Oh, that song. Ooooold. First Smiths song ever.

right now: Windowlicker - Aphex Twin

Also, Saul Williams? That's a name I haven't heard in a while. He's completely amazing, I bought "Said the Shotgun to the Head" a few years ago and loved it.

PS - is windowlicker supposed to sound like sex a little bit?

Any Death From Above 1979?

Pfft, of course. I was going to put in their whole album, but instead put in just Black History Month, Romantic Rights and Little Girl.

Syuu- I love Saul Williams and recently saw him at a spoken word evening. He was brilliant, but a few days later I saw a Nike advert that used List Of Demands as its background track and he kind of fell from grace in my eyes.
syuu
Eech, you shouldn't have told me that, it burns a little bit. The way he writes is just, I don't know, it's like drugs for my brain. I can read it all very quickly or absorb it very slowly, and either way, it's kind of like taking a peek into another world. His spoken word and spoken word in general don't really do much for me. I like to visualize things and, oddly enough, his voice distracts me from that.

On a related note: The Mountain Goats - Dance Music

HAHAH, Spoony was so right about it..
Daria
I love HappySad Music biggrin.gif Especially Oh No! Oh My!- they have some brilliant lyrics and their music is always so happy happy.gif

Mmm. Choice. Great tracks from a great album.

syuu - 'Windowlicker' is most definitely supposed to sound like sex. Have you seen the vid? Disturbing...

More Go! Team for me this morning. I've fallen in love with 'The Power Is On' and 'Bottle Rocket' all over again. Sesame Street block party in my head, and everyone's invited.

EDIT: I've popped a link to the 'Windowlicker' vid up there - it's a flippin' masterpiece, is what it is. Be warned though because, as the BBC continuity announcers like to say, there is strong language from the outset.
Industrial Kybosh
Some mornings you really fancy something spiky and cutting edge - something experimental and daring to challenge your sleepy mind with hitherto unknown wonders. Then your MP3 player gives you 'Trampled Underfoot' by Led Zep.

Sometimes, MP3 player knows best.

Ce Matin La - Air

And next will be a blast-from-the-past home made techno song called Bus Explendis. Fantastic stuff.
Izzy
Icky 95.3 (radio station that plays rap). I've tried chaning it to 101.1. And 96.5. And 98.9...
Industrial Kybosh
'Hip Priest' by the Fall is not a song made for lovely sunny days, I discovered today. 'Touch Sensitive', however, is. Result.
Industrial Kybosh
Super Furry Animals - 'She's Got Spies'. Love love LOVE this tune - it really should've been a single, but so should every other track on 'Radiator'...
Doctor Doom
I am listening to ExitingARM, the new album by Subtle. It is awesome.

Also enjoying Banjo Or Freakout and Buttonhead. They are on the internet.
leopold
Siouxsie and the Banshees "Juju" album.

Following the footsteps of a ragdoll dance, we are entranced.

I'd forgotten how good that album was.
Doctor Doom
New album by No Age, called Nouns. Imagine how you felt first time you heard You're Living All Over Me. It's like that.

Paavoharju, new and old. Frankly frightening live artefact, seemingly recorded on a C90. Abruptly ends like Cloverfield without the fairground footage.

Memories of the Future by Kode9 & The Spaceape; a different end of the world to Paavoharju's snow-caked wasteland. Brilliant stuff.

I've got one of their tracks from a Rough Trade Counter Culture comp - 'Everybody's Down'. It's pretty damn good.
Sir Psycho Sexy
What a Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong

What a Wonderful World - Joey Ramone

Still can't decide which I prefer more... blink.gif
leopold
It's a tough call, bud. Do you go for the all-time classic or the infinite cool of Joey Ramone's version? I'd not like to make that call.

So instead I've decided to jolly up my Thursday morning by playing the Arctic Monkey's Favourite Worst Nightmare album. Very loudly. Yes, yes, I know they're commercial now and not at all cool, but try telling me that Brianstorm doesn't raise the mood. Look, even the sun has popped out on hearing it.

