I find it difficult to believe that would directly kill someone, unless it was due to a secondary cause, like a heart attack.
Actually it's the same principle as if you hit someone in the kidney hard enough. It's shock to major nerve bundles.

I believe that death can occur from the massive shock, but I'm not sure of how that actually happens.
