Some of you may remember the test questionnaire I posted last year for my dissertation. I've refined it a bit now, and I've been told I need to base my dissertation around what answers I get back from this, so if you could all please take a few minutes to fill this in I would be so grateful!! (This is for everyone, don't feel like you shouldn't answer if you don't know anything about archaeology, I need the opinions of people like that the most!)
If I said the word “archaeology”, what would you think of?
What period/place in history would you think of?
If you could name only one archaeological film/tv show, what would it be?
If you could name only one archaeological book, what would it be?
Can you name an archaeologist?
Can you name a female archaeologist?
Do you think there are any role models to be found in archaeology?
Would you ever consider a job in archaeology?
Do you consider archaeology glamorous?
Do you think what you see in the films/tv/books is an accurate portrayal of what archaeology is really like?
Do you think archaeology has changed at all over the past 100 years?
Do you think the glamorisation of archaeology in the media is a good or a bad thing? Why?

I can't remember if I did the last one, but here you go.
If I said the word “archaeology”, what would you think of?
Digging, ruins, pottery, mosaics, bones
What period/place in history would you think of?
Romans, probably more Roman Britain
If you could name only one archaeological film/tv show, what would it be?
Gotta be Indiana Jones, probably Lost Ark
If you could name only one archaeological book, what would it be?
Erm. Coudn't name one to be honest.
Can you name an archaeologist?
Hmm. Tony Robinson
Can you name a female archaeologist?
Yes, if Lara Croft counts
Do you think there are any role models to be found in archaeology?
Er, yeah. There are role models to be found in every field.
Would you ever consider a job in archaeology?
Possibly. Lab-based rather than field-based though.
Do you consider archaeology glamorous?
Not really, conjures up images of that guy with the crazy hair from Time Team
Do you think what you see in the films/tv/books is an accurate portrayal of what archaeology is really like?
probably not, I would guess it takes longer, and there's less excitement. most things seem to be like that.
Do you think archaeology has changed at all over the past 100 years?
I'd assume so, with technological developments and new methods
Do you think the glamorisation of archaeology in the media is a good or a bad thing? Why?
Possibly a good thing, if it encourages more people to go into it

If I said the word “archaeology”, what would you think of?
Digging up dinosaurs
What period/place in history would you think of?
Mesozoic era
If you could name only one archaeological film/tv show, what would it be?
Time Team
If you could name only one archaeological book, what would it be?
There are Time Team books, and I know I've seen others but I couldn't name them. Labyrinth by Kate Mosse is sort of about archaeology, I guess but it's probably not what you mean
Can you name an archaeologist?
No
Can you name a female archaeologist?
No
Do you think there are any role models to be found in archaeology?
I'm sure there are
Would you ever consider a job in archaeology?
It was one of my top 5 jobs when I was about 8 but as of now I don't think it would suit me
Do you consider archaeology glamorous?
It a 'covered in dust and dirt' way, some of the things that are found are amazing so it has its own special glamour to it
Do you think what you see in the films/tv/books is an accurate portrayal of what archaeology is really like?
To a certain extent, with Time Team you have all of the time constraints but less of the financial ones which can be seen in both Jurassic Park and Labyrinth
Do you think archaeology has changed at all over the past 100 years?
With the availablity of portable computers and more sophisticated mechanical tools, probably quite significantly
Do you think the glamorisation of archaeology in the media is a good or a bad thing? Why?
It probably has both good and bad bits, it brings peoples attention to it but possibly not to the bits that would help (example: need for funding etc)

If I said the word “archaeology”, what would you think of?
Egypt, pyramids, mummies... is that still archaeology?
What period/place in history would you think of?
Egypt
If you could name only one archaeological film/tv show, what would it be?
Indiana Jones
If you could name only one archaeological book, what would it be?
Hmm... Does Timeline by Michael Crichton count?
Can you name an archaeologist?
No
Can you name a female archaeologist?
No
Do you think there are any role models to be found in archaeology?
Yes... (I couldnt name any, but I'm sure they exist...)
Would you ever consider a job in archaeology?
I wanted nothing more than to be an archaeologist when I was younger, but now I've moved to a more arts-based career ambition
Do you consider archaeology glamorous?
Yes... not real archaeology, but the idea of it from constant TV, film, and book fame.
Do you think what you see in the films/tv/books is an accurate portrayal of what archaeology is really like?
I'm not sure, but I think that, like most things, media has completely distorted what archaeology is, a la the CSI shows.
Do you think archaeology has changed at all over the past 100 years?
Yes, most likely.
Do you think the glamorisation of archaeology in the media is a good or a bad thing? Why?
Probably a good thing... it gets interest up, and people who would never think of a career in a less glamorized field might be drawn to archaeology. But with that, comes the loads of ignorance that television and movies can create.

