I thought I might make a thread based on all your favorites. TV shows, movies, books, bands, etc.
Here are a few of mine: (note these are not definite, I usually have a few favorites of everything... wink.gif )
Movie: Pulp Fiction
Band: Dream Theater
Book: The Tomorrow Series (John Marsden)
TV Show: Top Gear
Game: probz TES:IV Oblivion

Those are a few, feel free to post as many times to add more types of favorites. smile.gif

Ok, decided to elaborate.

Movie: Sci fi/ horror

Band: Well, if I'm honest, anything I like, I don't like particular bands, I like songs.

Book: 1984- It really made me think...

TV show: hmm, I don't watch much TV at the moment, mainly because I'm pre-occupied with video games.

Game: The Legend of Zelda (the whole series) The games have good storylines, and a good formula. There's also the bonus of something new in every game.

Guys, I think this thread has potential, but only if you put a bit more content into your posts. I've never heard of Alpha Road. Tell me about them. And why is Pulp Fiction your favourite film?

As for me:

Filmwise, I like movies that really mess with your sense of reality. Like Memento, where the film's framing device echoes the main character's condition, so that you never know what's just happened. Or Adaptation which blurs the line between script and reality. Or The Nines, which messes with you on just about every level. I also like films that go for witty or clever instead of outright comedy, like Juno, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Brick.

As far as music goes it is no secret that I am a massive emo nerd. And I do mean nerd; I've got books on it. I know its history, its themes and I die a little inside whenever anyone confuses emo with goth or thinks that emo is just about being depressed because the girl you like is totally making out with that other guy. Absolute top favourite bands include Jimmy Eat World, Brand New and The Appleseed Cast.

Stephen Chbosky's The Perks of Being A Wallflower is currently my favourite book, but that might just be because it was the last book I read. It is very emo. The main character gets depressed because this girl he likes totally makes out with some other guy. You see how despite not being identical, these two things are not incompatible?

Aaron Sorkin writes the best TV. He did The West Wing and Studio 60 on Sunset Strip. Also Sports Night, but I haven't seen much of that. In fact, I'm highly tempted to get it now. Hmm. Anyway, yes. I am also a big Joss Whedon fan - Buffy, Angel and Firefly are all favourites of mine. Last year I rewatched all of Buffy and I for certain didn't cry at all. Especially not during the season 5 episode "The Body".

For Games, it is all about the storyline. You can make graphics as beautiful as you like and gameplay as smooth as - almost made a swear then - silk but I'd rather play a borked game with a good story (ie. Mass Effect) than something beautifully bland (ie. Prey). Tim Schafer, Bill Roper and Feargus Urquhart are names that get me excited.

hmm.. I'll try to elaborate a bit, but I'm not sure I can do much better than "I like this because it is awesome" unsure.gif

Movie:
It's hard to choose a single favourite. I'm a big fan of memento as well. Another one I like is Primer, which is about 2 guys who build a time machine, cause I love the films that mess with your head too and its just really cleverly done. Others include Run Lola Run, The Prestige, Battle Royale.

Band:

thats easy: Pixies has been my favourite band since I first started listening to music, even though my tastes have changed quite a bit. More recently I've been listening to a lot Tegan and Sara. I saw them live a couple of weeks ago and they were awesome. According to my last.fm I've also listened to a lot of Ladytron, The Go! Team, and Mew.

Book:
It takes me forever to get through books and my memory sucks, so I don't remember anything well enough to choose a favourite. The best book I read recently was Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. I recommend it to anyone who's a big nerd like me. biggrin.gif Right now I'm reading his "The Baroque Cycle" series which is really really long.

TV Show:
I think Futurama is my favourite. Followed closely by Father Ted, Black Books, and Spaced (all excellent examples of british comedy)

I'm addicted to lost at the moment despite how ridiculous it's gotten. I loved the first season of Heroes as well, but the 2nd one (cut short by the writers' strike) was a bit rubbish. I also enjoyed Dexter, which is about a serial killer who works for the police and is also a really a nice guy! Oh and the reimagined battlestar galactica (I've never seen the original). And firefly, obviously.

Game:
System Shock 2. I think I prefer a good story to good gameplay as well, but ss2 has both. And scary hybrids who sneak up on you when you're hacking security systems. I've had that happen so many times and it always makes me jump and shake my mouse, making me look at the floor, which is rather unhelpful when being attacked by horrible monsters.

Insanely awesome band with an insanely awesome, like, really awesome guitar player, Tim. <3

I'll most likely reply to the other questions when I get home, I think my teacher has the idea I'm not doing world maths day right now...

