To a certain extent, with Time Team you have all of the time constraints but less of the financial ones which can be seen in both Jurassic Park and Labyrinth

With the availablity of portable computers and more sophisticated mechanical tools, probably quite significantly
Do you think the glamorisation of archaeology in the media is a good or a bad thing? Why?
It probably has both good and bad bits, it brings peoples attention to it but possibly not to the bits that would help (example: need for funding etc)

I'm not sure, but I think that, like most things, media has completely distorted what archaeology is, a la the CSI shows.

The thought hadn't really occured to me before reading this question, but I suppose a large repertoire of knowledge would be something that newcomers would aspire to possess, and so I would consider those to have vast libraries of knowledge on the subject to be role models, yes.

I have a vague interest in the subject, but far too vague to ever get into it. Were I to list the top 20, or possibly even 50 jobs I would like to do in my life, I shouldn't imagine archaeologist would hit on it.

In a manner, yes. Though more in a kind of quietly glamorous way. I like the idea of being able to surround onesself with knowledge and relics of the past, and I consider museums to have glamour of a sort, and so archaeology, though perhaps not the manual work of digging itself, more the overall discovery and accumulation of items from the past to be glamorous.
Do you think what you see in the films/tv/books is an accurate portrayal of what archaeology is really like?
I don't really see a lot of of archeology in modern media. I would guess that for fiction, it is made to be more exciting to catch the interest of a wider group of people, but I suppose things like Time Team are reasonably accurate protrayals of what it is like, yes.

I assume technology, as with all things, has had a large impact on it. What with being able to scan underground things before digging, and finding otherwise invisible things previously written on texts and other such things. I would guess it has changed quite a lot.

I think that as with all things, it makes little difference. I think that glamourisation of archaeology would lead to a greater interest in the subject for the duration of the popularity of said glamourisation, as seen with things like psychology and forensic science, and then return to more normal levels. Aside from that, I don't think any effect it would have would be good or bad.

Pun intended." The only way I can see the glamour damaging archaeology is when the archaeologists start spending all their budgets on totally pimping their diggers, at the expense of the dig itself.

If I said the word “archaeology”, what would you think of?
Top of my head I think Egyptian pyramids, Incan society, and Hawaiian caving.
What period/place in history would you think of?
The big island of Hawaii before the death of Captain Cook.

I'm sorry I can't think of one.
If you could name only one archaeological book, what would it be?
Again I'm drawing a blank, sorry. Wait, would National Geographic work, or is it considered a magazine?

Howard Carter.
I'm trying very hard to remember the name of my professor in anthropology from university but unfortunately can only think of his nickname. Apparently on a dig he was one of the coolest people ever to work with. In the classroom he was often somewhat dull.
Can you name a female archaeologist?
No. I'm sure that women work in the field.
Do you think there are any role models to be found in archaeology?
Once you began studying archeology I'm certain you would find people to admire. I was rather pleased that a recent group of scientists agreed not to separate a cromagnan (neanderthal?) couple that was found in a rare double burial.
Would you ever consider a job in archaeology?
I did when I was in university. At this stage I would probably continue in health care.
Do you consider archaeology glamorous?
It looked to be hard work but very interesting hard work. The payoff of cool stuff would make up for the hours that could be spent armed with a small trowel and brush.
Do you think what you see in the films/tv/books is an accurate portrayal of what archaeology is really like?
Indiana Jones is probably not an accurate portrayal of archeology as a whole.
Do you think archaeology has changed at all over the past 100 years?
Yes. I think we're a bit more conscious of the importance of site. I don't think anyone would consider taking an Egyptian mummy and using it to fuel a train anymore. It'd horrify a number of people now.
Do you think the glamorisation of archaeology in the media is a good or a bad thing? Why?
Possibly good as it attracts more interest and consequently people and money to the field. Possibly bad in that it isn't an accurate portrayal. Answers to what, why and how of prehistory are slow in revealing themselves.

Maybe as a volunteer bone-scrubber, but I don't think I have the patience or dedication to be a bona-fide archaeologist.

Eh, whatever gets people interested. Really, it's a matter of exposing people who would have never considered a career in the field to the field. In one respect, the glamorisation is bad; it doesn't give them the real picture. But, more importantly, they're inspired to go and find out about the real picture for themselves.

