OKay, well obviously most people will believe that cutting oneself is a hinderence to yourself, your body, and people who know you. But I was just wondering if anyone had any opinions on it, be they first hand or second hand or just hear say --- what do you guys think? huh.gif

Many societies and religions use/used blood as a means of sealing pacts and bonding with something/someone.

However I doubt that is the case with most people today. The concept of bloodletting, beyond a ritualistic purpose has no more use, as advanced medicines have better ways of healing patients.

Yet the great counter-culture alternative movement started in the late 50's and blooming in the 60's to the modern day has produced a number of new and quite strange revolutions and rituals in young (and in some occasions not-so-young) people.

One of the newest seems to be that of bloodletting, among other rituals as wearing a heavy amount of makeup to acheive black lips and a white face as well as duct tape clothing. I have known people to drink each others blood in order to become more intimate with each other. This has deep roots in the past and does not surprise me it has resurfaced in culture once again.

Others do it to feel pain, and they associate pain with a sort of "beyond pleasure" experiance. This also is a common practice in many cultures.

Therefore, this practice does not strike me as particularly odd, however often times the reason for doing so does.

Some people do it to feel different, or to release pain, and I must question...Why? There are other, less painful ways to release pain from the body, like a massage. Some people do it because it is an alternative thing to do, and in the quest of "self expression", they do something against the norm.

I personally find that reason to be absurd, call me a cultural conservative, but I do not beelive many people truly wish to express themselves or rather just do something that pushes the envelope. Those who do perform the act to express themselves, I am astonished at it, and slightly sickened. I am sure this is the kind of reaction they intend to place upon me.

From a purely sociological standpoint, this is just another nuance of a movement with a variety of goals, the counter-culture reaction to the repressive early-mid century (the 20's through the 50's).

Yet from an outside observer's standpoitn, I see it as either a cry for help, a cry for attention, a cry for recognition, a cry for respect, or a cry for self-expression. These are all human needs and should be rewarded to all people.

However I will not give you respect or attention if you slit your wrists with the message "look at me!". I find that disturbing and will dismiss it as too far outside my tastes.

All one needs to get my respect or attention is to have a want to know, for those who are carelessly ignorant are in my opinion the greatest form of man, just not people I want to talk to.
