The Smiths, as far as syuu is concerned, are God.

So this is where you will be discussing their wonderfulness, or if you hate them, what in hell is wrong with you and where your parents went wrong. =)
Debaser
excuse me? hate them? is that...is that POSSIBLE? jesus f--king christ...

sorry. i REALLY f--king like the smiths...
syuu
It is! Fuzzy took them AND ABBA down in one insult last night.

But he made up for it with the new Godlu quote:

Boobs > Not boobs

XDDD
cheese is funny
who?
elf

goin' with mah bro on this one.
syuu
Silly kids! Go download something from them. I mean, really, any p2p program will have some.
cheese is funny
but what is it? is it seriously worth me being adventours for?
syuu
Yessss. They're better than the Aquabats, that's for damn sure.

=P

Don't hurt me, Dayan made me do it!
cheese is funny
dayan is seriously asking for an ass whooping... look at my sig! look what he did to it!

....

now to be on topic... genre of the smiths? just wondering...
syuu
I'm not really sure what I'd call them. They do stock a lot of morbid love songs that I find terribly romantic.

ie: There Is A Light That Never Goes Out

Bigmouth Strikes Again is pretty awesome too. Just don't fall into Dayan's the beginning of The Queen is Dead loop. *shudder* How depressing ..
cheese is funny
i will look into them in a little bit... dont have the time now... but... morbid love songs? sounds like emo to me laugh.gif , but i will give you the benifit of the doubt and look into them....

Am I crazy that I've never got into them? I prefer Placebos cover of this, so deliciously ott...
Industrial Kybosh
In all honesty, I never liked the Smiths until recently. Now, however, I hail certain of their tunes as pure musical genius. The aforementioned 'There Is A Light...' is probably my favourite, but others such as 'Panic' and 'Sheila Take A Bow' rank highly, too.

Alanity - I've got that Placebo cover somewhere. It's not half bad, I must admit...
Mingtea
How soon is now.

great song.
DocBrown1985
Umm.. I voted without knowing exactly what i was voting for. I thought you guys were talking about the matrix with all of the Agent smith clones. Umm that explains one hatem vote that really should be in the I have no idea who the smiths are catagory. I am quite embarrased at my lack of music knowledge.
Im a nerd. I can change. If i have to. I guess.
Alanity
Any self respecting nerd should have knowledge of who the smiths are... blink.gif

I only bought ''The Very Best Of The Smiths'' recently. It's odd. Unbearably depressing, yet i'm drawn to it. blink.gif
Sir Maxerpopple
Err, is this an england thing?

Who are the Smiths?

Pardon the ignorance.

I was thinking of starting an appreciation for Morrissey and The Smiths thread and this one, though it was dead, has been brought back to life again! WOOHOO!!!

I urge everyone to check them out. I did have their Queen is Dead album (their best one, in my opinion - considering I've heard them all smile.gif ) but I;ve lost it! I was LOSING my mind over it. I bet I left it in my brother;s house in California, where it won't be appreciated...

The Smiths are from Manchester I think. They were typically during the 80s and were huge here, in England. If you like bands like The Cure, Depeche Mode and whatnot, then you'll love The Smiths

I remember when I first got into them, my brother and I were coming back from somewhere and we managed to listen to all of their albums bar Meat is Murder, all in one go (it was great) and then we started to listen to some of Morrissey's solo stuff, namely Viva Hate. And if you know that album you would know that Alsation Cousin is the first track on it. And OMG what a HUGE difference. Its so much more...intense and filled with anger than the Smith;s stuff. I was surprised. Did/does anyone else feel like that? Apparantly, according to my brother, Morrissey and a crush on Marr (a guitar god) for sometime. After he told him, the band couldn't work together and split up...quite sad really, they were amazing together...

Oh well whatever nevermind. There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out (damn long title) is probably one of my favourite songs by them. Listening to The Smiths got me into reading Oscar Wilde, one of my favourite poets, so I'll always love them for that too!

Amen to that. Enough said =P

Oh yeah, and Katii, you're not the only one that doesn't get depressed listening to them. I heard a couple of their songs a couple months ago, and it didn't make me sad at all o.O

I don't!

Some people think I'm strange for that, but no I don't. Besides they have some funny songs too, Frankly Mr Shankly is pure class smile.gif *tries to rhyme Mr Gallagher with something*

I heard both. The Tatu version sucks. Sorry deaq, but the Smiths version is definitive, as well as bein the original.

