right so i made this cause i was interested to know if anyone is on the forums. please remeber it is anonymous so tell the truth!
its just my dad is the rasict person ever and after people hear my dad say racist stuff i automatically get classed as rasict too when i dont even class people as black/white or whatnot at all. i just class them as people.
this isnt meant to offend anyone at all, i was jsut interested.
please add your thoughts if you want to!

as far as im concerned, im not racist... but just by how i was raised and what i heard from kids when i was younger, and from family (not my parents, mind you) i sorta got a lil brainwashed by them.... i sorta look down on black people... i try so freaking hard not to... and its a REALLY bad habit i wish i could kick... i think i am getting over it... because i dont notice myself doing it anymore... dont hate me because i heard stupid things as a kid... im forgeting more and more everyday...

sweetie you can't help how you where raised.. the point is you know that it is not right.. from there you just have to educate yourself and look for influence. Look into some great African-American authors, singers, painters, etc.. if you understand more, and experience more you'll find that the lessons forced on us by our family/environment/schools are replaced by the more important ones..the ones you experience and formulate for yourself

i do not think of myself as racist at all but i might have some prejudices im unaware of ... i am white but mother has two sisters, one married a greek and the other married an iranian so i have mixed-race cousins - also my birth father was born in singapore to scottish parents
i defnitly dont look down on people of another colour than me as a different kind or creed of people and ive never really experienced the world of work yet but i dont think people should be judged on appearance, and that goes for tats, piercings, hair colour, disabilities ANYTHING in the workplace, intelligence etc should be what matters

i disagree with that. people who are brought up in third world contrys or people who dont og to school for a number of reasons re less intelligent than others. i think the only thing that sets us apart is peoples personalitys which is also mostly determined from how we are brought up but a lot of it is to do with what has happened to you in life which is exactly what is diferent about us all, we have all ahd different lifes.

eurgh - im not sure if what i said came out right and now im not sure if youre mad at me - i meant for getting jobs ... employers shouldnt look at a persons appearance and judge them - they should think of who is best for the job (obv)
i dont really care about intelligence for who i am friends with, just that they are a nice person, the rest is just extra

Jun 16 2003, 05:42 PM
erk that came out wrong too
i also meant to say that i dont think that not going to school makes you stupid, it just means youve had less opportunity and peole cant help that - unfortunately that CAN have major effects on peoples lives which often cannot be rectified,
basically im making a mess of what im trying to say but i hope you kinda get it

yes but how different are our lives? Generally speaking of course.. everyone has experiences that make them unique... but...there is a 50% chance that I have had something similar happen to me..say for instance, when I was 7-8 years old I stepped on a hatchet in the yard and had to get 20 some stitches... now I don't know to may people who have stepped on hatchets... but 90% of people I know have been cut so bad the required some sort of medical assistance. So the same general experience is the same for 90% of people..

I voted null vote because, like the majority of people, I dont want to be a racist, I believe that the society I grew up in has enforced stereotypes within my mind.
When asking if I'm a racist, are you asking if I would kick a black person when they're lying helpless on the ground, just because they're black and theres no one around, or are you asking if I'd prefer my girlfriend to be black or white?

[wraeth] im asking if you look at other races from yourself as anything below your self.
ravein - i kinda get what you mean but the combination of which things happen to us and the way in which they do are all different and thats what form our thoughts and our lives.

having grown up in a town with a very small ethnic population, we never had problems and i never had racist beliefs. i still do not believe myself to be racist now but since my father moved to a city with a much larger ethnic population, i can understand how some people can become racist.
i still do think racism is wrong, dont get me wrong
but i find it annoying when if you insult someone, because they are a schmo or because they are a yobbo or whatever, and they happen to have a different skin colour, you are automatically branded a racist. every group, race, gender, age , anything, has good people and bad people but you are not alowed to voice this opicion if that person happens to be of a different race to yourself for fear of political incorrectness and lynch mobs knocking at your door.
the equal rights sheets you have to fill in to get a job really annoy me. surely it would be more correct to employ people according to their skill, instead of having to employ a certain percentage of black/white/aisian/irish/martian.... because it seems to me (you may disagree) that a race as a whole may be good at one thing, while another race, in general is better at another area of work and it would be fairer to look at people for jobs without knowing their ethnicicity at all.

