I, like many people, listen to things on a daily basis - whether I want to or not.

Amongst those things I include music - a thing I listen to for pleasure. I feel that one can learn a lot from a person's listening habits. Such as what music they like. And other stuff, too.

What I really want to know is - what music have you been listening to today?

I started my day with the new Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks album 'Pig Lib' (very odd, very good), followed that with half of a Kerrang freebie CD (first time I'd bought Kerrang in ages - hee hee! takes me back...), then 'Dark Side Of The Moon' by Pink Floyd (one of my albums of choice whilst on the 'puter) and, to bring us to now, a compilation of speedy sub-three-minute tunes I made myself. I call it FAST!, and it rocks.

Welp, being so early in the morn for me, I haven't had a chance to listen to much music yet. But I have had Da vinci's notebook stuck in my head all morning, so I guess that will have to do. Funny stuff, even in your head. ph34r.gif

Am listening to VNV Nation at the mo...
Industrial Kybosh
I'm now listening to 'The Braindance Coincidence', that Rephlex compilation that I bend everyone's ears about.

It's very goood.
saucy_tara
VNV now finished, now listenin to Dead Kennedys
Industrial Kybosh
Yay for the Dead Kennedies.

I've listened to a raft of tasty electronica today, most of which was after I got back to my place with a couple of buddies after a night out. Technically, that's today. Venetian Snares, Plaid, Autechre, Kid606, Boards of Canada and that's about it. Had a really brilliant conversation about building a conceptual model of musical taste, which would allow you to map out a person, or groups tastes, and identify the gaps so you could make totally new fresh tunes.

Then the new Mira Calix in the car in, which is rather lovely swooshy stuff.
Industrial Kybosh
Big up max respec' to tha Jonman.

Them's some tasty listenings indeedy, rude bwoy.

Can I hav some of whatever you've been smokin/drinkin/inhalin pleeeze Jon?

*puts on electro marketeer's hat*

You need to buy some Ovuca (Wasted Sunday is lush - King Stacey is a 4-track dancefloor-destroyer) and both Astrobotnia (who's secretly Ovuca anyway) CD releases. All on Rephlex. All absolutely brilliant.

Should be available off warp's site if you can't find them elsewhere.

*removes hat and picks imaginary lint from it*

I reckoned that that compilation was a bit hit'n'miss - which ones do you particularly like?

Lucky Strike Lights/awful coffee/my own smelly breath

Take your pick.
Industrial Kybosh
All compilations are hit and miss to some extent, and this one's certainly no exception...

I love the Cylob track, but am aware that not all of his stuff is like that. The Leila and Ovuca tracks are very nice - I ended up buying Leila's 'Like Weather', which I enjoy much - I like the Chaos AD track, the mu-ziq (closest I could really get to typing their name... tongue.gif) one, DMX Krew...

I think those cover my faves, but there isn't really one I hate, per se... just some I like less...

*rams electro hat back on quick-sharp*

Hmm, Cylob - I like the track that's on the comp, but the rest of his stuff I've heard had been utter tripe. What's the Leila record like? Might have to check that out.

Chaos AD is Squarepusher under a different name (I think the version on the comp is the squarepusher remix of the original track - i.e. he did another version of his own track in the style of the 'pusher). That is a brilliant track.

mu-ziq's early stuff is really good - changy cheeky electro - check out
http://www.planet-mu.com - it's his label. Releases a lot of REALLY good stuff. As always, back catalogue available at Warp.

Not sure if it's up your street, but I'm a huge Bogdan-boy. He's a Polish nutcase who makes loopy 200bpm beats that just make me grin like a loon. If you're up for jumping around like an idiot, it's very very good.

*adjusts hat in mirror and nods*

Heh heh heh.. so suddenly the pupil becomes the master... wink.gif

'Like Weather' is very nice. Quite laid back and trip-hoppy for the most part. One to put on when you want to relax, and can't be fussed with the challenge of something more experimental (BoC, say - luuurve 'Music Has The Right...' and 'Geogaddi').

I knew about Chaos AD being Squarepusher, but the info on mu-ziq is very welcome. As for Bogdan, I liked his track on the comp, but not as much as some others. I need to be in the right mood for it, really. But it's certainly good!

Didn't he work as a producer for Bjork or something?

Boggers and Bjork? Wow. Dunno if he did or not, but I love the idea. Plaid certainly have - I could be confusing them with someone else, but I thought they were involved with the production of Vespertine.

