Hey guys- im reading this book called Geeks: How 2 Lost Boys Rode The Internet Out of Idaho. its definitly not the most amazing book i have ever read, but every second i am reading it i think of the forums. its about these 2 19 year old guys who are self proclaimed "geeks." its a true story but as far as i am in the book so far, basically what happens is that they get out of idaho, and they are invited into the normal social world, but whenever they go to parties or anything, they feel unconfortable and end up leaving! then they go home and IM people in ICQ, and etc. i dunno, i just feel like they should keep their online life, but if they are invited to parties, they should go and try to meet new people. ok ////endrant! ok sorry about that.
so has anyone else read this book? does it remind you of the forums too? do you think its weird that there is a book about people who are obsessed with the internet? etc.

I'm glad to hear that you enjoy a good book. I have a suggestion. I just finished a book called
Cyber Citizen by C. Shiles. It's a short story that takes a hard look at the downside of out technologically driven society(fiction) however, "Cyber Citizen" is the best short fiction story for readers who enjoy being pulled into a mental spell. It leads your mind into pictures of scenes that make the reader's feel like a part of the story. The character becomes familiar to anyone they may know, or perhaps themselves. It's the next best thing to going to the movies. The character takes matters into her own hands, becoming a vigilante determined to put an end to this scourge. What happens to her along the way makes for a suspenseful tale that dives deeply into the sordid world of online predators, while simultaneously blurring the line between who is the hunter and who is the hunted. I just know all who read it will love it. I got it on
amazon.com Enjoy !

It amuses me that a book about people "obsessed" with the internets reminds you of people on the forums. I can't speak for everyone, especially as I think I am vaguely different from most of the guys on here, due to being an extro not and introvert. But most people on these forums who have meant a lot to me, or with whom I have become close, I am now friends with in "real life". As in, Froggie and I go for bike-rides together (I know Froggie through Mr Teapot and we met last summer), Wytukaze and I are in a relationship (as are Cand and Moop- hell, they're even married), Snoo and I met up to go to a gig when we both lived in the same area and go shopping and hang out whenever we can, I met both Novander and Wytukaze through Snoo having a pub-crawl birthday thing, and Witless was one of the people who came and met me from the train station when I returned home from Paris. What I'm trying to say is that for me, this forum is a way of meeting new people and keeping in touch with those I have become friends with. We are probably all self-confessed geeks, but it is just one of the things that we have in common. The guys in the book- presumably they are friends with each other?

I realise that because us British forumites all live so much closer to each other than you Americans, then it is easier for us to meet up and socialise on a regular basis. But I think the principle is the same. *shrugs*

Then again, Wytu and I (and Cand, Moop and Snoo) sometimes sit next to each other and chat through IRC/ MSN instead of actually talking...

EDIT- OH NOES! Necroposting! >_<