Movie: I think it would have to be Waking Life. It's a rotoscoped film about this guy who is constantly in a dream and just wanders about having deep philosophical discussions with people. It is pretty amazing.
Band: Chihiro. They are a five-piece from Norwich, now London, who make lovely folky happy music with clever lyrics. I first saw them in 2005 and I am still in love with their music! I also love the B-52's. They have done SO much more than just Love Shack and it is all wonderfully weird and cool and dancable. And The Guillemots. I love them. I guess you could sum up my music taste as "New Wave", mainly because the term is so inclusive of lots of different bands. I hate Bloc Party and "Indie" as a scene.
Book: The Day Of The Triffids. I'm not really sure why I love this book so much, but I find that I can read it over and over and still be excited, shocked, moved etc. I also LOVE The Time Traveler's Wife, and I am not going to tell you what it is about. Instead, you should read it.
TV Show: Arabel and Mortimer
Game: Mahjong.
CrazyFooIAintGettinOnNoPlane
hmm chihiro are pretty good...

and yeah waking life is indeed amazing. A Scanner Darkly is pretty good too (same director, same style, based on the book by Philip K. Dick).

Being highly indicisive, this could pose some problems...

Movie: One which makes you think afterwards and leaves you with a new perspective. However, all the movies which spring to mind have been based on books, where the books could provide more to think about and a greater perspective. Hence, I'm going to say The Blues Brothers because it had great music and was deliciously surreal and funny.

Band: Oh Christ. Ok, either Radiohead, Muse or Coldplay. NOT because they are my faovurite to listen to, but I reckon that due to the sheer mass of music they have each produced and the large majority being very good they are the 'three masters' of modern music, much like J.S. Bach, D. Scarlatti and Handel in the Baroque period (although obviously they are nowhere near as great).

Book: The Black Violin by Maxence Fermine or Snow by Orhan Pamuk. I'm not sure why, they have beautiful connotations in my mind and conjure lovely colours and shapes.

TV Show: University Challenge because I love how intelligent and sexist Jeremy Paxman is. He's great. It's also fun trying to guess the answers and getting maybe one right in the whole show.

Game: I'm gonna say Bats, because it /was/ my childhood. Or maybe KH2, because it was quite fun.

I think I should probably redo my post.

Movie: Pulp Fiction. I love that movie because it is very clever and it has so many of those things, allusions I think they're called. Also I love the acting. I always get a good laugh from it aswell/

Band: Dream Theater. They are a progressive rock/metal band. They are very skilled, the musicians in that band are world class. But it's not just the insanely cool skill show off-ing, I love they're music because it is very involving and sometimes quite beautiful. Also, their songs have a tendency to be quite long.

Book(s): The Tomorrow Series. I love this series because it shows the reader people in an unlikely situation (the country is invaded by terrorists but they are not caught) and shows how they survive and how they cope with things (like with losing their homes, having to kill people and their closest loved ones dying). The whole series spans across about 8 months, and in this time, you see numerous relationships form, and break and you see how their mistakes can have very large consequences. A very involving and emotional read.

Game: The Elder Scrolls IV : Oblivion. I love this game because yes, it is very pretty, but I love the ability to just go around the world and do whatever, choose how I make money, choose how and who I fight and stuff like that. I think that it is very fun.

TV Show: Top Gear. I really like this show for the great humor and recurring jokes and such. Also how they do some very big, fun things just to answer a question, and for entertainment.

That's about it. Of course, i don't think I could easily say any of these are my above all favorites, there are any more up there with those, but these I think are generally my favorite. wink.gif

You should watch a film called Go. Pulp Fiction was a huge influence on a lot of films, and this is one of them. It's several interlinking stories of teenagers/twentysomethings trying to have a good time one night and was written by one of my favourite Screenwriters, John August.

Blimey... Someone else who has seen Primer! Now there's something that I don't see every day. It's a very clever story, but it might just be bit a bit too clever - the complexity gets in the way of it being a very successful or satisfying narrative. As a feat of ingenuity and planning it's wonderful, I do really like it, but it requires so much effort by the audience that I can't help but think that maybe it would be a better film if you didn't have to watch it ten times and read the (enormous) online guide before it begins to make sense.

Run Lola Run is great. Clever, funny, innovative. Lovely stuff.

The Prestige is almost the opposite end of the Primer spectrum of clever films. You get it all shown to you (pretty much) and it's almost unsatisfying because so much is explained. I think it gets away with it, but I know many people who would rather not have known everything because they felt it spoilt the story. I love it, but I can see why people wouldn't too.

