I haven't seen this movie yet, they won't play it in my town. (Let's remember I live in the Bible Belt) But seriously, was there this much fuss over "If These Walls Could Talk 2"? In some theaters it was playing but then it got pulled. If you don't know the short version it's about two gay cowboys. Heath Ledger and Jake Genahaal (poor spelling) play the two cowboys. Another movie that got pulled from some theaters was "9/11" They never played it here. It may be so taboo because it's not about two gay hair dressers in HollyWood, but about what America sees as Manly Men, I think it really strikes hard in the hearts of homophobes. And plus all those seven-year-olds that dress up as cowboys, parents may be afraid that they're dressing up as homosexual cowboys (Oh My! laugh.gif ). So, for those of you that have seen it, what do you think? And what do you think about the comotion its causing, and about the censorship its recieving. I honestly think the censorship is good business for the movie.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, these two aren't the first big actors to play provocative roles...I think "Good Night, and Good Luck" ( I think that's what its called ) the one with George Clooney and the whole Mc Carthy thing. That movie was also banned in some theaters...I don't understand why, Mc Carthy was such a *insert 4th-grade-level insult*. Then again, I never saw the movie. But I will see Brokeback Mountain on the 1000" screen that is the theater, even if I do have to drive an hour to get there... dry.gif I hate living in Hickville.

INSERT GENERIC "BAREBACK MOUNTAIN LOL" COMMENT HERE.

I want to see this film, but none of my friends will go with me, on about of it being a 'gay' film.

*rolls eyes*

Well what I don't understand... if it was about two hot lesbians... it'd be playing everywhere... but it's not, its about guys, and it seems that people (especially us Americans) get edgy when we talk about that subject. Funny you should say it being a "gay" film... I was talking about it with one of my friends and someone who just popped in the conversation was like "Oh, the gay cowboy movie". I don't think anyone referred to Lonesome Dove as "Oh, the straight cowboy movie". lol.
Mata
Actually, even if was about lesbians, it would probably only get shown if they were acting like psychopathic man-haters, eg. Monster.

From the reviews I've read (which I admit is not a great source of info, but it's better than nothing) the film really doesn't care about them being gay, it's more about them being in love but unable to do anything about it, and they just happen to both be men. In that respect it's not really a film about gay cowboys, instead it's a frustrated-love story. That probably makes it a better film, but it also conveniently sidesteps many of the most pressing issues about representing homosexuality in American cinema.

Personally I've got very little interest in seeing it, not because it sounds like it skimps on the politics where it could easily make some good points, not because it sounds like a bad story (it sounds quite good), but mainly because I find most romance films incredibly tedious, no matter what the gender or sexual orientation of the people involved.

I'm a bit annoyed at all the censorship and fuss it's recieving, but I suppose it's to be expected, what with homosexuality being such a hot-button issue these days. I don't really enjoy romance films much unless the people in love are fighting ninjas or some such for a lot of the time. tongue.gif Censoring it is just going to give it more press and more viewers as people watch it just to see what all the fuss is about.
Anyway, it sounds like a decent movie overall and it'll probably win a few Oscars. I can understand why people might not want to see it, (my friend simply said that she didn't feel like paying our local inflated ticket prices to watch two guys in love when there were other films she cared about more) but pulling it out of the theaters seems very uptight. Here's hoping that Hickville loosens up about what shows in the local theaters.

Romantic films are dull, but romantic retro-80s high-school reunion assassin films are great. Admittedly only one springs to mind, and that's Gross Pointe Blank, but it demonstrates that romantic comedies are far more fun when high-calibre silenced rifles and pen-stabbings are involved.
Daria
I want to go see this film, and will probably end up going with a male friend of mine!
It is annoying me how whenever it is mentioned, an episode of South Park comes to mind- the one with the film festival in South Park, and about how all the films are just gay cowboy porn. I have read the book, and it is pretty well written- but i am apprehensive of seeing the film as they are never as good as the books!

