I wasn't sure whether to post this in Daily Life (as it affects mine) or Issues (as it is a serious issue) so mods feel free to move this post.
Some of you may know that my Mum was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2000. She has been in remission ever since but she rang last night to say that she had it again and need further chemotherapy. She is starting her next course in August.
We don't have a final prognosis as yet. I haven't seen any doctors with her. She lives in Essex and I'm in Sheffield

I am going down to see her this weekend.
Obviously she is upset and scared as both myself and my brother are.
I just thought that those of you who knew me (and may have known about my Mum) might like to know.
I shall let you have any further information as and when I know myself.

Sam, don't ever lose hope. I have faith that your mum will get through this, and all of you should have too. If you give in to something like cancer and accept it, it will consume a person. I know this from experience with my grandfather. I watched it happen. If I go through that again with anyone else, I would do so much more to encourage them to stay strong and fight it.
*joins in the hug pile* Mmm nothin' like nice warm squishy bodies. Gawd I miss that IRL

It's not the greatest news really, but at least there's things that can be done and it was found before it would have gotten worse. The chemo is never fun, it's a horrible thing for somebody close to you to go through.
Much love to you and your mum.

I went down to see her and she was putting on a brave face. I could tell she was scared though. You just know these things with my Mum

She cried on Sunday morning after searching the net and finding out she only have a 23% chance of survival. I cried too. Not because of that but because she was having to go through this with stupid statistics on the net. She was only looking because a friend of hers (who I thought was a complete and utter dick before all this) told her not to accept what the NHS said and try alternative therapies. He was saying he had been told he needed a pacemaker and defied conventional medicine to do something else, blah, blah, BLAAAH!

Since WHEN has having a pacemaker ANYTHING LIKE CANCER!!!!! The man is a nob. I told Mum this and told her that looking for alternative therapies is all well and good but she really shouldn't listen to this idiot who has no experience of cancer and, more importantly, no medical training!!

She is having a scan on 19th July but they don't think they will see anything. She is also seeing a specialist and she has a list of questions. I said something she could do was to find a board like this made for fellow sufferers of ovarian cancer and ask them what they thought (if there was one). People who've actually been through it and come through or have more ideas. She might not like what she hears but then ignorance is NOT bliss in this situation. I'd rather know the facts however unpleasant than not know.
She needs to speak to the specialist/doctor and she said will soon. I'll let you know more when I know more.
I took Ed with me and he was bloody fantastic. Just mind blowingly supportive and wonderful.
Thank you to all of you for your support
geez .. I am very wary when it comes to people recommending altrnative therapies for something as profoundly physical as cancer ... Alternative opinions, fine ... but I still think you are in the realms of _relatively_ standard medicine on that front ... I like the 'forums for people in the same position deal' ... you said it just right ... *crosses fingers* ...

That's awful news, I don't know you too well but all the same I hope everything works out ok.
I'd rather know all the facts as well, at least you know what you're up against then. My mother was diagnosed with a brain tumor two years ago and the NHS wasn't a very big help for her, the doctor pretty much ruined her life (but I won't go into detail) so after she had an unsuccesful operation she sought out alternative medical views and then she discovered that there were a few options she could take which lead to her having a specialised form of radiotherapy in Shefield, we don't know how successful it's been yet though. I'm just trying to say that some alternative options can be helpful but they have to be well researched. Anyway, I wish you and you mother all the best for the future.

Where abouts in Sheffield? I live here. Wonder if there is anything up here that can help Mum?

She is still looking at alternative therapies. My point was that before looking into other options you need to know what EXACTLY is wrong and what to do from there. Clive (this twatty friend) is just sticking his oar in. I'm biased as I don't like that guy. He is very very rude and annoying. But he's made my Mum upset and that upsets me

Umm, I can't remember the name of it off the top of my head, but I'm going home tomorrow so I'll ask my mother. I think it might have been a place that specialised in radiotherapy, but I'll ask her to make sure and then shall let you know

Babes, expect you've got my Pm and stuff but wanted to add, please tell your Mum not to read stuff that she'll find on the internet - I did that myself and it just frightens the hell outta you!
What's more, not all of the stuff that you find is posted by people with medical background so it's not always completely factual. Your Mum, as you know, is an individual and she needs to speak to her consultant and try to avoid random info from the net.

im sorry about your mom.. just try to think positive, and things will turn out good.. thats what i try to go at least.. it might not, work, but it might make you feel better..
and i agree, dont listen to stuff you read on the internet.. cause its not always right, and it can be VERY scary and one sided.. a few weeks back i was going through a medical thing, and i read stuff on it, and it literally kept me up for like.. 3 days.. so yeah.. just my two cents.

It's okay to blow a rude person's opinions off. Anyone who can't even find it in themselves to be mannerly on a daily basis has no right tell you what to do, let alone in a situation as serious as this.
I've done it before, but it can't be easy for you

so more *hugs*

True

Mum knows how I feel about him. She knows I think he's a moron. It's her choice though. I will mention that the internet is a scarey place and should be avoided for medical diagnosis at all costs whatever Clive says

Right, I've been home and asked my mam which hospital it was. It's the Royal Hallamshire hospital (think I spelt that right?). Anyway, I just searched it on google and on the first result there's a little bit of info on that hospital and also links to others, one of them being Weston Park hospital which is also in Sheffield and it says that it's one of the three purpose built specialist cancer hospitals in the UK so that could be an option for your mum, sorry it's not a shed load of information, but I hope that helps you a little
Good luck doesn't seem the best words for this situation, but I hope everything goes ok for you and your mum

Hey,
First of all i wanna give you a massive hug.
My mum was diagnosed with Leukeamia back in 1995. I was only little at the time. But my mum was really strong person and she lived a lot longer than she should of. I promise you, this is just a small set back or bump in the road. Things WILL get better. Just don't give up. Wear a smile. I'm sure you mum will be in the 23% that do survive.

Just a quick update...
Mum had a scan yesterday and she is getting the results tomorrow.
I was under the impression that the scan wouldn't show anything but someone has told her that if they see anything large (like a tumour) they will start chemo straight away.
This shocked me a bit as the last I heard was that chemo would be in August.
Mum is keeping her fingers crossed (as am I) that there won't be anything hugely visible so she can see her brother for his 60th in Chicago.
I'll let you all know what the results of the tests are on Thursday.

*reluctantly climbs out from underneath warm pile of bodies*

My Mum rang earlier with the results of her test. THEY CAN'T SEE ANYTHING!!!!!!!

This means, from what I can gather, although the cancer is more than likely back there is no huge tumour at the present time and therefore much easier to treat.
It's by no means the best news in the world but it's certainly good news considering what we were potentially facing.
She can go to America next week and she is starting her chemo in August. In addition, they are only giving her one type of drug which isn't the one that makes her lose her hair or feel sick

Annoyingly she has already cut all her hair off in anticipation but if that's the least of her worries then I'm fine with that.
I just can't stop grinning!

We aren't out of the woods yet but with any luck she'll live much longer than originally thought.
Thanks to you ALL, there are too many to name, for being there, for helping me, for your kind thoughts and prayers. They are very much appreciated and I shall be showing my Mum this thread when I am down south next just to show her how much everyone is rooting for her

*climbs back into pile of warm bodies*