Battle Royale - great film, but I'm not sure it would get on my 'top films' list.

I've got a list of favourites already prepared (it's on my CV because I apply in creative industries and gives a talking point in interviews) but it would take a while to explain and I'm off to bed. I'll post it another time, I just wanted to say how interesting I thought these choices were!

I like Primer. I like it because you have to watch it more than once to understand it, and it has lots of clever little details that make you go "OOhhhhh.... I get it now". A bit like Donnie Darko: if you can, watch it about three or four times, then watch it a fifth time with the director's commentary on. You suddenly figure out what is going on so much better.

I forgot to say! The Science Of Sleep, by Michel Gondry is also a favourite. I wish I had the ability of that man, I really really do- I know he was going into his own head and displaying the contents through a very surreal and amazing film, but it was as though he was going through my head too. The ending made me cry, the middle made me go ": O WOW!" and the beginning made me sit on the edge of the sofa and listen intently.

Movie: Sean of the Dead!!!1!1!one!!!! Igt's such a genius movie, it's one of those ones you can actually say that you would do the things that happen in this movie if zombies attacked your city. The start of a beautiful match up for movies with Nick Frost & Simon Pegg.

Band: The Vines, oone of the best bands out, you all should know Ride even if you didn't know it was them, they're working on a new album and I can't wait to hear it!

Book: Boy Solier Series by Andy McNab, 17yo goes spy. Not original but a very well written book.

TV Show: Skins. a show for teenagers couldn't be better, love to do some of the things that happen in this show.

Game: Warcraft III, This is one of the best Blizzard games ever, it pretty much was the original WoW offline. The cinematics were way ahead of it's time and I still have to see better in today's games.
CrazyFooIAintGettinOnNoPlane
ooh I've thought of another tv show I like!
It's called Jericho - it's about what happens to a bunch of people in a small town in america (called Jericho) when nuclear bombs explode all over the country. Unfortunately the show got cancelled, but the first series is excellent.

I see your point with Primer, but I still think its a pretty enjoyable film even if you can't keep up with the details of the story. I don't think it would be as good if it was more straight forward. I guess I just like really confusing films! Last xmas I rewatched it with some friends and we spent about an hour arguing about some minor detail of how the time machine worked. biggrin.gif

I'm interested in seeing what films you've listed in your CV...
Candllis
Movie: Augh, that one is hard. I love a lot of movies. Either Amelie, Office Space, Fight Club, American Beauty, or Wag the Dog. Or 11:14. Or...hmm. Does the really long miniseries of Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth count as one movie? unsure.gif Probably Amelie, if I had to choose only one.

Band: My first thought was The Wet Spots. They are freaking hilarious. Even if the song Texas Annie is no longer relevant.

Book: The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle has been my favorite for years. Probably at least partially due to happy childhood memories surrounding it, but it's also beautifully written. A close second is probably Everything is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer. It's strange and funny and heartbreaking. I do not share Becky's enthusiasm for The Time Traveller's Wife, but she knows that already. wink.gif

TV Show: Either Buffy or Firefly. It depends on the day. Firefly would probably win if it had more episodes, because then I could rewatch it more often without running the risk of memorizing it. Angel is also good, but not as great as the other two. I recently fell in love with Pushing Daisies, but with only 9 episodes so far I can hardly call it my favorite.

Game: If we're talking video games, then Final Fantasy VII is probably still my favorite. For card/board games it has to be Munchkin.
Novander
-TheKasbah-: Not Even. I think with the exception of WoW itself, every Blizzard game was better than WarCraft III. I'm not saying it's a bad game, but compare it with StarCraft, either of the Diablos or its two ancestors, and it comes up with Epic Fail.

Crazymat: Jericho was written by Stephen Chbosky, author of The Perks of being a Wallflower. If you liked his TV stuff, maybe you should read his book? I don't know; I haven't seen Jericho yet. All I can say is that Perks is a fantastic piece of awesome.

Cand: You are wrong.

Daria: You are right. The Time Traveler's Wife rocks out hard.

Everybody: Primer went way over my head, but I've only watched it the once so I don't mind not following it at the moment.
Candllis
Nov: No, I'm not. The characters are flat, cliched, and self-centered. It's not a story about love, it's a very self-satisfied and pretentious story about obsession. It also gives off an icky pedo vibe at several points. If I wanted a shallow couple who were impossibly perfect and babbled endlessly about how in love they were I'd read a Harlequin Romance.

Ahem. Sorry. I really, really hated that book. Really.
