What would you do if you were in Edinburgh for an hour of an early evening in mid-November? And then another hour a couple of days later.

I ask because I've got a train connection there and don't want to hang around in a station for an hour each way.

I know very little about Edinburgh, so hoping that some of you live there/have lived there/have at least been there, I thought I'd ask.

Any suggestions?

I've only been there once, but moop lived there for about a year. I'm assuming you're going via Waverley? If for some odd reason you're going through Haymarket, there's pretty much nothing. If it is Waverley, then I'd walk along Prince's Street, I guess. Do you have a good sense of direction? There are lots of cool streets to explore, but you could easily get lost if you're, say, like me.

It'll take longer than an hour, but they do fantastic ghost walks around the city. They take you down into the catacombs which are amazing to visit. They're locked off to the general public, so it's the only way to get down there and it's fascinating to see and feel the spaces where old craftsmen worked deep below the ground.

A quicker thing to do is go to the Edinburgh Dungeon. It's quite an interesting way to pass an hour or-so.

Most things to do there are going to take longer than an hour when you factor in the travelling time. There are some nice walks up the hill to fantastic views of the city that you might be able to do in an hour, but you'd have to head back pretty much as soon as you get there. There's a Roman-looking thing that a guy tried to built (but ran out of money before it was finished) but that's pretty cool to visit.

As Candice says, Haymarket is rubbish if you want to do anything at all. But its on the way to Waverley, and that's probably where you'll end up changing train anyway; walk out of there and you'll find yourself either on Princes Street or in Princes Gardens, both of which are good for a gander. Head south from Princes Street and you'll hit the Royal Mile, which is by far the greater of the two streets to see. The Gardens are in between both.

You can't miss the Mile, its the street with the castle at the top and the Scottish Parliament (the one that looks like a post-apocalyptic bomb site) at the bottom. It contains most of the attractions to be seen in Edinburgh, right next to the station, many of which can be done in much less than an hour.

These include, and aren't limited to: The Camera Obscura, The Childrens' Museum, Edinburgh Castle, a very fascinating and modern science museum whose name eludes me, and many, many pubs...

The parliament is a bit far down to do in an hour, though if you have some extra time its right next to my favourite part of Edinburgh; Arthur's Seat.

Basically, find a map, find the castle, and everything from there all the way down to the bottom of the Royal Mile is fair game.

And just think; I know all this wonderful stuff, and yet I still hate the dang place. Get your changeover at Glasgow next time, we'll go for a pint tongue.gif

Edit: because I should know how to spell our own train stations' names properly...

Most of the attractions that you speak of seem to be closed at 5/6pm which is when I'm there, so I'm thinking I'll just find a nice cosy pub/cafe for a bit.

Oh and if I could have changed in Glasgow I would have, I love Glasgow and my big sister lives there so I'd have seen her as well.