On the same Sun Popping theme, I'm listening to Summertime, sung by Ella Fitzgerald and Louie Armstrong. It's all hazy and warm when, for the first time this week, there are clouds in the sky.
Doctor Doom
Nine Inch Nails, The Slip. Because it's free and I always want to like new NIN stuff. And this one I actually do. It's not amazing or anything, but it sounds brilliant, and the only enjoyable NIN release this decade (not including the DFA remix of The Hand That Feeds, 'cause that was ace).

I used to do the same thing with the Jesus and Mary Chain. I always wanted to like their stuff but I just couldn't quite manage it. Which, considering I was a goth at the time, was a pretty poor show. Couldn't really figure out why I could listen to other, less accessible darkwave but not JAMC.

But I'm not listening to the dark stuff today, I want light and fluffy so the sun burns brighter, hence my next choice: Half Man Half Biscuit. If you've never heard these guys before, I suggest you beg/steal/borrow some from somewhere.

Shove your eyes upwards in this very thread - I've been banging on about them relentlessly until everyone else gets bored and leaves the room. Such a great band - true masters of comic lyricism married to actually-very-good tuneage.
Industrial Kybosh
'Part Time Punks' by Television Personalities. It's been in my head all... day... long...

It's all about the 'la la la la laaa laaaaaa' bit. Addictive.

Well no then, but I am writing about it.

Bloody amazing song. Must be played very loud.

finally got around to watching windowlicker vid.
WHAT? WHAAAAT? EXPLETIVE?!?
That was an experience if I've ever had one.

Ontopic: Spoon - Nefarious
Doctor Doom
If Windowlicker is supposed to sound like sex, it's the Wrong Sex. I swear all the vocal samples are made up of RDJ (or someone) going "Duhhh". Y'know. Windowlicker being another word for [edit] someone with a mental disability [edit].

I'm listening to this folksy band called Trenchmouth!, and I'm really enjoying. Their fiddler posted the link on another board I frequent. Listen to Long Black Veil, because it's gorgeous.

Also today, I've enjoyed Mos Def's Black On Both Sides, a mashtape of Mos Def and MF Doom, and ExitingARM by Subtle some more, 'cause it's bloody marvellous.

Oh, and I listened to The Slip again. I'm astounded that Trent's actually recorded a halfway decent album, fourteen years on from The Downward Spiral.

Sorry Doc didn't think much of your original wording please take more care. Cath

Sorry Cath, I didn't think your rewording was that great either. Leo
leopold
I'm listening to some nice, mellow ethereal Cocteau Twins in the form of their "Heaven or Las Vegas" album. Liz Fraser's soothing vocal should ease the pain of a Monday morning.

Hmmm, now I think about it I can't help but wonder if there's been some outside influence on this choice...

Eiffel 65 - Silicon World

Come on, the blue-da-ba-dee guys? That was total musical class!

Rimsky-Korsakov's Piano quintet. Currently it's mvt.3. It's so humorous.
Doctor Doom
This morning, shades of MF Doom's Operation Doomsday and the magnificent Mm.. Food, and the continued enjoyment of ExitingARM by Subtle.

Windowlicker being another word for [edit] gooey in the brain [edit].

Sorry Doc didn't think much of your original wording please take more care. Cath

Sorry, I mean...

The word I used may not have been politically correct (nor, for the record, is 'Windowlicker', feel free to go edit that out of multiple posts), but "gooey in the brain" is just so patronising, which in itself is likely to offend anyone struggling with the realities of mental illness in their life.

I did not realise I was subject to such bizarre scrutiny here. I'll remember to pad my posts with cotton wool in future.
Forever Unknown
Also, 'gooey in the brain' and 'spastic' are NOT the same thing, seeing as 'spastic' can refer to someone of either mental AND/OR physical disablement. I think someone who just had a physical disability would be VERY offended by it being suggested they had mental problems.
syuu
If you would like to discuss the use of a particular word and whether or not it is politically correct, (which I am serious about, as I have an opinion on the whole thing) you're free to make a new topic in issues, and similarly, if you have a question concerning a mod's decision, you're free to PM them. Until then, I'm afraid Cath's edit goes and this isn't the place to debate it out.

