My brother and I have been playing The Suffering for PS2 for about a week and a half now, and although I was hesitant at first, I <3 it now. We've beaten it with two of the three possible endings, so we just have one more to go. Has anyone else played this game? What do you think? It's pretty disturbing, but after the first dozen or so horrible freaks, I basically got desensitized into not getting too wigged out. laugh.gif I thought the monsters were creative, the storyline was pretty interesting to figure out, and the gameplay graphics were just...wow.

Happy fun evil prison games. Huzzah. smile.gif

Okay, there are a lot better survival horror games out there. The Silent Hill series really comes to mind. That is a game that will mess with your mind...a whole hell of a lot more cerebral than that blasted "The Suffering."" Going for a classic series, I have to mention Resident Evil (yeah... I'm a Capcom fanboy. I know it, and I want the whole world to know it too.) After that, I have to say that Fatal Frame is a lot freakier.

As is, the damn Suffering is more a run and gun with some okay designs and nifty stuff on there. Yeah, it has some quasi freaky moments in it. My biggest problem in "The Suffering" is that incredibly stupid transformation aspect. Just as a personal preference, I have to say that I like my survival horror games bleak, i.e. Silent Hill. I like my person a normal guy. NO POWERS, damnit. None. NONE! That really adds to the scary.

I'm also of the opinion, too, that it should be scary without a lot of explanation (like in Resident Evil. The virus thing is a little over the top. Silent Hill is the way I want it - Why the hell is this happening to me?! Why?! WHY?!)

Anywho, I'm rambling right now. Contact me if you want to discuss more of the orgamsic glory that is Silent Hill.

Personally I've not been that fussed with the Silent Hill games. They start off scary as hell, admittedly, but after a while you get used to it and just run around things, batting them over the head with a bar if they get too close. Not exactly terrifying.

The Resident Evil games are a bit creepier but they also lose their touch after a few hours.

Fatal Frame (AKA Project Zero in the UK)... Now there's a game that scares me. I think what is different about it is that the ghosts are rare enough that there is a lot of anticipation, and varied enough in their movements and attacks that you never quite know how to react to them. That feeling of not knowing what to do all the time (as well as the first-person view when in combat) really make it the only game that still scares me. Although perhaps it's too scary, I've not finished it yet because I keep on turning it off after about half an hour! I think it's great, but by goodness does it give me the willies.

Heh. I loooooove the Silent Hill games. *eye twitch*

Actually, I have an idea for a survival horror game. It takes place in a school (no, there are absolutely no school jokes or anything) and involves an academic team that is stranded at a really old and creepy school. Got the whole plot in my head right now, and I'd rather not write the whole thing out... rather complex. Woo hoo!

Oh yeah. While I'm here, has anyone tried out "Siren" yet? Any thoughts?

And how about "Michigan?" Has anyone heard anything on that lately?
Prince Aries
Siren is pooped out of some lazy game designer's unimaginative booty. To be more on task, Siren is an excellent concept executed poorly. The controls are pure shiitake and the gameplay just as much. It feels entirely like a really BAD stealth game trying to be freaky. I mean it. I personally find this game to be a big stink burger, but some people do find this game enjoyable.

I agree and disagree with Mata about Silent Hill. See...I'm obsessed with it. With the art, with the music, with it all. Anyone who knows anything about me will testify that point. However.....with the release of the 4th installment in Japan and my subsequent import.....blah. That's all I can say. I can't even be bothered to finish it. But this is not the time and place for me to review every game I wish to.

Project Zero/Fatal Frame are where the scares are at. No mistaking that. Playing through Fatal Frame II with my room mate turned out to be one heck of an experience.

The Suffering isn't half bad. If you accept that it's TRUE Survival/Horror/Action, you'll be ok. There's a scene in a prison bathroom where when you open the door you're treated to some f***ed up hallucinations, Jacob's Ladder styleeee. And I'm all over that like Moore on Bush.
Mata
Hey Aries, long time no see!

