either that or Skies of Arcadia: Legends. God that game was boring! No voice acting, crappy sounds, crappy graphics, boring story, and infuriating boss mechanics. Not to mention that horrible boat fighting mechanic.

Druuna, I picked a game because of the scantily dressed large breasted lady on the front cover, and the fact that it was £3 in a bargain bin (i'll let you make up your mind which was the more deciding factor) Druuna promised revolutionary non linear game play and an amazing new control system. what it delivered was an incomprehensible plot (read non linear game play) and a character that wouldn't move or fight (read new control system) and it kept crashing so badly it damaged my computer, I ditched it after the third playing. So Druuna, don't do it!

I am a big fan of the Final Fantasy series of games, but I've never finished one.
I love the games for the story, and the general fun of the whole thing. I don't love it for the battles. Those bore me. And there's a part right at the end of every Final Fantasy where you reach the Crater, or the Palace, or Sin, or whatnot, and there's nothing really left but a series of difficult battles. I switch off then, because the rest of the game just won't interest me.

The number of times I've managed to finish a game can be counted on one hand. It's got to the point where I hardly ever play them due to not being able to get any further than the second level or something stupid like that. I know I'm not good at playing games but I do enjoy them but there's only so many time you can play a level before you get very very bored. I even have a game I cant get passed the training which to me is beyond stupid. Anyway that my rant and I'll leave now.

hmmm. Never finished Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3. Not that I havent tried but I still can't figure out how to get the secret tape on the last (bonus) level.
I never finished that weird game I rented where you travel back in time to try and stop yourselve from being killed. I need to figure out the name so I can buy it.
The only game I can think of that I really gave up on was Conkers Bad Fur Day. I dont know why but I absoluty hated this game. Except the crazy Teddy Bears I found nothing all the apealling or fun about it.

I have to say that i loved this game, but then my maturity level runs to about the same level of toilet humour that this game aimed at, my favourite part had to be the opera singing poo! or putting out the flame sprites with your urine. But I can see how it wouldn't appeal to all.

That sounds like Shadow Of Memories, the game that we were discussing earlier in the thread. You're killed right at the start then have to go back and prevent your death, then a weird story about a homunculus kicks in. There are loads of very different endings that are well worth finding!
Mention of Conker reminds me of Fur Fighters. Sues and I got to a point a few hours in, got stuck, sold it. I think what really destroyed my chances of being motivated to go back and work it out was the simple error they'd made in using a non-standard control set-up: the left stick looked and the right stick moved. Every time I wanted to do something I'd have to consciously think about it before moving my fingers. I became slightly more accustomed to it after a while, but it was still awkward. Such a simple mistake can really ruin a game!

I can't remember if it is called Mist or Myst, but I have never been able to complete that. I have got about 40% through it, then just got stuck and didn't have a clue as to what to do. Oh, and I have repeatedly tried to play The Scarlet Room and got into the next room, but gave up.

Errm. Resident Evil 4. I can't for the life of me get past the first bit - I get my head chopped off by a fat man with a chainsaw. And I simply can't be bothered to try, so it's currently sitting on the pile of stuff to be Ebay'd.
Similarly, Final Fantasy:Crystal Chronicles. It's crap with only one person, so I've never bothered, and I've not had anyone else available on a regular basis to come round and play games with, so that's also on the pile of stuff to get through.
Errm, and Ninja Gaiden. Never got past the second level - the boss kicked my ass a number of times, so I gave up. It's on the pile.
And to this day, I've never got more than an hour into Ico - talk about dull.
I've never finished a game.
sometimes (alright, most of the time) I forget that games actually have an end to them and I just play them until I get bored, though now I'm playing Psychonauts with my boyfriend and it's very odd feeling because we've actually gotten to the second last level.
Might finish one yet! (though I doubt it, since I'm bored by battles and I just play for the pretty colours, stories and puzzles)

I think I managed to play grim fandango for a whole 25 minutes before giving up. Its one of those games I thought "wow that looks sooooo cool when it first came out, then some friends of mine said how good it was. Then fast forward to last year and i see it for 99p. I get it and install it. I managed to get outside but then i got stuck. Fiddled around for a while then uninstalled it.
Other than that the only games i've played without finishing are... erm... half life. But i'm working on that. It just has a nasty habit of crashing every 20 minutes or so then requiring me to restart. So i do about a 1/2 hour a week.

I'm still working on Fallout 2, I would get done alot faster If I would refrain from replaying every scenario available.

I felt a great wave of satisfaction when I got the rocket to take off. It was like I'd really accomplished something. Then I got into the weird new world with all the grass and weird sculptures and I had no idea where to go from there.

I think we still have a copy somewhere. But we got rid of our mac years ago I wonder if you can get it for PCs. I'd love to give it another go.