Speaking of Bogdan, he's hilarious to see play live. Plays off a laptop, and inbetween frantic bouts of mouse motion, he literally leaps around the stage/booth/whatever, tearing his hair out and writhing around on the floor. Total mentalist.
Industrial Kybosh
Result!

I'll keep an eye out for him then... heh heh!
craziness
today i have listened to sevendust, dope, and zeromancer so far. im sure that i will listen to some NIN later though...
Industrial Kybosh
Good old NIN - unofficial sponsors of the matazone forums, it seems...

I went on to supplement my listening with an extended session of Radio 6 (best radio station EVAR! There was a lovely feature on ambient music, which provided my first ever opportunity to hear what Richard 'Aphex' James really sounds like. Woot), a little Kerrang Radio when 6 got a bit odd, and I am now listening to Classic FM.

My tastes stretch far and wide, friends and neighbours.
LadyDarkPeach
I'm kinda mellow today, so i listen to my "mellow Songs" playlist:
clocks by coldplay
lucy in the sky with diamonds by THE BEATLES!
and the rest is stuff, i usually listen to those, and i hear the others. wink.gif laugh.gif ph34r.gif
cheese is funny
im gonna be listening to rancid for the next hour or two... then.. umm... probebly pennywise or the distillers... depends.. i dont feel like ska... had one of those days where i feel like head banging and moshing by myself in my room....
jicama
currently i've got an interesting mix... santana, mr. bungle, pink floyd, beatles, louis armstrong, buddy hollie, jefferson airplane, coldplay, rem, u2, ccr, bare naked ladies, guess who, primitive radio gods, gorillaz, hendrix... i could go on...
Industrial Kybosh
That's the spirit, jic!

I've started my day with a free CD I got after buying the aforementioned Stephen Malkmus album. There were two - one normal and one dance & urban - but the normal one had run out ;_;

As it is, the CD I got has some cracking tracks on it. I'm rather fond of the Bent and Plaid tracks, and was quite surprised at how much I enjoyed the Nivea and Buju Banton tracks.

Woo.
saucy_tara
Ultraviolence, NiN, Marylin Manson, Depeche Mode.....In a bit of a punchy mood today mad.gif

Ultraviolence

Woot!

Another Johnny Violent fan!

Which album? Personally, I love 'Masochist' from 'Killing God'. Excellent dominatrix vocal.
saucy_tara
Oh yeah baby!!!!!!Masochist rules, so does hadcore M.F. In fact, Johnny Violent is too coool (and disturbed) for his own good methinks. Sad to see you go InKy, good luck wiv whatever you do next and if you fancy a break from reality in the near future, come find us!!!!!! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
saucy_tara
OOPS, forgot to say I'm listenin to "Life of Destructor" at the mo smile.gif
Industrial Kybosh
I'll be back sometime...

Sadly, I don't own LoD. Only Killing God.

Boo...

Ever tried Digital Hardcore bands like Bomb20 and Atari Teenage Riot? You haven't lived until you've heard Bomb20's 'Made Of Shit!'

[EDIT] Back on the Malkmus again. It's a bloody excellent album - a real grower. Anyone who like non-conformist guitar music with wonderful bizarro lyrics should check him out, and his previous band Pavement. Word.
saucy_tara
I LOVE A.T.R, mad music is cool, not heard Bomb20 tho, ha ha, off to Kazaa!!!!Best ATR track? Raverbashing methinks biggrin.gif
Industrial Kybosh
Again, I have limited ATR knowledge. I love 'Revolotion Action!!!!!!!!' and 'Digital Hardcore'.

If you're hitting Kazaa, look for Made Of Shit! and Donutz And Blood by Bomb20, and Cocaine Ducks by EC8OR.

Lubberly!
talking to faeries
I've been listening to Blind Melon and the counting crows today. I had an earful last night tho watching my boyfriends band playing, I made the mistake of standing right by the speakers...now my ears hurt so at the mo I have to play my music very quietly sad.gif sad.gif
Industrial Kybosh
Don't fret, faeries. When you've battered your ears as much as I have, they'll develop an immunity to pain. Plus you'll have a pleasantly high-pitched buzzing wherever you go.

Pardon?

Listened to 6 Music earlier - God I love that station - and they'd chosen the new Stephen Malkmus album as Album Of The Day. Ahh, synchronicity...

