Its great for background music while I'm working 'cause it's relaxing yet atmospheric and it's all sung in hopelandic, so I'm not drawn into the lyrics.

Currently:
I am listening to Human Nature by Michael Jackson who I still think has sung some of the best pop music ever. About as commercial as you can get but, damn, it's catchy.
Followed By:
Things I Don't Understand by Coldplay, a B-Side from the 'Speed of Sound' single which I think should have been included on the X&Y album (which iTunes has done).

Good Charlotte has been pop for a while, as far as I know. Sorry.
Great Big Sea- Up. Fun album to listen to while writing, if only because the lead singer's from Newfoundland and has a silly accent.

followed by
A Certain Smile - Johnny Mathis
During my 'vocal tuition' today (aka. singing lesson), my teacher told me she wanted me to sing some Johnny Mathis songs soon. I said I didn't think I knew any of his music. Then I come home and listen to a shuffled selection of songs in iTunes, and the second one is Johnny Mathis with A Certain Smile - a song I know and love.
Which just shows that I know nothing about my own music collection.

Oh my gartered aunts. Everyone--everyone who likes music should like the Decemberists. Particularly those who like their music with pirates and petticoats and the occasional political rant hidden inside lovely crescendoes.

Also: writing mix, intended to make me want to write my quarterly report for science research. It’s clearly working to the best of its ability, but Matazone is far too strong a pull. It’s got: Talking Heads, Steely Dan, Rufus (Chaka Kan’s group before she got famous) Pixies, Nirvana, and Muse. And…McLusky and Iggy Pop and Louis XIV and Jefferson Airplane. And a wee bit of Nick Drake, for a dash of folk.
*pretends to write some more*

Sure thing! I know someone who can play the saxophone and the flute incredibly well. And someone who can hit things with sticks, so I'll make him drummer. And I can play about 8 chords on a guitar, and can strike the approximate keys on a piano. My vocal chords seem to function relatively well too so... ? I reckon we could be the next big thing.
Been listening to:
Myself (again) on the piano playing various Elton John songs (Don't Let The Sun..., Blue Eyes, I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues, Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting), Coldplay's 'Clocks', and Bruce Hornsby's 'Way It Is'.
Then myself on the guitar playing that little bit of song I wrote, again. I am good at writing half-songs. Yup.