I'm not a racist an i can't stand it. I feel there is no point for it, deep down every1 is the same, they have feelings, freedom of speech an a conscience. its up to them how they use them. i value other peoples opinions, an if they are racist, they probably hav a valid reason y. i just dont feel the need for it.
so what if people look different, thats what makes us unique.

I'm not racist, and I hate racism, although I do make petty discriminations about people... But not by race. Anyway, my dad is so racist... gah... I don't feel like ranting about it though.

Not intentionally, but like Elf, I make petty discriminations.

i reeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaallllllllllllllllllly
HATE
racists.
my 2 older brothers are both really my half brothers [by blood only....their mother died, they are my legal brothers, my mother legally adopted them, and i would never even question in my mind that they are mentally my brothers thankyouverymuch.] but they are both half puerto rican. my adopted cousin is columbian and my other adopted cousin is black. one of my cousins is half croatian...well i dunno if that counts but still.... one of my moms best friends is from hungary, and my older-brother's mother's family are all puerto rican, and we all consiter eachother family, even though we are in no way tied [legally. we sort of are by blood because they are aunts uncles cousins etc to my "half" brothers, who are "half" related to me. so yeah.] i dont believe in religion, so i would never judge somebody by theirs. i absolutely loathe homophobic people. i have friends who have birth defects and dont look quite normal. i dont really give a damn what my friends are going to wear/what music they are going to listen to. i like most types of music, and clothes interest me greatly. lol.
in social studies [aka history] class, my teacher was talking about how he thinks that very very very few can truly not have any prejudices. i raised my hand and told him that [my paragraph above], and he said "jessica, i think that is amazing, and im so glad that you are able to be that way." i can tell that the whole class was listening to me then as well, because everybody looked and nobody talked.

My father is very racist, which i hate, and it sometimes he comes out in my conversations with certain friends who are racist, but i hate it. I think everyone should be equal, not one better than the other. Each race has it's own ways of living, but why should we put them down for this? It's all wrong.

why in this thread does it seem it is mostly the older generation of males (our fathers) who are racist?

i nulled my vote. this is because i have not grown up in/been a part of a mixed race culture. off-hand i would say that i am not racist, as i do not feel anything negative or possative when i see people of a different colour to myself on tv. i've always considered that skin colour has nothing to do with the person (as in their personallity and such).
p.s: on another thread candice mentioned ebonics or something. what excactly is this?
LindyLouWho
Jun 17 2003, 05:25 PM
Ebonics is the name given to the particular type of slang used in urban areas in the US. It is mainly seen as a black thing but anyone who grew up in the city uses it to a point.
Anyways as far as being racists, I think we all have certain ideas impressed apon us by the media and perhaps family. I try not to let these ideas color my impression of people but that is all I can do. I really have a problem with a certain persona. The gagsta rap lifestyle and attitude really get on my last good nerve. not to say that all the people who listen to it are asses but from what I usually see its ingrained in them to think their shite dun stink. It really bugs wether the person is black white chinese or orange with purple spots!

lol, yeah i agree with you, the "i am so gangster" thing pisses me off, not the skin color. besides, more people who arent black seem to be into that anyways! lol! for example, a real life conversation i heard in school just yesterday. featuring: carlos, who is puerto rican but black, and danny who is columbian.
carlos: yo, are you still going out with ali or are you flying single again? [notice how he uses the gangsterness a little bit, i would say yo too so he is just being like normal]
danny: nah, dat ho is wack. i gots me a new bitch now. shes all freeky-deeky like, iz so hot.

im not a racist, i do not think people of different skin colour/race/religion are better or worse than myself, but what with the media portrayal of immigrants recently, i can see how people may become influenced into racist thoughts.
