Yo -

try pressing the buttons once then typing the text you want to be in bold / italic / underline etc... then press that button again

you will see that [these brackets] come up with either bold, italic or underline written in them... when you have finished the same thing is written again with [/this mark].

To change font size or colour - I suggest that you type the text you want to colour in - then highlight it (press the left mouse button and drag the cursor over the text), then click the drop down menu (eg colour) and choose which colour you want.

I hope this makes sense...

Up to you and your prospective n00b, really. A good guideline is waiting until you reach Super Advanced Member status - a good indicator of you having been around long enough and knowing enough about the place to be able to handle the questions of someone completely new.
