I believe it may be because the search engine would chew up more bandwidth, and that there bandwidth stuff can be pricey...

May 27 2003, 06:22 PM
I don't think it takes that much.
I assumed it was down to the fact there are only 4 forums

i believe that it would be that the CPU usage on the server would cause this site and others to be slower if everyone was doing physical resource intense processes like searching.
it could be that or mata just doesnt love us enough to give us a search engine

It's always been turned off...

Or it could be that I'll be jiggered if I know how to fix it...
There are bandwidth issues too (let's face it, it's really not essential is it?)

Search would be really good for here I think just cos the fact that its so active,
you could jus Search for your name being said and boom you know if people have been talking to you, with out having to look thou 1000's of threads.
but I wouldn't surjest looking for your name mata if you ever did put one on, jus because there are so meny women here (and guys) who love nothing more than to talk about you lol

oh and another thing mata
when you get World domination can I be Called Number 3 and join your evil empire kind of like in the bond films, I'd say Number 2 but that number always gets killed first....
Mata

Possibly, but then you wouldn't last long after your promotion would you?
Do you know how to get the search thingy working?
gary
May 30 2003, 12:48 PM
Yes I do
Users and Groups>Manage User Groups>
then pick a Group Title
example ''Members''
Scan across to ''Edit Group'' and click
once inside look for ''Global Permissions ''
then ''Can use search?'' then you click on the yes or No
you do this for what ever member group so if you wished you could have it so that only Admins can use Search.
If that does not work then hell if I know.....
and I'll just make sure Number 4 always leap frogs me when number 2 gets killed in an elabarate scam

Nope, that's already set to allow people to search.

yes, yes it is.
as it is now I have to go through pages and use the "find" feature on IE.... sad really.
But, hey, you're far better than I. I have a small webpage with numerous non-dedicated people, no animation short of gif banners which I myself made, and it hasn't been updated in months because someone made a 2-part article and refuses to put up the second part.. I don't think it exists. I don't even know how to make a message board.. although there is a link to a page entitled message board on the site.. it says something about how it is to be.
----------------
Highly Flamable.com (<-- my webpage refferenced above.)
P.S. There's one other way to search that I know of.. you have to use google and in the box write "[text looking for] site:[URL of site]" (ie. "mata site:www.matazone.co.uk").... you can get the code for such a box that will automatically add the "site:www.matazone.co.uk/forums"... but I don't know how. I've seen it before.
craziness

oy, people, you are so demanding! leave the poor man alone! he does enough for you already providing brilliant animations free of charge, and not to mention, an online forum. he gives up most of his time and money just for us! jesus!
cheese is funny

i agree with crazi...
unless you plan on fixing it for him, leave it alone... do we really need it?
Mata

Thanks Cheese and Crazi.
This forum does take some maintenance to try and keep it happy and smooth and to be honest I really don't have time to work out why the search feature doesn't work!

I know this is an ancient thread but I thought I should mention that the reason you can't use the search engine is because it doesn't exist, Invision disabled it and didn't remove the link to it because they're a bunch of pigs (I should know, having belonged to an InvisionFree board, down half the time).
So in short, any forum using the Invision software won't have the search engine.
Ah yes, and now back to our normal programming

...are you talking about a different search engine from the one at the top of the page? Because that one works just fine.

Well, either I'm wrong and it only affected the free forums, or it's been repaired since FF moved to our own server and Yabb software...
But yes, thanks for pointing that out
