Full Version: Telescope Meet!
The Other Side forums - suitable for mature readers! > The Other Side forums > Daily life
elphaba2
OK. So. Team. Something amazing! There is a magical telescope (shh don't tell me how it works, it's magic) that connects London and Brooklyn. I live right next to Brooklyn (if right next means a five minute bike ride, thirty minute train and forty minute subway) and I think that we should organize a wave-off.

Who is London-bound--and for that matter, who is NY-bound--and wants to make a crazy expedition of this? It closes on June 15th, which is soon!

So team. Who is pro-telescope (and pro-MAGIC)? I know I am!
I_am_the_best
I live London!

I haven't clicked the link! I'm still excited! And merry! Pro-telescopia!
Izzy
I want to! They should build a magical telescope in Orlando. sad.gif
Cath
Sound like a damn good reason for a meet to me. Pitty there's no way I can afford to get to London sad.gif
CheeseMoose
AWESOME!

But I'm not gonna be able to get to London in that time. Or New York.

Some people should do it though!
monkey_called_narth
It would atleast be fun for the rest of us to watch?
Smiler
Cutting it close perhaps but on Saturday 14th June I have an exam I'm organising in South Ken, London. It's over at 12 and would only take a little bit of time to get to Tower Bridge.

NYC is 5 hours behind LDN so to be nice I'd suggest a tele-meet would probably have to be about 4pm + UK time and I don't know if you can be heard so you'd need to bring some cue card type devises...

Might be up for it wink.gif
Daria
Definitely up for it! I'm not going to be around this weekend, but can do most times after 5pm GMT (well, BST) when I finish work. Yay!
QUOTE
Yo London! June 5th? June 7th? June 9th? June 12th? Let's peek through a telescope at each other!

I can do any of those dates bar the 7th. I have whiteboard and pens at the ready biggrin.gif

Elphaba- when's the best day/ time for you?
spiffilicious05
I'll be in London on the 5th!!!! Then off to some random villages =)
elphaba2
The fifth works for me. How does London feel about meeting past 8? I can't get to Brooklyn till 2:30 at the earliest.

Also, we should send them an email full of lies, to bump the line. They describe this thing on the website where if you have a good enough reason, they'll let you cut ahead for a particular time. I think I want to propose to someone---Daria? Spiffi? We should spend our lives together.
Daria
I'm cool meeting past 8! Is it open 24/7?

And oh hai baby, what's up? Sure I'll marry you happy.gif
hinsley
jsut casue i got bored so was lookin at it, id like ot say it costs £1 per person ion the London side.!!

And apparently Yes, it is open 24/7 except for this bit of writing:

QUOTE
'Please note The Telectroscopes will be closed to the general public for a short period on the following dates while schools in London and New York visit:

* Wednesday June 4
* Friday June 6
* Monday June 9
* Tuesday June 10
* Thursday June 12

All visits take place 9:30 – 10:30 (New York timings) / 14:30 – 15:30 (London timings)'

and yes, i am reather tired so ignore my lack of proper tsalkingness biggrin.gif
Daria
Noted, but should be cool if we're gwan meet about 8pmish. You going to come down and have a poke? biggrin.gif
spiffilicious05
This is too cool, especially since I'm from ny -- I can wave to my people back home =)
Smiler
Duckflaps! Working on the 5th and that exam on the 14th I have to invigilate will bring me up in time ot go to my cousin's emigration goodbye party. Gonna have to bail either way it seems sad.gif
elphaba2
Rats, no Smiler! Ah, well. Next time there's an international telescope rolling through town.

OK, so should we plan for arriving at the telescope at 3:30/8:30? I have no clue what the lines will be like, which is a little disconcerting...maybe I can prop up a whiteboard at the bottom of the screen thing that gives amy status (fifteenth in line, sixth in line, next on line) for the london matazins waiting? See, this is where an iPhone would come in handy.

IATB, you should come! Daria and Spiff, I'll see you tomorrow!
I_am_the_best
Unfortunately both today and tomorrow I am covered in exams. But have much fun!
Daria
Elphaba, if you want to PM me your mobile number, then maaaaybe it might be possible to text you/ each other with status updates. I wonder how much that costs?
*after a while of looking it up*
Apparently I can text to any of these networks: Acc Dobson Cellular (Dobson Cellular)
Airtouch-Paging (Verizon Paging)
Cellular One (Dobson Net)(Dobson Cellular)
Cingular Blue (AT&T Wireless)
Clearnet (Telus Mobility)
Sprint
Telefonica Puerto Rico(Movistar)
Verizon Wireless
for 20p. Which might be useful?
elphaba2
Sprint! I am loath to lose you almost half an american dollar per text, but that is the network I have. Number PM'd--I suppose text me with your place in line and a time estimate when you've arrived at the magical telescope and I will do the same (it only costs me 15c per message--weird. That is cheaper than 411.)

...I can't find a whiteboard. Sharpie and pad will have to do.
candice
Just in case you didn't know/your mobile companies' websites didn't tell you: Daria will need to put 00 1 before elphaba's number, and elphaba will need to put 011 44 before Daria's and omit the zero that Brits put at the beginning of all their phone numbers. So if Daria PMs with her number as 0755555555, elphaba would need to put it in as 011 44 755555555. I wouldn't rely on just getting Daria's number when she texts rather than through a PM ahead of time, because in my experience they get weirdly mangled when texting overseas.

Also, I'm jealous. It costs me 50p to text my sisters in the US!
Daria
Awesome advice, thank you Cand biggrin.gif
See you at 8:30ish Elphaba!
hinsley
oh oh take pics or something!!! i wanna see happy.gif

me = nosy o_O
Daria
Really quite odd.
Apologies for rubbishy pictures! and the one at the end is a sculpture we saw on the way home by David Kemp, called The Navigators.

It was fun biggrin.gif
Cath
Hehe cool the telescope has a bit of a Steampunk feel going on. I'm guessing that somewhere in the fuzz that was the view through the scope was an Elphaba?
Mata
That's very cool. I want one in my garden. So, did you manage to co-ordinate enough to see each other? It looks tricky with the queue...
Daria
Cath- it was very Steampunk. I made sure I wore a belt that would co-ordinate.

We got to wave Hai! at one another, and explain why Wytu and I were late >_> and then I called her because it was faster than writing notes on paper/ whiteboard. Elphaba looked a bit like Bob Dylan when she was going through pages of words biggrin.gif
Industrial Kybosh
*dimly related link spam*

Sounds like a good time was had by all. My jealousy knows no bounds. I want a magical steampunk telescope!

/notes - good band name idea...
elphaba2
The concept was really cool, but it was indeed very difficult to write. And I could never tell if Daria could read it, with little help from the hyperactive Southasian woman next to me who kept hitting on the Londoners.

But still very cool! And what a nice day! And my gosh, some parts of Brooklyn are crazy beautiful and have $2 million apartments and have people who look at you funny for wearing a tube top on a nice day. The things that one can learn!

(I have pictures, but none of London. It's like Matazone's own version of the telectroscope, except not interactive in the slightest. Perhaps they will be up later tonight?)
