I'm trying to compile a playlist of cheery, light, summery tunes to lift my mood in anticipation of pleasant weather. Why not pitch in a few suggestions, why not? Hmm?
Current ideas include:
The Wannadies - pretty much anything, though 'Hit' is a fave of mine
The Wildhearts - 'I Wanna Go Where The People Go'
Preston School Of Industry - 'The Furnace Sun'
Aphex Twin - 'Donkey Rhubarb'
Super Furry Animals - many to choose from... 'Northern Lites' maybe
Got a lot of others buzzin' round the ol' noggin, but I want to see what you peeps think...

Actually, most everything off of Abbey Road is pretty fit for happy summer-time antics. And Golden Slumbers is *so* mellowing.
I wish I could add more, but my music collection is not really happy bouncy summertime oriented. (Except for, say, Blue Oyster Cult - This Ain't the Summer of Love. Hey, it is about summer.

) Oh, and some early Beatles, too.

Reel big fish - take on me
Rancid - Brad Logan
....also Red Hot Chili Peppers- Under the bridge

I want to throw in a bunch of Neil Young, but it's actually all depressing, for some reason it makes me all happy.
Can- Halleluwah
Can- Vitamin C
Can- Paper House
...
All the rocking songs on Exile On Main Street by The Rolling Stones... Namely Rip This Joint =D
What about...
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion- Get Down Lover
Pixiegoth
Apr 5 2004, 10:21 AM
The Primitives - Crash
The Las - There She Goes
Anything by ZZ Top is usually fun. Fun to laugh
at too!

I love that Reel Big Fish version of Take On Me

I wouldn't choose that Wildhearts song though. What about TV Tan?

I always think the Thrills are pretty summery, also I know people have mentioned some Beatles stuff, what about 'Good day sunshine' ?? Oh and 'What a beautiful day' by the Levellers ... and while I'm at it 'Wake up Boo' by the Boo Radleys.
Mr Fuzzy
Apr 5 2004, 07:32 PM
Ooh! I forgot about Wake Up Boo. Top cheery tunage there.
Don't Walk Away Eileen - Sam Roberts it was only recorded a few years ago but sounds like it was done in the early 60's. V. cheery

THE BEACH BOYS!

Classic summer tunes! Anything by the Beach Boys or Jan and Dean. Surf City, Surfin' Safari, I Get Around, Surfer Girl, um... Groovin' by the Rascals, Montego Bay by Amazulu...stuff from the first Sun Jammin' album. All happy songs.
I bet Tigersong's embarrassed to be engaged to me now.

Silly monkeys. Not wise in the ways of Supergrass?
Have a look
here. I can't be bothered to make a nice HTML wrapper, so have a raw directory. As a random bonus I'm popping a Carter track in there too. Once it finishes utilising teh uplaod coedz that is...
Edit: I found where I'd left Wake Up Boo too.

Woo! Good work, summer buddies!
Fuzzy, you are full-on right about Supergrass. They have a place on any cheeky, chirpy compy.
Pixie - 'I Wanna Go...' is a grin-like-a-buffoon tune for me, but TV Tan is solid gold too. Feh - plenty to choose from.
To those in the knows - Freezepop > you. I plan to obtain 'Science Genius Girl'.
Keep 'em coming - the weather is getting more pleasant by the day round here. Except this week, which has sucked mightily.

Got a half-finished summer comp, but more work is needed. Bend your eyes/ears round this:
'Caught By The Fuzz' - Supergrass (early Fierce Panda version)
'Wash In The Rain' - The Bees
'California Soul' - Marlena Shaw (from that KFC ad with the couch and the salad)
'Soldier Girl' - Polyphonic Spree
'Subcutaneous Phat' - Desert Sessions
'Hotel Yorba' - The White Stripes
'No. 1' - Bluetones (early version of 'Bluetonic', dontchaknow...)
'Mr. E's Beautiful Blues' - Eels
'Clara Bow' - 50 Foot Wave
'Güero Canelo' - Calexico
'Touch Sensitive' - The Fall (remember the ad with the cars playing hide and seek? That tune - "HEY HEY HEY HEY!!!")
It's work in progress, but it's bloody great, I tells you. I'll have it ready for the meet, so be prepared...

