For those that don't read my blog (do any of you read my blog?) here's a great website:
http://retrospec.sgn.net/index.phpIt’s remakes of classic 8bit games. I’m cutting myself off after rediscovering how much fun Lunar Jetman still is (remade as Solar Jetman). These are lovely, simple old games given a new lease of life for the PC age. They’re free to download too! Hurrah!

I read your blog.
And it looks like a good site, but it's going to take up much of my time now.

I read your blog

And always wonder how people find out about this stuff....
I'd probably download the game but I've never been very good at games and they often make me very angry....

These are old-fashioned games, the sort of thing gamers my age built up our reflexes with. They can be tricky, but they are also very simple to understand and play. Basically they are the direct fore-runners of the Flash games that I and others like me make these days... Except these have been remade to have pretty-but-retro graphics and music.

I'll go there over Christmas break when I have more free time. Just now I'm avoiding all the studying for finals that I really should be doing. *sighs*

Compared to the high scores some people get, so do I! I've done pretty well on some of them, but some gamers have a lot more time than me to play on these things. Besides, I've usually played the games countless times by the point that the high-score table is added, I don't want to play them much more by then!
Playing more is the only way to get better. Still, these games to demonstrate that they certainly make games a lot easier these days!

If I play more, I'll become an addict, and have yet another reason to not do my homework!
*trys to figure out more ways to blame lack of homework on Mata....*

I do have some stats for my blog but it's difficult to translate them into a meaningful idea of who is visiting and how often. It's nice to know people do go on there because I put a lot of effort into finding interesting things to post about!
Many years ago I decided that a goal of mine would be to be named in the UK budget as a deleterious factor on the global economy through distracting too many people from their work. I suspect I might not quite get there, but it's a fun goal to aim for!

You complete bastard. I've just been off work sick for 4 days. I could've used these. Now I'm going to be pressed for the time to honour them properly over Chrimble.

EDIT - Head over Heels. Head over Bloody Heels. Thanks again. Hmph.

There are numerous emulators around on the web that could run you a fine version of the C64 on your PC. I haven't seen a remake of it yet though.
And Jon, it's not my fault if you don't pay enough attention to things that I post. Maybe this will teach you to jump to it next time. Ha!... Err... Sorry you've been ill too.

I have an amiga emulator and the files for both games but the emulator is less than reliable and will not run them

hence my search for remakes.

Google is your friend
http://marticus.midnightrealm.org/wiz/downextra.html There's a remake for Windows at the bottom of the page. I've no idea how good it is.

Anyone managed to get that working, 'cos it spits out some error message about not finding berliners or something?

Yep, it works for me with no problems. I'm also incredibly rubbish at it, but I don't think I played the original so I can't say how accurate a remake it is. It's possible that it's just ridiculously hard.

Huzzah for the two dimensional characters of yore!
This has less to do with Mata's god-like ability to find amazing things, and more to do with my own mind numbing nerdiness.
The ArchiveSaid link (I hope it works, right now it looks all spooty. If not the site is www.archive.org) goes to a page where old movies have been collected. When I say old I don't mean last summer's hits, I mean the classic era of cinema. There are silents by Lon Chenney, Borris Karloff, Max Schrek, and others of such a vocation. What's happened is that the studio ownership of these films is up, so they are free for download.
I reccomend the Nosferatu myself.

I love that site. The old 'educational' films are brilliant. The ones warning about the dangers of homosexuality are particularly amusing, as is the one that explains that you can either have a democracy or facism (forgetting entirely about Communism, which was probably what they were trying to explain). 'Reefer Madness' is also a classic, which I believe has also been turned into a musical recently.

It was bastad hard. After several months of practice, Pete The Bastard and I finished it in one sitting. Took us the entire day of trying, and remember that this is was the days when ergonomics meant nothing other than the study of gnomes'. I had blisters from that bloody joystick for