I hate poor cover versions of classics. mad.gif

I love the Smiths though. All top stuff. I think Morrissey went off the boil a bit once they split up though.
Dak
Smiths are grand and Placebo's cover of Bigmouth strikes again is damned good too.
Sarah the Spider
Heard The Smiths for the first time the other day. Very good. biggrin.gif
sammi
Yeppers, me too. Me wub.gif 'em. This thread sort of reminded me I actually have the mp3s, which is very good... *runs off to listen* happy.gif
Stone Pony
The Smiths eh, depressing lyrics but with the fantastic guitar of Johnny Marr to make the songs sound cheerfull.

A strange combination that works for me. One of my all time favourite short songs is 'Please,Please,Please Let Me Get What I Want' 2 minutes of sheer beauty.

Genre wise, The Smiths used to be under "indie" (independant, you know), as they weren't "mainstream", they are along the lines of Echo And The Bunnymen and other eighties greats! Morrisey, the lead singer is well known for his dour lyrical genius and having gladiolli hanging out of his back pocket as he danced around the stage! Oh, yeah, and they're great!!

*mutter, mutter "Yes, I remember The Smiths - I really am that old!"* dry.gif

Just an update-
The Smiths = still God
Daria
Yes, yes they are.
I still like The Cure more, though >_>
syuu
the Cure is good, but i am more hopelessly biased than anyone. to me, the Smiths represent the greatest band in all of history. of course that's inaccurate, judging by sales, popularity, et-cetera, but hey.

..i'm still very, very scared by the amount of people that've never heard of them.
Mata
Pah. Future Sound Of London are still the best band in history, and I am also happy to disregard sales and other statistics in support of this claim.
syuu
disagreed.
although I've never heard them, I will download them.
and like all other bands, they will not be the smiths.
Mata
FSOL is very cool electronica, so absolutely nothing like The Smiths.

I have discovered recently that 'Charming Man' is almost impossible to sing along with on SingStar. The pace of the delivery is completely ridiculous:

Unless you know the song precisely already you don't stand a chance!
Daria
More of a reason to know the songs inside out, then! You know, just incase someone suddenly challenges you to a duel of Smiths' songs.
It's happened.
I'm lucky to be still standing.

Ooo, i actually really like electronica. will definitely give them a listen soon, then.

Death by The Smiths?

Somehow, that really makes sense.
Izzy
FSOL? Eww. I'm not into their stuff whatsoever They have a cool website though.

The best band is most definitely either G3 or something including Slash.
*Guitars totally make a band a gazillion times better*

Never actually heard of The Smiths before this, but will google now.
Mata
The FSOL website for the Dead Cities album was what first inspired me to get into web-design. After much nagging by me, it was put back online! Yay! http://raft.vmg.co.uk/fsol/

Their last two albums, released as 'FSOL presents Amorphous Androgynous' were hippy nonsense and really patchy. A few good tracks and a lot of average psychedelia around them, but Lifeforms, ISDN, and especially Dead Cities are brilliant. They have been my constant source of inspiration for ten years - my degree dissertation was written to their accompaniment, about 80% of my PhD thesis was written with one of those albums playing, and now they always go on when I want to get into the mood to write my novel. I've tried other things, but they never quite work as well!

Guitars are okay, but... Well, they always sound like guitars. There's variety of course, but it's variety inside a spectrum. I like lots of guitar-based bands for their music, lyrics, or passion: their choice of instruments don't really influence me!

(Except the Hammond Organ, which cannot possibly ever produce bad music. Even bad tunes on a Hammond sound incredible.)

..that was amazingly clever. gave me a pretty good laugh, too. tongue.gif
i haven't gotten around to giving FSOL a listen yet, but hearing that it's good background music to inspiration really turns me into them. the smiths usually does that for me - i can't quite understand it. the whole obsession all started when InKy dedicated 'There is a Light...' to me, as cheesy and embarrassing as that sounds. i downloaded that, thought it was alright, wasn't much into some of their other stuff after that, and then BAM! Bigmouth Strikes Again popped onto my CD player, and i was..hopelessly hooked. for the last couple of years, Rubber Ring's been my favorite, but the only two I can listen to while writing or reading are oscillate wildly and money changes everything. if you're familiar (see: obsessed) with the Smiths, you'll know it's because those are two of their instrumentals. that, or I've never heard a version with words.
