I've become really into techno music lately but only know one band so far that I like, Daft Punk. Anyone know of some good techno bands/songs?

Sorry.

You could try typing in Techo on Limewire? I mean... YouTube 'techo' and then buy songs you like off of iTunes.

Not a problem, it was just a couple of clicks. wink.gif
I have a hard time finding good techno - I don't know if Dune counts, but I Can't Stop Raving is one of my favorites.

I don't know...the buying bit dosn't seem right and I dont have YouTube. Itunes, then limewire.

Use ironyimpact.com for YouTube? It worked at school for a while, and their filter it pretty good, so it might work for you.

The site donsn't exsist, did you misspell it or something?
Izzy
Relatively sure that's how you spell it. It could be down.

Orbital, Crystal Method, Chemical Brothers?

Erm... oh and Underworld!

Ok, have fun.

Navigate to the pages of those bands listed and you'll be able to listen to some of their stuff.

Sliiiide in a little LCD Soundsystem in there too. Not exactly techno, but delicious all the same.
Moosh
Ricardo Villalobos

(music types: does he count as techno? I'm not sure, but he's awesome and you should be listening to him anyway)
Eli
Thank you all for...names I've never heard of, I'll try them out though.
CrazyFooIAintGettinOnNoPlane
have a look at Daft punk's similar artists on last.fm: http://www.last.fm/music/Daft+Punk/+similar
Daria
Oh that's a point- Justice! They're fantastic. As are Vitallic (Poney Part I especially). Good call, Crazymat!

The Prodigy - Music For A Jilted Generation is an absolute classic.

'Techno' is a pretty broad church, so can you say more precisely what sort of thing you're looking for?
Eli
Well more of a beat then a song with lyrics. Something kinda upbeat, does that help?

sorry, spam. I'll go.

Well, definitely get that Prodigy album then. I like 'Far from the maddening crowds' by Chicane, but it might be a bit baleric for most people's tastes. 'Exit Planet Dust' by the Chemical Brothers would be a good choice too.

See if you can get the soundtrack to Wipeout 2097 (the computer game). It's got a selection of stuff on there by different artists and it might help you refine the sort of thing you're looking for.

Yes. 'Jilted Generation' is one of the few absolutely perfect dance albums out there. I'd add Basement Jaxx's 'Remedy' for something a bit housier, and Pendulum's 'Hold Your Colour' for a drum & bass flavour. In fact, combine the first and last of these and enjoy this almighty bastardo.

For individual tracks, you need to at least hear Air War by Crystal Castles - it's a damn peach. Odd fan vid, though...

Techno is a tricky one. As a genre, it's in rude health, but I think what you're broadly after is these days under the electronica umbrella.

Claro Intellecto and Matthew Dear's Audion alias will do you for actual techno, and I've been enjoying some Move D off the internets recently. You'd probably do well to check out anything on Spectral.

If you're enjoying Daft Punk, I will echo the recommendations of Prodigy, Justice and Crystal Castles. For Chemical Brothers, I'd recommend Dig Your Own Hole and Surrender over Exit Planet Dust, but that's just me.

You may find plenty to enjoy by 65daysofstatic, on account of them being simply awesome. Also, Battles, who are the perfect electronic/rock/jazz hybrid.

My favourite electronic record last year was Moog Acid, a collaboration between 60s pioneer Jean-Jacques Perrey and Cornish legend Luke Vibert. I'd call that essential listening.

And then there's the Warpening; your essential albums are
Richard D James Album - Aphex Twin
Hard Normal Daddy
Big Loada
Go Plastic
Hello Everything - Squarepusher (not the complete catalogue, but the most accessible releases)
For Beginner Piano - Plone
Music Has The Right To Children
Geogaddi - Boards of Canada
Empty the Bones of You
Body Riddle - (Chris) Clark

If you can ever get your hands on an album called My Mines I by Kristuit Salu Vs Morris Nightingale, do. It should be easy to download, but trickier to get an actual physical copy. Anyway, it's blinding.

Oh, and finally, hit up 8bitpeoples for awesome 8-bit/Game Boy/chiptune downloads. Just use them responsibly, unlike Crystal Castles.

Ooh. Ouch. Like, really? Really really? I mean, if we're separating out whole genres into "good" and "bad", which in itself is a concept I have serious problems with, the best you could come up with was "post-emo"?

These also come with my seal of approval. May I also suggest tracking down the very-reasonably priced Rephlex samplers? 'Braindance Coincidence' rocked my socks when I first heard it.

My all-time favourite band is definitely Future Sound Of London, which count as electronica, but I suspect might not fit into the 'techno' description if Daft Punk appeal.

DD, good call on The Chemical Bros: 'Dig Your Own Hole' is their best album and was the one I meant to type if it wasn't for random neurones being out playing tennis.

A few tracks by Orbital that are worth finding: Belfast, Halcyon, Style. My personal favourite album is 'Middle of Nowhere', but general consensus seems to prefer 'In Sides'.

They have lyrics, but Faithless have done some good floorfillers over the years and I think they're worth a look (although in moderation because they can be a bit samey).

Yeah, mine too! Good times. And I think it was the Rephlexions comp that made me go out and get Super-User by Yee King, which is a bloody wonderful little album.

Yes. I was saying that emo is objectively good and that techno is, equally, objectively bad and that you are all bad people for listening to it. That is exactly what I was doing. I am, as you can tell, quite stupid and unaware that taste is entirely subjective. My post was to be taken completely seriously and well done you for spotting that.
Doctor Doom
Well, good. I'm glad you're so freely able to admit your failings. In a way, I'm almost proud of you.
Daria
Hi fives on the Battles suggestion. I remember watching them play Atlas on Later with Jools Holland, and no one in the studio really knowing what was going on. It was awesome. Needless to say they were only allowed to play one song.

Sounds a lot like when At The Drive-In performed 'One Armed Scissor' on the same prog. At least one guitar was lost during the song, and summarily replaced with a tambourine - genius in itself. After the turmoil, the camera caught the face of the following act - Robbie Williams, as it happens - and the look on his face was an absolute picture. There are some performances that just aren't worth following. Roll credits, and goodnight.

'Atlas' is a great song, by the way. There is full agreement here. But what about this?
Doctor Doom
I think my endorphin production hit untold levels trying to recover from that one the first time I heard it. Loved it, obviously. The whole of Higgins is fantastic.

My birthday a couple of years ago, a friend thought 7am was the perfect time to Dance Like You're Selling Nails. It was not. (This was after he spent most of the night thinking that The Holy Bible was an excellent party album. It's a wonder I didn't set fire to him.)
Industrial Kybosh
Hah! Sounds like my kind of party...
Eli
Thanks again everyone, some real weird music here but its cool all the same. The only band I didnt really like thogh was Orbital...and LCD soundsystem; not really into it.
Mata
You didn't like Orbital? I think that's a sin in some holy books. I guess it sounds a bit old fashioned these days, but 'Belfast' just never gets old! How very odd.