I remember doing the last one!
If I said the word “archaeology”, what would you think of?
Digging, building buildings, putting pots back together, and Social Studies.
What period/place in history would you think of?
A few hundred years ago
If you could name only one archaeological film/tv show, what would it be?
The one where they tried building a pyramid.
If you could name only one archaeological book, what would it be?
I don't know.
Can you name an archaeologist?
Nopers.Wait, yes I can.. Er, Reigner. Something Reighner. He's Scottish. He tried to make a recreation of the roof that was supposed to be over the Coloseeum. And there was another guy.. Something Chris. Chris was British..
Can you name a female archaeologist?
Nope.
Do you think there are any role models to be found in archaeology?
Yeah, probably. I just don't have an example or anything.
Would you ever consider a job in archaeology?
No, not really.
Do you consider archaeology glamorous?
Eh, no.
Do you think what you see in the films/tv/books is an accurate portrayal of what archaeology is really like?
If it's one of those national geographic or whatever films, yeah. Otherwise, no.
Do you think archaeology has changed at all over the past 100 years?
Yes..?
Do you think the glamorisation of archaeology in the media is a good or a bad thing? Why?
Good thing, because it'll get people more interested in it.

If I said the word “archaeology”, what would you think of?
Digging, bones.
What period/place in history would you think of?
Roman
If you could name only one archaeological film/tv show, what would it be?
Time Team
If you could name only one archaeological book, what would it be?
It would be made up. I don't know any.
Can you name an archaeologist?
Tony Robinson's the nearest I could get I'm afraid, but he's more of a presenter.
Can you name a female archaeologist?
Again, the nearest I could get is Tony Robinson. So no. No I can't.
Do you think there are any role models to be found in archaeology?
The thought hadn't really occured to me before reading this question, but I suppose a large repertoire of knowledge would be something that newcomers would aspire to possess, and so I would consider those to have vast libraries of knowledge on the subject to be role models, yes.
Would you ever consider a job in archaeology?
I have a vague interest in the subject, but far too vague to ever get into it. Were I to list the top 20, or possibly even 50 jobs I would like to do in my life, I shouldn't imagine archaeologist would hit on it.
Do you consider archaeology glamorous?
In a manner, yes. Though more in a kind of quietly glamorous way. I like the idea of being able to surround onesself with knowledge and relics of the past, and I consider museums to have glamour of a sort, and so archaeology, though perhaps not the manual work of digging itself, more the overall discovery and accumulation of items from the past to be glamorous.
Do you think what you see in the films/tv/books is an accurate portrayal of what archaeology is really like?
I don't really see a lot of of archeology in modern media. I would guess that for fiction, it is made to be more exciting to catch the interest of a wider group of people, but I suppose things like Time Team are reasonably accurate protrayals of what it is like, yes.
Do you think archaeology has changed at all over the past 100 years?
I assume technology, as with all things, has had a large impact on it. What with being able to scan underground things before digging, and finding otherwise invisible things previously written on texts and other such things. I would guess it has changed quite a lot.
Do you think the glamorisation of archaeology in the media is a good or a bad thing? Why?
I think that as with all things, it makes little difference. I think that glamourisation of archaeology would lead to a greater interest in the subject for the duration of the popularity of said glamourisation, as seen with things like psychology and forensic science, and then return to more normal levels. Aside from that, I don't think any effect it would have would be good or bad.

