emo music is generally screaming. or has screaming vocals.
i have yet to hear a real emo song that complains about life.
the closest thing ive ever heard so far was.
"i tried to understand but i couldnt" or something along those lines.
sometimes emo(screamo) lyrics have political lyrics to them
such as this.
"death squads trained, to serve the pigs rage for hegemony.." by kaospilot.
poli-emo!?
well, you get the point i hope.

. Emo seems to be a spin off from the Nu-Metal...thing, Lost Prophets and the like and seem to predominantly sing about unrequited love *tear*.
Like Cand said, the analogy with the aligator and crocodile is flawed what with there being fixed physical properties inherant to each which set them apart.
lmao
hahaha

emo comes from nu metal.
no, emo was derrived from punk or hardcore if im correct, somewhere in the late 80s.
nu metal, is....metal.

Punks hate emo, simple.as.that. So much so I've seen a Punk walk around with "F*ck Emo" written on his hat, no self respecting punk would become emo! Like I said, you can argue anything about anything in musical genre, there is no way to prove yourself right 100%. Besides, I thought you said emo didn't exist....

I really don't think that one needs to read this deeply into a group of people. I just thought emo was a bunch of people who wore black skinny jeans, t-shirt too small, had black hair and a side fringe. Perhaps people who were trying to go for the gothy look but failed and decided that they really preferred music with a more poppy beat and slightly lighter and happier?

I don't see how emo came from punk, I'm talking proper punk, old skool punk, not the lame imitation punk that most kids seem to like these days. If your meaning is Pop-Punk like Green Day, then I can see where you're coming from...sorta....
Look at it this way: Punk > Emo = Complete F*cking Pussy.
Emo wouldn't know punk if it came up and bit it, though like a friend said, punk would more likely come up and nut it in the face.
**Disclaimer: No I don't think Green Day are lame...much...

Partly I agree with T, that this thread should die. But mostly, I feel like posting.
SPS, you're mixing saying that "new" emo like MCR and Lostprophets** didn't come from old school punk. And, well, you're right. But that's not what TV_with_legs is saying.
"New" emo evolved from a mix of "old" emo and other modern genres like pop-punk (fall out boy, the ataris, senses fail) and post-harcore (finch, funeral for a friend, my chemical romance). "Old" emo - like Rites of Spring and Embrace - came straight out of the hardcore scene. Now don't you go telling me I'm wrong until you've sat down and listened to some Rites of Spring.
As for where I first heard the term emo, it was probably in reference to Jimmy Eat World. And I like them, so I looked around a bit and found it applied to bands like Texas Is The Reason and (early) Death Cab For Cutie. So I did a little digging around in the history of the genre, and thats when I hit the jackpot: Sunny Day Real Estate. This was probably in my first year of college, so that'd be four or five years ago. Only in the past two or three years have I heard emo refer to the lifestyle.
I'm arguing about the history of emo with people I've never met while my side parting hides one of my eyes! I don't know if I've ever felt so white middle class.
**first time I've ever heard them called emo, but hey: pretty much everything that made it in the last four years has been labled emo, so why not them?

emo and punk are very similiar
intrinsically different
Punk = agression aimed at the world and the inequities of the world as directed against the individual, Punk fights world lets everyone know about it.
Emo = non understanding of the world and the inequities of the world as directed against the individual, Emo fights with self and own non understanding and lets everyone know about it.
Similar themes, very different outlook and execution.

How we define cultural concepts can be an issue as we disagree about exactly how things are classified, and we take things a bit more seriously when they're in the Issues area.

I just found this thread after having 'never seen it before' and started reading a post. This guy (or girl, it turned out to be a guy in the end though) was saying about something he'd seen and I was thinking "I've seen that". And then I was reading more and I was thinking "Wow, I really agree with him" And then I looked at the display pic and though "I recognise him! It's.. it's me!"
