I was looking through statistics, and it is incredible how many new people have posted once or never and then just left. With 70 posts I'm on the third or fourth page of 15 (list of members in descending post order). Does this bother anyone as much it does I? Or is it a forum social darwinism, leaving only the strong to debate (at least in Issues forum, my exclusive)?

well, there is no darwinism or anything going on here, in my opinion. people join and leave, simple as that. they either forget to comeback, or arent happy with how their first 5 minutes go, or are offended by something. or something along those lines.

I suppose the question is.. Is this a good riddance to non-committal people or a lack of new people staying to express new ideas?

Or get fed up with people who keep talking and don't ever know what they're talking about.

what is the issue really? some people stay, some people leave. implying that there is darwinism going on here is saying that somehow the people here are here because we are somehow greater then the people that arent.

yeah, honestly. consider this: on my forum, which has been around longer than matazone, if you have 70 posts, you're in the top 40. about 60% of our members never post. oh well. i don't really get what you mean though.

It has less to do with the forum and more to do with the people. They join and think maybe their personality wouldn't fit into this environment, they don't like the general forums offered...same reason some people stay in Girl Scouts and some kids just quit.
*sews Mittens patch onto vest*
Sorry that this post was pointless...but, quite frankly, this whole thread seems that way...?

That was blatantly uncalled for.
Anyway, I've been on a whole bunch of forums where I've signed up, posted once or twice and then went away. It all depends on whether you like the place or not. I don't really think that social Darwinism applies...

I am a new to this forum and forums in general (my sis made me join). What I have been doing the past week (the lengh of time I have been a member) is reading other peoples opinions more than I have been posting my own. The reason for this is not because I do not have my own opinions, but so I can get a feel of the tone of the place and it`s regulars.
I think that is better than joining and being over opinionated and trying to take over the place with post after post.

It is interesting how many people join but then hardly ever post.
I think the question of this thread is 'why do you think that happens?'
I think it's mainly due to the amount of different forums people are involved with. Generally you're either a forum person or you're not. This place has a lot of very active members and as such the topics tend to have quite a high turnover. If you want to keep track of a coversation you'll generally need to be able to visit regularly.
It might also be because there are so many people on here, a lot of whom know eachother, it might seem quite intimidating to someone who wants to get involved.
I'm not worried by the statistic. I could do a cull of users if I wanted to but currently I don't really see the need. I'd like for a person who joined six months ago but only posted once to be able to come back now and still be able to log into their account. Perhaps there are people in there who joined, liked the place but never really had the time to get involved. If their account was deleted before they had the cahnce to find that time they would probably not bother returning.

I'll bet lots of the people think it'll be fun at first, then either just leave, or forget about it. Soon after joining this forum I went out and joined another forum, my intro thread was only replied to twice, after the bunches of messages I got when I came in here I wasn't really impressed. I also felt uncomfortable going to that other forum at school, and you'd understand why if you've been there (
Necrotic Obsession. I think one of the main reasons I joined was cause I'd seen that that's where the acid bunnies came from, and wanted to see what else there was. Eventually the site got blocked at my school and I quit going there completely. Also I joined Elf's forum (link in sig). It's not nearly as active as this one is, and sometimes I feel kindof like an outcast, cause most of the active members actually know each other. But I still go there on occasion, and try to post when I can.
Wow I typed alot for that. Well that's my bit, later.

many people join forums and never post on it
hell i've done it in the past with the VG cats forum because well it sounded like a good idea but it really wasnt.
also some people get intimidated by the threads with 256 pages and then run for the hills as they are never going to read it
or maybe just maybe 1 in every ten people that sign on to the matazone forums get eaten by mata in an attempt to gain ultimate knowledge by absorbing there brains.
its all part of his evil scheme its why mittens was created in the first place