In an interview with Heath Ledger, a journalist asked what he would say to all the people who just call the film a gay cowboy movie. Heath replied with "I would tell them that they are wrong." So he is then asked to say what the film IS about.

"Its about two cowboys who struggle with their homosexual feelings".
candice
The nearest theater to me where it's being shown is 180 miles away. This didn't surprise me at all.

It's one of those things where I kind of want to see it to see if it's worth all the fuss that people are making over it...hrm. Plus the fact that I literally can't see it anywhere even remotely close only makes me that much more curious about it.

It brings a new meaning to riding bareback..... biggrin.gif

Must see this movie. I love cowboy stuff.

I think I'll just go see "March of the Penguins" instead dry.gif

Well, as the old saying goes, no publicity is bad pulbicity. Movies and albums that raise controversy often do well because of the amount of attention. I'm sure more people got into metal because of the controversy surrounding Marilyn Manson and Slipknot. Movies are no exception.

What you also have to factor in, Aislinn, is that the cinema here has only seven theaters while the ones in Jacksonville have anywhere between ten to fifteen, possibly more (with stadium seating and Dolby Digital surround sound, none-the-less). This is probably why they limit their showings of "offensive" movies - because they want to draw in business from the moral majority and homophobic Yulee types. They showed Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back for one week (as in one circulation) and House of 1000 Corpses for one weekend, assumable so they could put in circulation another gnarly war movie or a teen comedy glorifying promiscuity, drugs and/or alcohol abuse, because Rob Zombie and Kevin Smith are horrible, amoral people.

My girlfriend, who's appalled by our lack of theatrical selection (she's from Jax), wants me to go see it with her. Since it won't be playing in mine and Aislinn's area, the girlfriend and I are going to have to plan a special trip into the city. That sucks.

EDIT: Actually, it probably would fair better if it was about two women. Straight guys around here love lesbian sex (or rather, Hollywood lesbian sex). I once put on The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love at my house and two of my friends immediately asked, "Is there a lezzie sex scene in this? Cool! Can you fast-foreward to it?" I got really pissed about that for some reason (especially after I came back from the bathroom and saw that they had already fast-forewarded). I forgot (in a sense) that the movie was about a gay girl and a bi girl in a relationship. Meanwhile, my friends were drooling at the thought to see two chicks go at it in a movie. I'm damn certain my friends aren't the only guys like this around here.

That reminds me of the time the announcer on Channel 4 said before GroundHog Day started

"And now, possibly the best romantic time-loop comedy of them all...."
Mata
Kate & Leopold is a sort-of timeloop romantic comedy. It's not common, but it happens. I can't think of anything else like Gross Pointe Blank but I suspect that there are probably a few films from the far east that have a comedy-romance-assassin theme, although the retro-80s highschool-reunion twist is probably quite distinctive.

This makes me think of a new thread...
IrishGuy
I went and saw it the day before yesterday. 2 hours in a theater. Lots of little old ladies. The movie wasn't nearly as good as I thought it would be. I felt it was pretty drawn out.

Sliding Doors is close to a time loop romantic comedy. Except there's no loop, merely a fork. Not the same. And a rubbish movie to boot. Didn't see that one coming - a Gyweth Paltrow movie starring a not-very-well-know-outside-of-Britain British actor? Sounds fab that does.

I loved the way they had to cut her hair in one branch of time so that you wouldn't have to think to hard to figure out which bit was which. Bless them.
Daria
A friend of mine has recently written a play which reminds me of Sliding Doors and Romeo and Juliet. It is about a couple who meet at a party, and just instantly get chatting and fall in love. She gets cancer and dies, and it ends by them being at the party again, but someone talks to him before he gets a chance to talk to her. It hasn't yet been performed, but it sounds as though it could be interesting.

Or seriously crap, but I am staying optimistic for my friend biggrin.gif

I loved Brokeback Mountain and was T9 texting (www.textfast.t9.com) everyone I knew telling them to go see it immediately upon exiting the theater. I don't think that it lived up to the hype, though, but with that much hype how could it?