If I said the word “archaeology”, what would you think of?
Tony Robinson and Time Team, mostly. A lot of digging, and using very small brushes to clean very large, very old ceramics. Also Jurassic Park, but then I remember that's Paleontology.
What period/place in history would you think of?
Romans
If you could name only one archaeological film/tv show, what would it be?
Time Team. Not Jurassic Park.
If you could name only one archaeological book, what would it be?
I imagine there's a time team coffee table sort of book out. Other than that, no.
Can you name an archaeologist?
Tony Robinson
Can you name a female archaeologist?
Toni Robinson?
Do you think there are any role models to be found in archaeology?
It's not the first place I'd look for role models, though I'm sure they're all nice chaps.
Would you ever consider a job in archaeology?
No.
Do you consider archaeology glamorous?
Sorry, no.
Do you think what you see in the films/tv/books is an accurate portrayal of what archaeology is really like?
I reckon Time Team is probably fairly accurate, because what other reason is there for it to be so dull?
Do you think archaeology has changed at all over the past 100 years?
Yes, but I wouldn't want to say how. I imagine improvements in technology have helped somehow.
Do you think the glamorisation of archaeology in the media is a good or a bad thing? Why?
I have yet to see this glamourisation, but I can't imagine it would be that much of a bad thing. Even if I'm personally not interested in it, I can see why archaeology is important, and if it's viewed as glamorous, more people are going to go "Hey, I'm totally digging archaeology right now. Pun intended." The only way I can see the glamour damaging archaeology is when the archaeologists start spending all their budgets on totally pimping their diggers, at the expense of the dig itself.

If I said the word “archaeology”, what would you think of?
Indiana Jones, Nazis, biblical stuff, Han Solo
What period/place in history would you think of?
WWII era Holy Land. And Germany
If you could name only one archaeological film/tv show, what would it be?
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
If you could name only one archaeological book, what would it be?
The Bible?
Can you name an archaeologist?
Not unless you count ol' Indy. Or maybe that guy from the show on Discovery about digging up old stuff like Atlantis or some such.
Can you name a female archaeologist?
No.
Do you think there are any role models to be found in archaeology?
I can't see why there wouldn't be, but damned if I know of them.
Would you ever consider a job in archaeology?
No.
Do you consider archaeology glamorous?
Not really. Hitler's been out of power for some time.
Do you think what you see in the films/tv/books is an accurate portrayal of what archaeology is really like?
You'd have to be a damned fool to think that.
Do you think archaeology has changed at all over the past 100 years?
Yes. More red tape, less to discover.
Do you think the glamorisation of archaeology in the media is a good or a bad thing? Why?
It hasn't been glamorized in a while. But I guess it's not a bad thing. Don't really have a reasone why.

What period/place in history would you think of?

Jurassic Park! Does that count?
If you could name only one archaeological book, what would it be?
Wow, I'm really too tired to be doing this. Err, Jurassic Park?

no
Can you name a female archaeologist?
no
Do you think there are any role models to be found in archaeology?
I'm sure there are role models to be found in every profession, so yes.
Would you ever consider a job in archaeology?
Probably not; I do find it interesting but not enough to make a job/career out of it.
Do you consider archaeology glamorous?
I suppose - I think of it as making exciting discoveries.
Do you think what you see in the films/tv/books is an accurate portrayal of what archaeology is really like?
I'm sure the parts that the general public would find boring are cut out, so you don't get the whole picture.
Do you think archaeology has changed at all over the past 100 years?
Yes - I'm sure technology has made an impact if nothing else has
Do you think the glamorisation of archaeology in the media is a good or a bad thing? Why?
I think that it is probably a good thing as it draws attention to our history and such. I guess I'm sort of ambivalent about it.

