I'm sure this topic has been done before but either way I think it's time for a new one! Anyway, I'm sick of browsing through random on my mp3 player while driving, so I was going to compile playlists. The thing is, I need suggestions for good driving music. I am sure the gurus of matazone have suggestions biggrin.gif
Novander
I don't drive, so this isn't quite what you asked but:

R.E.M. - Drive
Funeral for a Friend - She Drove Me To Daytime Television
Hell Is For Heroes - You Drove Me To It
Thursday - Understanding In A Car Crash
Gary Numan - Cars
Circa Survive - Stop The F****' Car
The All-American Rejects - Drive Away
A Thorn For Every Heart* - Streetcar
Jimmy Eat World - Night Drive
Brand New - The No Seatbelt Song

I should stop before I start going through all my CDs looking for relevant tracks.

*I am yet to find a band with a more emo name

I don't know if you love or hate nickelback (Actually, I can't stand most of their music)
but the song "Animals" by them is *amazing* to drive to. smile.gif

Paticuarly if you like going fast.

I've done a lot of research into this, seeing as I've done a lot of driving down the years, and I can safely say that you need to drive to something which is going to trigger your "Yes, I'm alert!" circuits. Which means no ballady stuff, no ambient and definitely no Sigur Rós (see random music thread).

If you want to be alert and on the ball you need something uptempo, either rock or dance music tends to fit the bill. Unfortunately most of this stuff also has a tendency to make your right foot a bit leaden, so you need to keep an eye open for those Gatso's. Any fast rock, such as the Foo's or their ilk will do, as will Status Quo - no, seriously, once it kicks into the synapses you suddenly find yourself being the target of the local traffic officer.

If you want a list, then try some of these ones (in no particular order) which can do the job just nicely:

Foo Fighters - Breakout / Monkeywrench / Stacked Actors
Arctic Monkeys - Brianstorm
The Chameleons - Don't Fall
Feeder - Just A Day
The Black Crows - Hard To Handle
Queens Of The Stone Age - You Think I Ain't Worth A Dollar, But I Feel Like A Millionaire / No One Knows
The Darkness - I Believe In A Thing Called Love (this is essential listening for any Matazonian of old!)
Dillinger Escape Plan - Pig Latin (as is this!)
The Buzzcocks - Orgasm Addict / Ever Fallen In Love
Beastie Boys - Fight For Your Right
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Suck My Kiss
Ministry - Stigmata
Queen - Don't Stop Me Now
The Prodigy - Out Of Space
Rage Against The Machine - Killing In The Name Of / Bombtrack
Eels - Last Stop: This Town
Klaxons - Gravity's Rainbow
Pop Will Eat Itself - Beaver Patrol
Faith No More - We Care A Lot / Introduce Yourself
Deep Purple - Smoke On The Water
Hüsker Dü - Crystal
Wedding Present - Why Are You Being So Reasonable Now?
The Jam - just get the greatest hits album, it's all good
The Stranglers - No More Heroes
The Killers - All These Things I've Done
Blur - Song 2
The Wonder Stuff - Don't Let Me Down, Gently
Muse - New Born
Whitesnake - Fool For Your Lovin'
The Clash - Rock The Casbah / London Calling
Electric Light Orchestra - Mr. Blue Sky (seriously, trust me on this one)
The Wombats - Moving To New York
The Futureheads - Beggining Of The Twist
Megadeth - Hangar 18
Pendulum - Slam
Phil Lynott & Gary Moore - Out In The Fields
Kasabian - Shoot The Runner
Green Day - Basket Case
Supergrass - Pumping On Your Stereo
U2 - Vertigo / Elevation / New Year's Day
The Hives - Missing Link
INXS - Need You Tonight
Ultraviolence - I Am Destructor (Mata did an anim to this song)
Guns N Roses - Welcome To The Jungle
Oasis - Cigarettes and Alcohol
Machine Head - Davidian

Meh, that'll do for now.

And following Novander's path:
Chris Rea - Road to Hell
Ministry - Jesus Built My Hotrod
Incubus - Drive
EvilSpoon
Porcupine Tree - Blackest Eyes
Zox - Carolyn
Mountain Goats - This Year
Atom and his Package - Going to Georgia

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Weapon of Choice
Black Stone Cherry - Hell and High Water
Call & Response - Blowin' Bubbles
Blonde Redhead - Loved Despite of Great Faults
Metric - Combat Baby
John Vanderslice - Pale Horse
Bright Eyes - Train Under Water

Halfday - My Life in a Jar

Well, this will be one Media thread I won't be able to participate in. I've been a dedicated pedestrian for years now, and I don't see that changing.

If, however, you need a list of good walking tunes, I'm your man. wink.gif

I will second this. Getting stuck in traffic where you need to pay more attention than changing a CD allows when you have 'Takk' in is a bad, bad thing. Especially when you hate the radio as much as I do.

I will also second pretty much all the recommendations that have already been made. Here are a few of my favourites:

Coheed & Cambria (pretty much anything by them is good by me)
Saves the Day - Third Engine
My Chemical Romance - Vampires Will Never Hurt You
Jimmy Eat World - The Middle/Sweetness
Raven-Mad
Mine would be totally random!! Anything by Meat Loaf or the Phantom of the Opera or MCR

I'll give it a good long think tonight and come back with a walking playlist - and a new thread to celebrate - on the morrow.

Oh, I'll have my strut on, that's for sure...

If you like walking fast without realizing that you are walking fast, try music that makes you righteously angry, like Atmosphere does for me. I think you don't like rap though, so maybe the Germs? I walked two stupidly hilly miles today with Atmosphere and it took me eighteen minutes.

Strolling, however, calls for happy happy music: Moonbabies, some Animal Collective maybe, the Books' "Motherless Bastard", the soundtrack to Amelie.

Gary Numan - Cars

The Fear Factory version wink.gif

I suggest Born in the USA by Brucey

Also, anything with lots of wailing guitar rifts and excellent drum/base lines.

I'm not being very helpful but I can't think of much as I listened to the Mighty Boosh on the way to work and therefore have no music spinning around my brain recess! biggrin.gif

Ah, the lost art of self perambulation. I recall doing that a lot in my youth, wandering around with my Walkman on full volume, belting out whatever it was I'd managed to drop onto cassette that week through a set of 'phones the like of which I've not seen in many years. Although the day I was walking to my friend's house listening to Queen's "Night At The Opera" album was not one of my best journeys, as I was so involved in absorbing the tuneage I completely missed the fact I was walking into some scaffolding; the next thing I recall was lying on the floor with a sore head... wacko.gif

I gave up the Walkman when the school strikes started and it became more sensible to cycle to school instead, and more sensible still to be able to hear the traffic. It was practically impossible to get home, have lunch and get back again in an hour, when the round trip took 80 minutes on foot.

Yeah, I kinda zoned out on that one, didn't I?

Given that I enjoy a good strut when I'm walking (given that I am, of course, a '70s pimp), I often favour these:

Trampled Underfoot - Led Zep
Blindness - The Fall (The Classical being another prize walking cut by the same band)
Subcutaneous Phat - Desert Sessions
No-one Knows - Queen O' T' Stone Age
Improvise - Jurassic 5
Vicious Battle Raps - DJ Format (I do go on about that track, don't I?)
The Number Song - DJ Shadow

There's doubtless more, but I'm supposed to be doing other things right now and can't think. I'll get back to you, honest...
