family guy is the best by far
IrishGuy
I do like Family Guy, but I grew up on the Simpsons.
PsychWardMike
This is more of a media topic, and for future reference, I'd reccomend trying to make a little more discussion. smile.gif

Anyway, I'm a fan of the Family Guy, The Simpsons, and South Park... American Dad not so much. However, different shows have different times in their series that are pinnacles. Of all of them, I'm probably a bigger South Park fan, but.... it's all debateable.

sorry i am a new user and didn't know where to place this poll it will not happen in future reference
PsychWardMike
Don't worry about it. We all make mistakes and no one's really mad about the situation, it's just best to get your feet wet with some other topics to see how this board works rather than jumping in on the first try.
Greeneyes
American dad. By a long shot.

Family guy fan over here.

Owner of all seasons and film.

do you know when season 4/5 is aired in the UK?

The Simpsons, by far!

I have only seen odd episodes of Family Guy, and just the one episode of American Dad. Both seem quite good, but didn't make me laugh the way that The Simpsons does. I used to despise South Park, finding it needlessly offensive. It took me a good four years to realise that the foul-mouthed nature was perhaps meant to be ironic? I appreciate it a little more now, but still don't actively seek to watch it.
Apollyon
I am a HUGE fan of Family Guy. It has the exact same random sense of humor that I do.

Southpark and American Dad were in close second. Southpark because... I don't know, it's just so randomly offensive. And American Dad because it gives me yet another excuse to laugh at the radical right wing government.

While I do enjoy South Park a lot, and Family Guy has really grown on me, The Simpsons is still the ruling king of the cartoon series. No other cartoon has been as consistently entertaining to so many people for so long. The writing is superb, the animation is often sparse but still effective, and Danny Elfman's theme tune is still somehow not annoying despite the fact I've probably heard it more often in my life than any other single piece of music.

While I can agree that some people might enjoy other cartoons more, when it comes to the overall best I don't think that there really can be any question.
little_bear
I think The Simpsons 'jumped the shark' long ago, personally. Family Guy is now far superior, and even that is beginning to show signs of running out of material.
PsychWardMike
I don't think that Family Guy is running out of material so much as it is relying too much on old fan favorite jokes. Yeah, people wanted to see Olly Williams, the Chicken, the Pedophile, etc. again after their stint of limbo, but they need to save them for less use or at least come up with some new recurring jokes. I think the they're trying to keep ratings up for a while before they do anything too new.

Still the best is South Park.
pgrmdave
Family Guy is silly, and slapstick. Yeah, it's funny a bit, and it's random enough to keep it interesting, but I don't think that it's a great cartoon.

South Park is really good - it has a good cast of different characters, it has good social commentary, and it's funny. However, it was built on shock value, and now that's running out. What was shocking when it started isn't shocking any more. There will soon come a point when it's not shocking, and it will have to rely more and more on good writing without trying to be disturbing.

However, the Simpsons is the greatest cartoon currently being made. Yeah, it's not as good as it once was, but it's been running so long, what would you expect? When it started, it was terribly shocking to watch, and even hailed as the downfall of western civilization. But over the years, it remained consistently funny. Perhaps the only show which I feel was more consistently funny was Sienfeld. The Simpsons have been running for 16 years, and has been a favorite of mine ever since I began watching television.

The Simpsons are just plain legendary. South Park was a close second, but just doesn't quite compare..

True.

I nulled so icould show you the order of my thoughts:
1) SIMPSONS! *goes crazy and then carmly sits down*
2)South Park
3)Family Guy
4)American Dad

And where is Futurama *looks around like this > unsure.gif and then goes like this > ohmy.gif*

To all those who hate Simpsons I smite you!
Calantyr
Futurama, followed by Family Guy.

But I see you heathens have not placed a Futurama option!

Futurama is great, but it just doesn't have the rewatch value that Simpsons carries, plus it is clearly aimed at geeks. That might be a great way to make sure there is always a campaign for your return, but it doesn't always lead to a wider intellectual appeal.

Futurama. Simpsons with ray guns. Taking something good and making it better.
Mata
Futurama is Simpsons but with a constant science fiction theme. Simpsons sometimes has a science fiction theme but it has a broader remit so appeals to more people. I like sci fi so enjoy Futurama, but not everyone describe the addition of space ships as an enhancement!

Then they are all fools of the highest calibur! wink.gif

Yes it's true that the Simpsons has a wider scope. However most Hollywood movies are designed to have a 'wider scope' and I would say they are npt particularily good BECAUSE they have to appeal to as many people as possible.

I like the way the Simpsons is so easy to watch. It doesn't take sides in a debate so you don't feel like you are being preached to. While South Park and Family Guy can usually be counted on to take the more 'liberal' side, the Simpsons just takes all sides of the argument and makes fun of them all. The only thing that you can be sure of is that at the end of the episode everything ends on a heart-warming note, or at least everything is back to normal.

I like Futurama more because you start to care about the characters. I almost cried at the end of the episode with Fry's dog. You don't just watch it for the laughs, you also want to know what's going to happen with the people. You really want Fry and Lela to hook up. There isn't an episode of Futurama that I can't rewatch and laugh. The same isn't true for Family Guy or South Park, and the Simpsons have really gone done in quality lately. They're starting to pick it back up, but for a while, I couldn't even stand to watch it.

But you can't argue with the fact that Simpsons has been on since... television began. Honestly, its been what 14 years? That's simply amazing.

Except when they killed Ned's wife or decide one of the sisters is gay... But it does normally reset.
PsychWardMike
Patty and Selma? They've been making allusions to that for years, but when did it happen?
The Travis
I think it was the Gay Marriage episode.

That's another thing about the Simpsons. They do "hot button" episodes long after they've cooled down.
PsychWardMike
Huh. Must have missed it. Ah well. I watch enough reruns that I'll see it eventually

That's one of the best parts of the Simpsons. If you haven't seen it yet, you will! I get lucky because they show an hours worth of reruns every day on two different channels. Two hours of the Simpsons! Joy!
PsychWardMike
We used to have a possible 4 hours a day, but that's not so anymore. Pity, now it's one hour.
Astarael
Shows go from getting no reruns to getting lots to getting not so many as a series moves on. Network managers will run marathons of nearly everything popular eventually to kill time, so you wind up getting most of what you've missed if you look at the TV schedule.
EvilSpoon
Family Guy and American Dad make me laugh out loud and are about the only shows on TV that do.

South Park, in my opinion, is a disgrace to animation and comedy.

Simpsons was never something I've ever really watched much so I've got nothing on it. Although I have to say, since the creators of Simpsons made Futurama as well I would more than likely enjoy it.

Speaking of which, why is Futurama not up there?
PsychWardMike
I disagree that it's a travesty to comedy. Comedy is based upon satire which, after the Daily Show and possibly The Boondocks, South Park leads the way. Woo!

Oh god damnit.
Chronotub
I voted for Simpsons, although I have a hard time deciding between that Futurama, South Park and Monkey Dust
Daria
I think South Park has evolved greatly from what used to be an animation about some kids in primary school, to a rather clever, hillarious and satirical view of what's going on in the world. E.g the episode about voting (for the giant douche or the turd sandwich) and the Peta members. Yes, there may be needless amounts of swearing, but the shock factor really isn't there anymore, so now people take notice of the moral stories running throughout.

Re. Simpsons not taking sides- there is ALWAYS a moral story in each Simpsons episode. Be it Homer's homophobia, or Apu's arranged marriage; there is always a side (liberal, obviously) which is taken, thus meaning that everything ends happily ever after.