If I said the word “archaeology”, what would you think of?Top of my head I think Egyptian pyramids, Incan society, and Hawaiian caving.
What period/place in history would you think of?The big island of Hawaii before the death of Captain Cook.
If you could name only one archaeological film/tv show, what would it be?I'm sorry I can't think of one.
If you could name only one archaeological book, what would it be?Again I'm drawing a blank, sorry. Wait, would National Geographic work, or is it considered a magazine?
Can you name an archaeologist?Howard Carter.
I'm trying very hard to remember the name of my professor in anthropology from university but unfortunately can only think of his nickname. Apparently on a dig he was one of the coolest people ever to work with. In the classroom he was often somewhat dull.
Can you name a female archaeologist? No. I'm sure that women work in the field.
Do you think there are any role models to be found in archaeology?Once you began studying archeology I'm certain you would find people to admire. I was rather pleased that a recent group of scientists agreed not to separate a cromagnan (neanderthal?) couple that was found in a rare double burial.
Would you ever consider a job in archaeology?I did when I was in university. At this stage I would probably continue in health care.
Do you consider archaeology glamorous? It looked to be hard work but very interesting hard work. The payoff of cool stuff would make up for the hours that could be spent armed with a small trowel and brush.
Do you think what you see in the films/tv/books is an accurate portrayal of what archaeology is really like?Indiana Jones is probably not an accurate portrayal of archeology as a whole.
Do you think archaeology has changed at all over the past 100 years?Yes. I think we're a bit more conscious of the importance of site. I don't think anyone would consider taking an Egyptian mummy and using it to fuel a train anymore. It'd horrify a number of people now.
Do you think the glamorisation of archaeology in the media is a good or a bad thing? Why?Possibly good as it attracts more interest and consequently people and money to the field. Possibly bad in that it isn't an accurate portrayal. Answers to what, why and how of prehistory are slow in revealing themselves.

If I said the word “archaeology”, what would you think of?
Digging, Egypt excavations and those little toothbrushes used to wipe dust off bones.
What period/place in history would you think of?
Probably around the turn of the century, when Egypt first started getting poked around in.
If you could name only one archaeological film/tv show, what would it be?
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
If you could name only one archaeological book, what would it be?
I can't.
Can you name an archaeologist?
Louis Leakey--of course, he's hella dead, but still an arachaeologist.
Can you name a female archaeologist?
Mary Leakey.
Do you think there are any role models to be found in archaeology?
I'm sure they exist, and could impart a lot to the general public, but they're not really role models until more people are aware of them. The only archaeologists I could name did work a long time ago--I can't think of any from the modern age.
Would you ever consider a job in archaeology?
Maybe as a volunteer bone-scrubber, but I don't think I have the patience or dedication to be a bona-fide archaeologist.
Do you consider archaeology glamorous?
Yes.
Do you think what you see in the films/tv/books is an accurate portrayal of what archaeology is really like?
Nope.
Do you think archaeology has changed at all over the past 100 years?
I'm sure it must have, considering that now we've got GPS location, carbon-dating, etc.
Do you think the glamorisation of archaeology in the media is a good or a bad thing? Why?
I think it is always good for a profession that the public knows little about to be explored by the media, however, I think that the misinformation that is presented (ex: all archaeologists wear dashing khaki outfits with lots of pockets) could do more harm than good.

If I said the word “archaeology”, what would you think of?
Digging up bones, dinosaurs, cliffs by rivers in the middle of hot places; pots and bronze daggers
What period/place in history would you think of?
Cambrian or Jurassic/Triassic, I guess
If you could name only one archaeological film/tv show, what would it be?

If you could name only one archaeological book, what would it be?
Now, I know I've read quite a few.. Hmm, does Walking with Dinosaurs (book form) count?
Can you name an archaeologist?
No, which is bad because I've been on a dig with one.
Can you name a female archaeologist?
No.
Do you think there are any role models to be found in archaeology?
The academic dedicated to furthering his field. I think that's kinda noble, to be so dedicated to one thing.
Would you ever consider a job in archaeology?
I did, once. No longer. To busy trying to be a linguist. There's potential for crossover, I guess, so, final answer: Maybe.
Do you consider archaeology glamorous?
No. But I don't like glamour.
Do you think what you see in the films/tv/books is an accurate portrayal of what archaeology is really like?
Nope.
Do you think archaeology has changed at all over the past 100 years?
My gut reaction would be "of course!", if only from a technological standpoint. Plus it's less the purview of bored, rich aristocrats, right?
Do you think the glamorisation of archaeology in the media is a good or a bad thing? Why?
Eh, whatever gets people interested. Really, it's a matter of exposing people who would have never considered a career in the field to the field. In one respect, the glamorisation is bad; it doesn't give them the real picture. But, more importantly, they're inspired to go and find out about the real picture for themselves.

