Anyway, I'm sick of browsing through random on my mp3 player while driving, so I was going to compile playlists. The thing is, I need suggestions for good driving music. I am sure the gurus of matazone have suggestions

I don't know if you love or hate nickelback (Actually, I can't stand most of their music)
but the song "Animals" by them is *amazing* to drive to.

Paticuarly if you like going fast.

I've done a lot of research into this, seeing as I've done a lot of driving down the years, and I can safely say that you need to drive to something which is going to trigger your "Yes, I'm alert!" circuits. Which means no ballady stuff, no ambient and definitely no Sigur Rós (see random music thread).

If you want to be alert and on the ball you need something uptempo, either rock or dance music tends to fit the bill. Unfortunately most of this stuff also has a tendency to make your right foot a bit leaden, so you need to keep an eye open for those Gatso's. Any fast rock, such as the Foo's or their ilk will do, as will Status Quo - no, seriously, once it kicks into the synapses you suddenly find yourself being the target of the local traffic officer.

Well, this will be one Media thread I won't be able to participate in. I've been a dedicated pedestrian for years now, and I don't see that changing.

I will second this. Getting stuck in traffic where you need to pay more attention than changing a CD allows when you have 'Takk' in is a bad, bad thing. Especially when you hate the radio as much as I do.

I will also second pretty much all the recommendations that have already been made. Here are a few of my favourites:

If you like walking fast without realizing that you are walking fast, try music that makes you righteously angry, like Atmosphere does for me. I think you don't like rap though, so maybe the Germs? I walked two stupidly hilly miles today with Atmosphere and it took me eighteen minutes.

Strolling, however, calls for happy happy music: Moonbabies, some Animal Collective maybe, the Books' "Motherless Bastard", the soundtrack to Amelie.

I'm not being very helpful but I can't think of much as I listened to the Mighty Boosh on the way to work and therefore have no music spinning around my brain recess!

Ah, the lost art of self perambulation. I recall doing that a lot in my youth, wandering around with my Walkman on full volume, belting out whatever it was I'd managed to drop onto cassette that week through a set of 'phones the like of which I've not seen in many years. Although the day I was walking to my friend's house listening to Queen's "Night At The Opera" album was not one of my best journeys, as I was so involved in absorbing the tuneage I completely missed the fact I was walking into some scaffolding; the next thing I recall was lying on the floor with a sore head...

I gave up the Walkman when the school strikes started and it became more sensible to cycle to school instead, and more sensible still to be able to hear the traffic. It was practically impossible to get home, have lunch and get back again in an hour, when the round trip took 80 minutes on foot.