Now listening to Mew (the 'Am I Wry? No' single - perhaps my favourite of 2002), soon to be followed by 'Music Has The Right To Children' by Boards Of Canada.

I have a busy and varied musical life.
MAtt
Foo fighters, Nirvana, goo goo dolls, stroke 9, counting crows, and thats it.... punk 4 me and you.
talking to faeries
I love the counting crows so much...went to see them in Cardiff in January...they were brilliant
MAtt

talking to faeries

MAtt

talking to faeries
you've just reminded me that I gotta buy that cd..I've been meaning to get that for a while.

thank you
Industrial Kybosh
Well, today has been another Malkmus day, but accompanied by some of my GFs music, also. I recall These Animal Men (who actually wrote a song about her ohmy.gif It's on an album and everything!), but everything else was a blur.

The train home gave me chance to listen to Boards Of Canada ('Geogaddi', for a change) and Ultraviolence.

Arriving home I was greeted by various Buddhist chanting, and eventually 6 Music - specifically Bruce Dickinson. Yes! Him out of Iron Maiden! He DJs for Radio 6!

YAAAAAAAAY!!!

Saucy - did you download any of those tracks at all?
CrissiLove
I'm listening to "In My Place" by Coldplay right now... last song I listened to before this one was "Addicted" by Dan Seals... lol
Industrial Kybosh
I've just remembered - I also spent part of the day dancing around the kitchen with my GF to 'Once More With Feeling', which is better known as the musical episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

She has the soundtrack. It's actually rather good.

BTW, eagle-eyes posters wil have noticed a change in my sig brought on by said album.
Sarah the Spider
I woke up in the living room, since I had been watching Adult Swim, so Cartoon Network was on, I think it was Scooby-Doo, so I heard some 70s song playing. I went to church ( dry.gif ) and heard hymns, but in my head I was thinking about the song "My Goddess" over and over again. Then I came home and listened to the Chicago soundtrack for a few hours, then I listend to Good Charlotte for a few hours...and then I went to fly kites with my friends.

Wow, I am dull AND boring! Kites...

Don't get me wrong, I love the fun-ness of those oh-so-high flying things, but it's the last day of Spring Break and...yeah...
Industrial Kybosh
I haven't flown a kite in years. We haven't really had a good wind, and I think I'd feel like a bit of a twat stood on a field on my own dragging a kite behind me...

If I did go kite-flying, I should think I'd listen to '()' by Sigur Ros.

way to get back on topic, dood...
saucy_tara
Nah, looked for bomb20 but found nada, just about to look for "high voltage"by electric 6......"Danger, Danger!!!" Nice to have you back btw smile.gif Respeck to the sigur ros massiv......
Mata
Ultraviolence... Not too sure, I love Life of Destructor (the last track is gorgeous), but Superpower is mainly just cheese and I'm not so keen on it. I've got the Johnny Violent mix session called Shocker and again I'm not entirely convinced.

The week's listening has been mainly The Isness by Amorphous Androgynous (a heavily 70's influenced electronica album by the same guys as Future Sound Of London).
prezgfish
at this moment listening to best of black sabbath while reading alice and wonderland now that's mind rape
the-elusive-it!
biggrin.gif
today iam listening to current 93, before that i was playing the aphex twin, later on today i may(or may not) listen to the specials, i suppose i will life without the specials is not very good.
leopold
Gor, I feel so out the loop here... Apart from Electric 6 (which I dl'ed a coupla weeks back) an some vague recollection of ATR aaaaages ago, I dun get ta hear the new stuff much... Which is crap, really. I have no excuse.

So instead I'll just tell ya I listened to QOTSA in the car this mornin. I'm feelin good so I wanted summat lite an poppy rockwise. La la la la laaaaa...

I wanna put some NIN or Neph in the car but most of me better stuff is on vinyl (cos it's jus soooo much better) an even tho I have a proper audio CD burner in me setup (cos me got more dosh than sense, which aint hard, trust me!!) the only thing I wuz ever arsed to record was "Diva" by Annie Lennox - an that wuz only cos one of me lovely lay-dee friends had just kicked out her total tosspot arsehole of a husband an he cleaned out her CD collection. He not a nice person. Me smite him BAAAD mad.gif Nice album tho. An Annie is one freaky weird sort...
Debaser
yeah, i been listening to the new qotsa album quite a bit recently...along with the pixies (obvious, really), jimmy eat world, at the drive-in and the white stripes...