It's basically about a girl who discovers two skeletons in a cave in France, not finished reading it 'cos I got too bogged down in 'real life' and stopped having regular three hour train journeys but it's pretty good. It's fiction, y'know, but the first few chapters are set in the French Pyrenees at an archaeological dig thing.

Do you think there are any role models to be found in archaeology? tony robinson seems to have a genuine passion for teh subject. although Time Team has a bad rep in archealogical circles from what I understand.

Do you consider archaeology glamorous? No, Its mucky, a lot of work and research.
Do you think what you see in the films/tv/books is an accurate portrayal of what archaeology is really like?
depends on which source you are viewing. I think Time team probably shows what a dig could be like, The more fantastical sources like indiana jones, tomb raider and the mummy are probably not representative.
Do you think archaeology has changed at all over the past 100 years? yes, a shift from glorified treasure hunters to people who honestly care about discovering information and preserving relics has occured.
Do you think the glamorisation of archaeology in the media is a good or a bad thing? Why? media glamorisation provides money and resources, it also sources wannabe's and misinformation. Overall its probably a good thing

Do you think what you see in the films/tv/books is an accurate portrayal of what archaeology is really like?
HA! No.
Do you think archaeology has changed at all over the past 100 years?
Yes, it's less geared toward treasure hunting, more toward curiosity.
Do you think the glamorisation of archaeology in the media is a good or a bad thing? Why?
As in Indiana Jones or Jurrasic Park? I don't think it makes much difference, it's all fiction, anyone who thinks that's what it's really like probably hasn't the cognative capacity to open a jam jar.

I wouldn't, because it seems like you have to work hard to find aand uncover things, and you would get dirty/sweaty so I don't think that would be considered glamourous. But it is excitiing when they find new things so in that respect it could be slightly glamourous.
Do you think what you see in the films/tv/books is an accurate portrayal of what archaeology is really like?
I think certain aspects are, but on TV they don't show the length of time and work that it takes to do this job, so I don't think all of it is portrayed.
Do you think archaeology has changed at all over the past 100 years?
I think it has, because they have better equipment and so they're able to discover more.
Do you think the glamorisation of archaeology in the media is a good or a bad thing? Why?
In Jurrassic park I think it was glamourised, and that could be a good thing as it may have got people more interested and aware of archaeology.

If I said the word “archaeology”, what would you think of?Digging, finds, finds processing, trowls, trenches, Flinders Petrie, Egyptology, Indiana Jones, the list is endless really.
What period/place in history would you think of?Ancient (but only because I studied Ancient History and Archaeology) which involves Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Anglo Saxon, Viking, Iron Age (Celts).
If you could name only one archaeological film/tv show, what would it be?Indiana Jones trilogy
If you could name only one archaeological book, what would it be?Archaeology
Can you name an archaeologist?Lots! Famous or not?
Can you name a female archaeologist?Sara-Jane Farr (not famous - I've worked with her)
Do you think there are any role models to be found in archaeology?Yes but not always good ones. Lara Croft and Indiana Jones do not reflect current archaeological practices and most that do are usually fairly boring (i.e. Time Team).
Would you ever consider a job in archaeology?Yep!
Do you consider archaeology glamorous?No.
Do you think what you see in the films/tv/books is an accurate portrayal of what archaeology is really like?See above so no.
Do you think archaeology has changed at all over the past 100 years?YES!!!!!
Do you think the glamorisation of archaeology in the media is a good or a bad thing? Why?Good in a way as it attracts more people to the profession however it doesn't always give an accurate view of what archaeology is about. The films tend to be over glamorised but the TV shows can be quite accurate if not a little staid and boring.

Good luck with it all. I'd be really interested in reading your final findings and dissertation if you don't mind?

P.S.
Jurassic Park strictly speaking is paleontology and not archaeology

Well I don't know him, but isn't SPS about a million feet tall? I would imagine that even the tallest of walls is small potatoes to a person of that kind of stature.

