so whats everyons views on charities and stuff?

i was listening to my local radio on da net, and there was this advert on the bottom....

it says that a child dies every 3 seconds due to poverty.
it adds another number on every 3 seconds.
i was listening to it for quite a bit and i noticed it.
Since i have been listening 6430 people have died due to poverty and it made me feel bad.
i thought id make you all feel bad.
im so nice.

60p a day can make a family happy for one day.

Hmmm... :/

Am I a bad person because I find that a little dubious?

Charities, I figure helping people around the world is a great idea. But quite frankly I am sure we all have people in need in our own towns also , maybe it's a little biased, but I think people who make tons of money are better off making the donation to those charities, I for one will help the ones in my street/town/state...

I think that would be a very rough guess. Its not set in stone that a child will die of poverty every three seconds. I'm not saying that children (and adults alike) don't die of poverty, I'm just pointing out that its unlikely and the total number of dead children that goes up every three seconds is probably a way of getting you to donate money.

Yeah, a guilt trip kind of ad...

I'd call it more 'Playing on your consciense' (sp?)

if its not true you can sue them for false advertising. but even if it wasnt every three seconds then at least 2000 people died from poverty while i was listening to the radio.

nope i still feel guilty.

Well, its not really advertising a product as such...you're not buying something from this company so it may not be considered false advertising. I'm not too sure to be honest. I should imagine it would fall under 'persuasive advertaising'

I don't know what I think to this kind of advertising. You sometimes see ads on tv showing stick thin children in the third world and the ads make out that your twenty quid can completly rid their life of misery and I find that a little hard to believe. I also feel slightly uncomfortable watching these adverters as I feel pressured. Of course, this is what the charities are aiming for but not many people feel happy being pressured into giving money when they may not be all that sure that ALL of their money is going to said good cause.

Maybe I'm just cynical :/

i say everyone just give to comic relief,

you know it is all being used for good causes and some of it stays in england and helps the poverty striken over here and special needs kids and other things.

i say you KNOW all your money is going to a good cuase but im not actually sure of that.

when anyone says anything about charities to me i always think of that south park episode where the lady is hoarding all the food.
WeeJ
I can't help thinking that if you want to be charitable then go and help your fellow man. Go help out as the local homeless centre or something.
Sad to say that not many people in the world (including me) are a good enough person to do such a thing. That sucks but its all kinds of true.

I think that for people who can, it is wonderful to help out charities. And like Weej suggested, volunteering at local centers, etc. is also a great way to help.

I saw a very interesting segment on charaties a couple of days ago.

It was about how easy it is to make a charity. And according to laws in the States, only 1 percent of proceeds have to go to whoever or whatever the charity is for. So basicaly you can make a charity, and make tons of money off people who want to help other out. Horrible really, but you can count on some one to abuse the system.
porcelainwarrior
that is just plain skanky ... why would people do that?

it just goes to show you cant have faith in people i guess ...

They focused mainly on this one guy I can remember. But he made a charity that sounded alot like the make a wish foundation, gave only 3 percent to helping a few kids and kept the rest. Of course legally they couldnt do anything. And it was found out he was running like 3 other charitys. I think thats close to being the lowest of low. Using peoples sympathy towards people to get mansions. Earn the money your selve is what I believe.
