1. It creates a competition type atmosphere.
2. It seems to run off old regulars.
3. It seems to piss some people off.
4. It makes it hard to catch up on threads when you've been absent.
5. It makes it hard to find a common theme to conversations.
6. It makes threads go completely off topic.
7. People seem to do it to gain respect.
8. People do it to increase their post count.
9. No one is imune to it.
10. It goes too far sometimes.

Don't get me wrong, like number 9 says no ones immune to it and that of course includes myself. Seometimes though it just bugs, and I felt like venting a little. Post count doesn't make someone a better forumite, at least not in my eyes. So feel free to be pissed at me for making this thread. I need to pee.

lets add a number 11........11. It pushes special threads down farther, and it makes it hard for people who are supposed to have seen them to find them.

yeah, me and cheese were talking about this yesterday. i dont know if i spam, but i usually just talk when i have something to say. please tell me if i have too much to say!!! it really doesnt matter how many posts you have. i never cared about my post count [except for that 1 time when gerbil left and i wanted to beat him....i admit it...] but i think that mata has done can to cut it down and we really have to do this ourselves now.

crazy... the thing is, is that you have something usually worth saying that is relevant... alot of the stuff that was spammed from last night... is... just so random... and really shouldnt even be considered a convorsation...

i'm not defending randomly constantly spamming everything and saying absolutely nothing of relevance newhere, but not ALL spam is bad. the spam in the spamming thread is actually funny mosta the time, and a lota the spam in the random thoughts thread is the same. the bo selecta thread........ that's another kind of acceptable spamming, i jus dunno why.........neways, spamming in serious thread or threads where a relevant, interesting convo is goin on isn't acceptable (to me neways) like if someone started spammin this thread, that's not the kind of spam neone wants to see and it destroys relevant convos. o, and if ppl really hate all kinds of spamming so much, jus stay away from the threads where there's SUPPOSED to be spam (bo selecta, the spam thread, the random thoughts thread, and jus about ne thread with over 1000 posts in it )

i told people to spam in the random/spam/bo threads.. but when there is thread in the suicide and abuse thread (not alot, but there is) its just unacceptable....

someone spammed the suicide thread? that's really jus not right (hope no one gets offended or hurt, but it's true) yeah, everyone in the forum calls me 'the official forum spammer' or somethin like that (e.x. 'spamasaur' lol, that one's funny tho ) but i only spam threads where either it's acceptable to spam since the thread began, or the thread's gone so far off topic that ppl jus start talkin about whatever comes into their heads

My purpose in making this thread was a little venting session for me, that I know some people agree with because I've gotten PMs from various people about them, or the discussion would come up in chat, so thought I would make a venting session available for those in need lol. But like gerbil said not all spam is bad, and like I said before spamming happens to the best of us.

I saw it happening though where people were spamming to increase their number count, and increase where they were on the the top posters count. This just kind of reminded me of LOD back when he spammed and said its because he got more respect by having a higher post count. I don't know if thats why it was happening or just started in good fun to try and reach a certain point on the top posters area.

I'm still not pointing fingers, and I'm not upset with anyone for doing it, I just personally felt a little annoyed by it. It's happened before and will probably happen again, since things seem to be rather ciclicle here. I remember when there was a big push to be in the top five and we all spammed and spammed to get up there and not get beat. I was included in this lol. I think it was around the time leo first came to the boards, and about the time I took my brief break from here.........ok yeah I'm done ranting and need to go find more skrews to finish my shelving unit.

actually, i DID get a certain amount of respect by bein #1 poster, at least from the new ppl. once ppl are here long enough tho, i seemed to lose that respect instantly....... i wonder why that was *whistles innocently*

I think we all have spammed a forum at least once in our lives, I know I have, but of course I knew which ones to not do that too.

Hmmm... it's an interestin point... I guess there are some spurious "random" threads that are OK to spam a little bit (but only if they're headin that way) an the obvious spam threads... but I hafta agree that spammin the serious threads shouldn't be done. I know sometimes conversations spring up in em, which is fine, but outright spam shouldn't be tolerated.

So... jus to kick this idea around a bit... does anyone think we should have a separate section fer serious topics, away from General Chat?

I'm thinking that could be possible, at least since there are mature people here, I think it is safe to say no span will be permitted in this serious section in which you speak of.

That's the plan, yep... it could be self-moderated (which I'd much prefer) or we could go to the extreme of deletin anythin considered spam...