If I said the word “archaeology”, what would you think of?
Digging up, looking for and finding old stuff; foundations; roads; tools; bodies (human and all elese, as well as insects and tiney creatures); jewles; ceramatics; types of things that have been found already, new things that make people (sometimes) know what better happened at a place in time.
What period/place in history would you think of?
Well, aside from the Anciant civilisations, anything really that's older than anyone alive, I guess. To put a time on it, maybe 150 plus years ago. As for place, well- anywhere, Doubt there are many places on earth where there arn't things to be dug up.
If you could name only one archaeological film/tv show, what would it be?
Time Team, thgouh I don't watch it. Mebbe if I had cable I could name some Discovery channel progs too.
If you could name only one archaeological book, what would it be?
Off the top of my head? None sping to mind, but I have a vuage recollection of an acrheology book a friend had on her coffee table some years ago about Egypt (she studied archeology at uni)
Can you name an archaeologist?
The guy who played Baldrick? Seriously, no.
Can you name a female archaeologist?
Nope.
Do you think there are any role models to be found in archaeology?
There are probaly many, I'd think esp those who for their time pushed boundries and all that. If it were an area I was read up on in. Yes, I do thin k there are rle models to be found in archeology, however not being a subject that grabs me, I wouldnt feel them as role models to me,. And no, I don't have any who are.
Would you ever consider a job in archaeology?
I wouldn't not consider it, but my ambitions right now don't include it. Infact, to b e honest th eliklihood of me stumbling into a job in the feild, would be more likely than me aspiring to work in it.
Do you consider archaeology glamorous?
Not particuarly, but then not many jobs are,, or if they are it's only to the people in that area already.
Do you think what you see in the films/tv/books is an accurate portrayal of what archaeology is really like?In ways yes, and in ways no. But it's not something I come across much in what I read and watch, (saw The Mummy Returns, as an example of the last media that was archeoogically based)
Do you think archaeology has changed at all over the past 100 years?
Advances in technology has probably changed it vastly, as well as maybe (to speculate) the, erm.... attitudes/ ideologies/ approaches to archeology. Stuff like remains that have been taken (was an article about some Aboriginal remains that Austrlisa (loosly paraphrsaing) deemeed should be given back from a museaum (think it was British) who contest that they are the only ones of their type and therefore the mudeaum should be allowed them). I guess ethics must of changed.
Do you think the glamorisation of archaeology in the media is a good or a bad thing? Why?
To shed light on archeology I would expect a good thing- opening up people's minds. But as to wheather it's a fair representation of what archelogy is, and how it is cnoducted, I dunno.

Indiana Jones, Nazis, biblical stuff, Han Solo
I feel so embarrased that I didn't remember Indiana "Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side" Jones.
But when I think about it, Tony Robinson's the better archaeologist. If he ever found the Holy Grail, he wouldn't go dropping it into the first earthquake he came across. Instead, he'd clean it with tiny brushes.
Way more archeological.

How far through did you get? Does it actually have anything archaeology like in it? I wanna know if I should go and buy this book toput in my literature review or not

Would you ever consider a job in archaeology?
I would
Do you consider archaeology glamorous?
Nah! it's muddy.

Do you think what you see in the films/tv/books is an accurate portrayal of what archaeology is really like?
Yes and no. It will give you an idea of the basic cause they have to portary that to make it obvious the person an archaeologist but after that no because films and books are ment to be dramatic to keep your interest and Time team has a time limit again to keep interested.
Do you think archaeology has changed at all over the past 100 years?
Yes lots cause of computers and metal detector and other gadgets.
Do you think the glamorisation of archaeology in the media is a good or a bad thing? Why?
Good in some ways. It's got more people interested which inevitably means more funding to pay for the digs etc.

Would you ever consider a job in archaeology?
Nope.
Do you consider archaeology glamorous?
Nope.
Do you think what you see in the films/tv/books is an accurate portrayal of what archaeology is really like?
Nope
Do you think archaeology has changed at all over the past 100 years?
Most definitely- looking back at the victorians and how they would just dig up things, to now how the archaeologists map out different layers of whatever they are digging up. Also, they have electro-magnetic mapping machines which allow them to make educated and informed guesses as to where the best place to dig would be, instead of just starting where they feel like.
Do you think the glamorisation of archaeology in the media is a good or a bad thing? Why?
Good thing because it is a field (no pun intended) which needs to be glamourised for the general public to take an interest- if it wasn't, people just wouldn't care.
