Did anybody see the news last night in Britain about that asylum seeker who has gone on a hungar strike and sewn his mouth and his eyes shut?...I was just wondering, cos saw it and it really was disturbing that the situation in this country has gone to such an extreem that a man wuld mutilate and potentally kill himself because of it.

I was wondering if anybdy else knew the whole context of it cos I only caught a glimpse of the story?

He was let into the country, and now we're threatening to kick him out. Don't see what sewing his mouth, eyes and ears shut will do to protest though, it won't stop us kicking him out. He's like the 3 Wise Monkeys rolled into 1!

It's passive resistance. Alot of people go on hunger strikes, stand in front of rolling tanks, walk through India, lay down in front of logging trucks etc... as a passive resistance. They're trying to appeal to the humanity of their oppressors. Or some such rot like that.

it is like the Buddhist monks that set themselves on fire... u know.. I am just happy to sign a petition... I admire folks that care so much for a cause that they use there death to draw attention to the cause.. but I aint nobodies hero.. you will never see me pour gasoline all over myself and set myself a blaze...

i've seen pictures of those monks....it's weird to think they sat there and let themselves burn....HOW?? surely the pain.....it's beyond my mental thingummibobs. and this stitching up of eyes ears and mouth is just stupid...there are probably better ways to protest. not that i can think of any, it's just that it seems to extreme...this is an unusually long post for me....wow....i might stop now.

People usually do those sorts of protests when they have tried everything else and no one i paying attention to them or they're not getting the answer they want. So they do something really extreme to get the medias involvement and the publics sympathy. It worked in this case. If you had heard something about a man applying to stay in the UK through all the normal ways, forms and beauracracy and the like you wouldn't have thought very much about it and in all truth wouldn't have heard about it unless you knew him. But because he's sewing his eyes and mouth shut it becomes a freak show of sorts and attracts your interest if not your sympathy.

hmmm i think you've got a good point there...it certainly grabs your attention when you see the pictures. i just feel really sorry for him now cause he's going to carry those scars for life...although maybe he thinks that will soften public opinion...i dont know.