Decided against Freezepop? I don't know how well it'd go with the rest of your CD, but The Cure's Just Like Heaven is pretty damn happy.

Halcyon and on and on - Orbital. No feel-good compilation is complete without Orbital on it. I'm a big fan of Belfast by Orbital too.
Anything from the Earth Vs. album by The Wildhearts is great, but I'm not sure if I'd call it feel-good, but from that album I'd pick 'Miles Away Girl' and 'My Baby is a Headf***' (which is actually really sweet at the end when he realises it's not the girl's fault, she's great, it's just that he's an idiot and doesn't see it sometimes).
The Velvet Ant by Clouddead is great, chilled hip-hop.
Dreamtime by Minx, old intelligent drum'n'bass. Absolutely blissful, 'might be tricky to find these days.
Pretty much anything off of Ben Harper's first three albums, 'The Three of Us' is especially beautiful though.
That'll do for the moment or I'll be here all day.

Hell yeah.
I've got me a hankerin' for ska/punk covers at the moment, because they're wonderful fun. As a result, I also recommend:
Rancid - La Bamba
No Doubt - Come On Eileen
For ultimate Summer cheeriness, I also suggest Third Eye Blind's 'Semi-Charmed Life'.
Faith No More - Be Aggressive (really silly and fun)
Incubus - Anti-Gravity Love Song
Will probably think of a million others...

Heh heh heh... This summer, the laborious task of making this damn compilation will be over. I've even gone as far as contemplating a double album, taking in a wide range of musical styles. It's gonna be fun. Details will follow eventually...

Any further suggestions will be appreciated, even if I don't end up using them. Heck, you could even make a summer compilation yourself, to cheer you up when it rains for three months like ever other chuffing summer...

Nothings more happy and summery than Smashmouth.
REM's 'Reveal' album is pretty summery, as well.
Feeder - Buck Rogers
Eels - Mr E's Beautiful Blues
Boy Hits Car - Man Without Skin (maybe, its possible that I've just become obsessed with this song at the moment)
and how could I forget... Dodgy - Good Enough

Summertime Blues is fairly summery. What with all the "summer" in the title.
Reel Big Fish - "She Has A Girlfriend Now" is fairly bright, too.

It's a surprisingly cheerful album all round. We've been sent a promo copy at work, and are being forced to play it every lunchtime until it gets released. Not so bad now, but we'll soon be sick of it. Way to spoil a half-decent album, Head Office monkeys...

Do they hire dormice to use the teapot lids as papchutes? That would be awesome!
Another good song is [Nun of the Above - ode to St George; the art of killing dragons] but it might be a hit hard to find!

I was going to suggest Toploader - Dancing in the Moonlight, but Ryn beat me to it
There was an afro-carribean girl who had a few very summery singles a few years ago - Rhianna, but I don't seem to be able to find her anywhere. If you can find her, the song Oh, Baby is really bright and summery (and I swear to God not as pornographic as it sounds
).

While some are more summery than others, l don't know if AFI have ever done a song that could properly be considered a happy clappy tune.

Minus The Bear - Pachuca Sunrise and The Appleseed Cast - Fishing The Sky are both happy, if not clappy, summery tunes.

I was in a cafe eating lunch and they played Sixpence None the Richer - Kiss Me, which made me think of this thread and seeing as how the weather is pretty much crap at the moment summer music is required to make it feel like almost July!
So... this years recommendations?

MASSIVE props to Daria on the suggestions of Go! Team and Jim Noir. Both albums got played to death back when I was still at Music Zone. Pure summer excellence.
I did eventually make that CD, but then I lost it, and I can't bastard remember what was on it. Rage.
If I made it again, I'd definitely put some DJ Format on - probably '3 Feet Deep'. I love a mad funky rhythm.
On another note, I can't believe this thread just got bumped. I was only thinking about it the other day...