The Silent Hill games are certainly good pieces of visual design. It's quite rare to see such a cohesive piece of work. Usually some corners are cut in places in games to make them easier to program, but the team behind Silent Hill really have put the work in. Tor me this makes it all the more of a shame that the atmosphere wears off after a while.

I've not got around to Project Zero 2 yet. I think I'll need to pluck up the corage to get through the first one before moving on... But then again, I've got a few other games on the go at the moment when I have the time to play. Currently it's a few hours a week if I'm lucky, which is the least it's been in my whole life I think!
PsychWardMike
I have to say that Silent Hill still has my vote for the best series. They are really the only games that have ever scared me.

(Princess... you forgot to talk aboot Resident Evil.)

As for The Suffering, to be back on topic... I think that, again, it is action first, horror second. For that style of games, I think I'll go for Devil May Cry, or Onimusha. I really find them to be a lot stonger in the terms of gameplay (even though Onimusha has that blasted character relevant controls) and action... the characters are also a lot stronger (by which I mean better, not physically stronger.) *Shrug* I love those games.

That feeling of not knowing what to do all the time

You take a photo of them. Seeming that's what you can do.

And Halo is one scary game. Those things they ripped of from Half-Life. The flood. So many of them, not enough shotgun.

And Half-Life, don't get me started on the scientist.
PsychWardMike
First my opinion... let's get this out of the way. Halo sucks. But let's not open that can of worms.

Halo and Half Life are not scary games. There are some tense moments in the games, sure. There is even some atmosphere that lends itself to be a little creepy. However, the games are not Horror. Any game worth its salt can give you tension and an uneasy feeling. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 had anytime you were under water. Tetris has when the column is rapidly growing. Pacman has its tension when you are cornered by the ghosts. This, however, does not make them horror games.

Hey Mata and all! It's good to be (kind of) back!

The website that hosted them has long since committed hari kari, but there are two art DVD's of Silent Hill that Team Silent released in Japan. There's a number of "art" videos, including a fabulous Aphex-y video starring the ever cute Robbie Bunnie from Silent Hill 3 and 4. Great stuff. I have them, I'll see about maybe posting them up somewhere. Team Silent needs to make a movie. Pure and simple. Team Silent Movie > Jacob's Ladder. PWNED.

And get through Project Zero One and get to two. IMMEDIATELY. I cannot stress that enough. The first one was ok, the second one blew me away. Some of the story sequences are extremely freaky. And there's a radio like thing that makes Silent Hill look like pooh sticks. Yeah, I got that crack from a British mag, sue me guys happy.gif

On the topic of horror, I recently picked up two Japanese films (thankfully subtitled in English, even though they're Region 2, yatta!) called Ju-on: The Grudge both 1 and 2. Amazing films, the both of them. Not out right scary....but more creepiness then you can shake a stick at. Just thought I'd mention.
PsychWardMike
That sounds pretty sweet. I'd love to see a Silent Hill movie. I think that I heard about negotiations for one a while back, but I'm not going to swear to anything.

As for Crimson Butterfly, I have to say that I still am a bigger fan of Silent Hill. I've yet to grow weary of the atmosphere that abounds so very nicely. Mata, you're right... they are works of art.
Prince Aries
Play SH4, your opinion will change, fast. It should be released here in the States soon.

There *IS* a Silent Hill movie apparently in the works. I believe it is being directed by the man who directed Brotherhood of the Wolf. Don't quote me, because I haven't been keeping up on news and such like I should be. I'm a bad bad monkey.
PsychWardMike
Prince, who was that in reference to? (The SH4 comment)
Prince Aries
For anyone who plays Silent Hill. Actually, I really need to not be so hard on it. But it's just how I feel right now. I spent a very large amount of money importing that game and Xenosaga Episode II, only to have both disappoint me, so I guess I'm still a little bitter. I plan on writing reviews for them and maybe posting them in the Creations board. Once I'm not so judgemental, that is.
PsychWardMike
Heh. I remembered this topic when I saw this a while ago. And now I'm actually posting.

The sequel has been announced.

Would it be fair to turn this into the official "survival horror" game thread?