The Darkness - I Believe In A Thing Called Love tongue.gif

It is always so frightening how you guys don't just let a conversation happen here and how a moderator's decision cannot be questioned in public. Damn strange.
syuu
Well, so you don't think there's a mass coverup, I was mainly saying that in an effort to avoid spamming up a thread where this really doesn't need to take place. Feel free to question it - if you feel like the nature of that word versus the term used needs to be debated, the Issues forum is probably a more appropriate place to do it. smile.gif

Duran Duran - Come Undone

Cath is a new mod and may still be finding her feet. This is the "Whatchoo Listnin' To, Foo'?" thread, not the "Let's discuss derogatory terms for people with mental and or physical disabilities". That can be found here.
I'm not sure, FU, that any of the moderators are saying that they can't be openly challenged, nor will they stop you from doing so- it seems to be more of a case of where one decides to challenge it, and in what way.

I'm still fiddling with my external HD to be listening to anything mad.gif

There just always seems to be a complete panic: "take this to the appropriate forum right now kthxbai", but seems to me I see OT posts and spam all the time and they're not instantly chided, are they?

That's the appearance that it gives at least. I find it a little oppressive to be told when and where to disagree with something, is all. So I said so!
Daria
Fair do's!
Currently listening to Bitches Ain't Shit by Ben Folds.
leopold
Okay, I've altered Cath's original alteration, largely because it wasn't a particularly great reworking (sorry Cath, but it wasn't).

We mods are not here to oppress anyone. This place is Mata's home and we're the bouncers sorting out the trouble. We've been trusted to use our judgement to make these calls. In my case, I use the same tenet that I use at my own home: If you upset me, I'll tell you to pack it in. If you do it again, I'll kick your arse out the door! Fortunately I've never had to kick anyone out of here. Yet!

If anyone isn't happy, please re-read the rules before complaining further. These rules are in place to make this a happy place for everyone. If you don't agree with what's being done here, then unfortunately this isn't the place for you.

Now then, let's leave it at that and get on with the music.

I'm am listening to This House is A Circus by the Arctic Monkeys. They're not that great, especially since they havn't come out with an album for awhile, but it's a pretty cool band.

Um... they only formed in 2002, they released an album in early 2006, an EP in April 2006 and their second album in early 2007 and have a third album in the pipeline wink.gif Personally, I think they're a bit overhyped and were VERY over played in the UK when their first album came into the radar of the mainstream public. But their songs are catchy, and Dancing Shoes is always great to dance to.

I'm listening to M Craft's Silver And Fire album right now. It's all ^__^
Doctor Doom
This morning has been a grab bag of The Boats, Peeping Tom, Subtle and Nine Inch Nails (I can't believe I'm enjoying a new NIN album. I am obviously fifteen).

I quite agree, I can't recall the last time old Mr Reznor did anything really worth listening to. I think he peaked at Pretty Hate Machine, and that was so long ago that most fifteen year olds weren't even born!

Currently listening to Dark Side of the 80's (which predates everyone up to their mid 20's) which has lots of fantastic tracks on it. Currently it's Killing Joke, Love Like Blood. Intriguingly, they also did that song about living in the eighties, which is what it feels like I'm doing right now. Except I'm using a computer that is half the size and about a squillion times more powerful. And I'm on the Internet. And in a house that never even existed. So not really living in the 80s at all, just listening to the music...

Oooh, FOTN has just come on, Moonchild. I like this one muchly!

/me disappears off to the time of the dark nightclub with this song blaring out
Doctor Doom
The Devil, You + Me by The Notwist. Gorgeous stuff.
elphaba2
I love the notwist!

Currently listening to the dryer thunking full of sneakers. It rained today.
Doctor Doom
Loving The Notwist is a correct opinion.

You're Living All Over Me by Dinosaur Jnr. Still ace. Right now I am listening to my cat squeak at me. Little attention seeker, he is.
Novander
So every now and then a song comes along with just so much angst it makes me forget I'm not a teenager any more and for three minutes I lose all control of my hormones (not that I had any control before, mind) and its all melodrama and alive.

Right now, that song is Boys Like Girls - Up Against A Wall
syuu
Echo and the Bunnymen - The Killing Moon
leopold
Good call on the Bunnies there, Syuu. Didn't realise you were old enough to have even heard of them...

Currently listening to the Black Bible. Up to Specimen - Holes.
Izzy
The Elements Song - Tom Lehrer
leopold
Boards of Canada - Geogaddi. Currently on track 6, Sunshine Recorder. And the sun is shining smile.gif