But when I think about it, Tony Robinson's the better archaeologist. If he ever found the Holy Grail, he wouldn't go dropping it into the first earthquake he came across. Instead, he'd clean it with tiny brushes. Way more archeological.

It's basically about a girl who discovers two skeletons in a cave in France, not finished reading it 'cos I got too bogged down in 'real life' and stopped having regular three hour train journeys but it's pretty good. It's fiction, y'know, but the first few chapters are set in the French Pyrenees at an archaeological dig thing.

I wouldn't, because it seems like you have to work hard to find aand uncover things, and you would get dirty/sweaty so I don't think that would be considered glamourous. But it is excitiing when they find new things so in that respect it could be slightly glamourous.

I think certain aspects are, but on TV they don't show the length of time and work that it takes to do this job, so I don't think all of it is portrayed.

Do you think the glamorisation of archaeology in the media is a good or a bad thing? Why?
Good in a way as it attracts more people to the profession however it doesn't always give an accurate view of what archaeology is about. The films tend to be over glamorised but the TV shows can be quite accurate if not a little staid and boring.

Well I don't know him, but isn't SPS about a million feet tall? I would imagine that even the tallest of walls is small potatoes to a person of that kind of stature.

Digging up, looking for and finding old stuff; foundations; roads; tools; bodies (human and all elese, as well as insects and tiney creatures); jewles; ceramatics; types of things that have been found already, new things that make people (sometimes) know what better happened at a place in time.
What period/place in history would you think of?
Well, aside from the Anciant civilisations, anything really that's older than anyone alive, I guess. To put a time on it, maybe 150 plus years ago. As for place, well- anywhere, Doubt there are many places on earth where there arn't things to be dug up.
If you could name only one archaeological film/tv show, what would it be?
Time Team, thgouh I don't watch it. Mebbe if I had cable I could name some Discovery channel progs too.
If you could name only one archaeological book, what would it be?
Off the top of my head? None sping to mind, but I have a vuage recollection of an acrheology book a friend had on her coffee table some years ago about Egypt (she studied archeology at uni)

Do you think there are any role models to be found in archaeology?
There are probaly many, I'd think esp those who for their time pushed boundries and all that. If it were an area I was read up on in. Yes, I do thin k there are rle models to be found in archeology, however not being a subject that grabs me, I wouldnt feel them as role models to me,. And no, I don't have any who are.
Would you ever consider a job in archaeology?
I wouldn't not consider it, but my ambitions right now don't include it. Infact, to b e honest th eliklihood of me stumbling into a job in the feild, would be more likely than me aspiring to work in it.

Not particuarly, but then not many jobs are,, or if they are it's only to the people in that area already.
Do you think what you see in the films/tv/books is an accurate portrayal of what archaeology is really like?In ways yes, and in ways no. But it's not something I come across much in what I read and watch, (saw The Mummy Returns, as an example of the last media that was archeoogically based)

Advances in technology has probably changed it vastly, as well as maybe (to speculate) the, erm.... attitudes/ ideologies/ approaches to archeology. Stuff like remains that have been taken (was an article about some Aboriginal remains that Austrlisa (loosly paraphrsaing) deemeed should be given back from a museaum (think it was British) who contest that they are the only ones of their type and therefore the mudeaum should be allowed them). I guess ethics must of changed.

To shed light on archeology I would expect a good thing- opening up people's minds. But as to wheather it's a fair representation of what archelogy is, and how it is cnoducted, I dunno.

But when I think about it, Tony Robinson's the better archaeologist. If he ever found the Holy Grail, he wouldn't go dropping it into the first earthquake he came across. Instead, he'd clean it with tiny brushes. Way more archeological.

Yes and no. It will give you an idea of the basic cause they have to portary that to make it obvious the person an archaeologist but after that no because films and books are ment to be dramatic to keep your interest and Time team has a time limit again to keep interested.

Most definitely- looking back at the victorians and how they would just dig up things, to now how the archaeologists map out different layers of whatever they are digging up. Also, they have electro-magnetic mapping machines which allow them to make educated and informed guesses as to where the best place to dig would be, instead of just starting where they feel like.

Good thing because it is a field (no pun intended) which needs to be glamourised for the general public to take an interest- if it wasn't, people just wouldn't care.

I think I should mention that my mum has a huge interest in archaeology and so I was dragged about as a child, to digs and burial mouds. Also, not watching Time Team was a felony.
